Liam Gallagher is suing his brother, and former Oasis bandmate, Noel over comments the guitarist made at a press conference in July, according to Reuters. In a statement, Liam announced, that he has “taken legal action against Noel Gallagher for statements he made during the Electric Cinema press conference on July 6 during which he claimed Oasis pulled out of the 2009 V Festival Chelmsford gig because I had a hangover. That is a lie and I want Oasis fans, and others who were at V, to know the truth.” The singer claims that he couldn’t perform the show because he had laryngitis.

Linda Perry on Katy Perry: 'She's microwave popcorn'

Linda-Perry

Hey Linda Perry—what’s going on?

The former 1 Non-Blonde turned pop hitmaker (Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful,” Pink’s “Get the Party Started”) had some unkind words for Katy Perry (no relation; if they were, how awkward would that family reunion picnic be?).

“Who wants a f—ing Katy Perry record? I’m sorry. You’re gonna get the two songs that are probably the hits that are good, but the rest of the album is gonna be crap. It is, it’s gonna sound like s—,” Linda told journalist Heath Daniels earlier this week.

And then, of course, she backtracked… sort of. Watch the video here, and find out why she’s also not exactly nuts about Adele: READ FULL STORY »

Pukkelpop officially canceled after stage collapse, death toll at five

Organizers of Belgium’s Pukkelpop announced today that the remainder of this year’s three-day festival will be canceled after Thursday’s stage collapse. “Pukkelpop is in deep mourning. We feel much sympathy to the families and friends of the victims. Words cannot describe…,” a translated post on the festival’s site reads.

The death toll in the incident is now five, with about 140 people injured, officials said at a press conference earlier today, the AP reports. Many were hit by debris as a violent thunderstorm not only brought down tents, scaffolding, and stage lights, but also uprooted trees. Three patients remain in critical condition, a doctor told reporters.

Some of the bands scheduled to perform at the festival have tweeted their condolences. “Feeling so helpless at Pukkelpop. We’re so saddened by the news of 5 fatalities & countless injured. Our thoughts are with you all. J K,” wrote the Ting Tings. ”Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the tragic events at Pukkelpop. For information +32 (0) 11 23 97 11,” the Foo Fighters offered. “Our hearts go out to all who lost their lives or were injured in today’s storm at Pukkelpop. This is not how it should be. Oof,” said Fleet Foxes. “Our deepest thoughts and sympathies to the families and friends of those who lost their lives today at the show in Belgium. We are absolutely devastated that this celebration ended in tragedy,” wrote Thirty Seconds to Mars’ Jared Leto. “To those that were injured we are sending thoughts and prayers. Obviously under these horrible and dangerous circumstances, and out of respect for those who have passed, Thirty Seconds to Mars will not be playing. We love you all and hope tomorrow brings a better day.”

Will Smith making a new album? A producer says yes

Will-Smith

Though he began his career as an international superstar in the hip-hop world, Will Smith hasn’t released any new music since 2005′s Lost and Found (and considering it’s difficult to remember exactly what was on that album, it feels like it has been even longer).

Admittedly, he’s been pretty busy starring in gigantic blockbusters and shepherding the careers of his offspring, but it appears as though the Fresh Prince might be making a return to the microphone. READ FULL STORY »

Lady Gaga to open MTV VMAs: How will she top herself this time?

Lady Gaga announced tonight that she will be opening the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards at Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre August 28.

Or rather her Little Monsters did. Appearing at MTV’s Times Square studio for the broadcast premiere of her “Yoü and I” video, a legion of sequined fans on the street below unfurled a banner with the over-punctuated missive “Gaga to Open VMAs!!”

Admittedly, this comes as a bit of an anti-climax. The news came after days of Stewart/Colbert-worthy pre-announcement announcements, including a series of VMAs promos prominently featuring a (literally) stripped-down Gaga, and the “Yoü and I” video itself, which was supposed to debut tonight but leaked Tuesday. And really, who’s more obvious a choice to open a gaudy MTV spectacle than the Queen of Dramatic Entrances herself?

Still, that last point yet again begs the question that may come to define her young career: how can she keep topping herself? Her star-making 2009 VMAs performance featured an unforgettably dead-eyed Ladyship crucified on a meat-hook after a bloody version of “Paparazzi.” Then last year she maintained the butcher-shop motif with her infamous “meat dress,” setting off a chain-reaction of food-related couture culminating in her Grammys entrance via giant egg.

Music Mixers, how do you think she’ll kick off the show? With Tony Bennett predicting this week that Gaga will be “as big as Elvis,” might a duet be in order? Could her male alter ego “Joe Calderone” make an appearance? Does anyone else hope that her post-video-premiere revelation that Creature from the Black Lagoon is her favorite horror movie could be a clue? (Okay, that’s just me.) And if you’re going to hype an announcement to this degree, shouldn’t it at least end up being of this magnitude?

Lady Gaga and Cher duet 'The Greatest Thing' coming in September: Sample Gaga's demo here!

The release of a much-anticipated collaboration between Lady Gaga and Cher—a song titled “The Greatest Thing,” written by Gaga and producer RedOne—is just around the corner: Yesterday, in response to a follower’s query about when the song would be out, Cher tweeted simply, “SEPTEMBER.” Here’s an appropriate response: Praise divas!

“The Greatest Thing” is set to be the lead single from Cher’s 26th studio album, which has been in the works for quite some time now. Last year, the superstar told EW that she was working with Diane Warren, the legendary songwriter behind Celine Dion’s “Because You Loved Me” and two tunes from Burlesque, including Cher’s power ballad “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me.”

“It really won’t be ‘Believe’-ish,” she said of the album at that early stage. “It will be more…I don’t know how to say it. I can’t put a genre to it. It’s a little bit more real instruments, like guitars and stuff like that.” As recently as June, Cher tweeted that her new, still untitled album will be “WAY DANCE.” (Could that be the title? Ha.)

No official release date has been set for the album or the single yet, but you can sleep soundly knowing that a sure-to-be-delicious diva collaboration—and a diva comeback!—is coming soon. Consider it your gift for being so good this summer.

Curious about “The Greatest Thing” and what it might sound like? You’re in luck, since a demo version of the song, sung in full by only Gaga, is on the nets. It sounds sort of “Believe”-ish, if you ask me. Enjoy it here:

Yet another stage collapse plagues the summer of 2011: A structure in Belgium collapsed today at the Pukkelpop Music Festival in Hasselt (pictured at left), and authorities have already confirmed at least four deaths.

Foo Fighters and 30 Seconds to Mars were among the headliners; Chicago indie rockers the Smith Westerns were set to perform next and lost all of their equipment, though they were not physically injured.

UPDATE: Footage from the collapse has surfaced online. Watch it here: READ FULL STORY »

Bon Iver releases 'Holocene' video, lets disillusioned little boy be great: Watch here

Bon Iver’s latest is less a traditional music video than soundtracked footage of a little boy’s brilliant day. Either way, it’s simple and gorgeous.

In the Nabil-directed clip for “Holocene” a cave boy, alone in the middle of nowhere, skips rocks, drinks river water, and rolls down a grass hill. Ah, fun times, right? But throughout the clip, when he’s not goofing off, he lumbers around with a look of defeat on his face.

“…And at once I knew I was not magnificent,” Justin Vernon sings gloomily. The kid finally does do something extra special towards the end, climbing a mountain and transforming a rock into, well, I won’t ruin the finale: READ FULL STORY »

Lady Gaga gets topless, jazzy, chatty for MTV VMA promos: Watch them here

The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards are only 10 days away, and up until now the buzz surrounding this year’s show has been pretty quiet.

There’s no host, and while Adele and Lil Wayne are both entertaining as performers, they don’t exactly make for can’t-miss television. In fact, up until recently, the biggest thing the VMA show had going for it was the planned tribute to Britney Spears.

But Lady Gaga hopes to change that. MTV announced yesterday that the woman with the biggest album sales week of the year will be performing at the show, which will take place Sunday, August 28, at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles.

What’s more, MTV unveiled a trio of promos starring Her Ladyship, all of which feature her sitting at a piano playing a jazzed-up version of “Yoü and I” (which, in unplugged form, borrows a bit from 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up,” doesn’t it?).

In one of those promos, she’s playing topless and lets her hair do a poor job of being her bra. Check out all the promos after the jump: READ FULL STORY »

Flaming Lips, pirate metal, and why you should spend more time in record stores

Last weekend, my wife and I took a trip up to Newport, Rhode Island, to spend some time at the beach.

We got some sun, we ate some seafood, we drank some pretty terrible local beer, and we visited one of my favorite landmarks: The Music Box.

I’ve essentially made a trip to the Music Box once every summer since I was about 14, and though it has expanded its reach beyond music and video over the course of the last decade-and-a-half (if you notice on the store’s official website, they also sell sports memorabilia and “gourmet food”), it remains a good old-fashioned record store at its heart.

I almost always go in looking for a handful of specific things—for no other reason than tradition, I always pick up a copy of the new Warped Tour compilation, as I have been buying those things since they’ve been called Punk-O-Rama; this time around, I was on the hunt for the Flaming Lips’ Heady Nuggs, a limited-edition Record Store Day collection of the group’s first five Warner Bros. albums on vinyl—and also for some browsing: Whenever I visit a new city, I always try to seek out a used record store to dig out soundtrack compilations from ’90s teen movies, which I constantly purchase on the cheap for reasons I’ve lost track of.

The Music Box did not disappoint (though they were playing Train’s cover of “Umbrella” on their in-store sound system, which bummed me out profoundly). I walked out with the Lips set (at a fantastic price) and a promotional compilation of Lollapalooza performers from 1994, which includes tracks by Green Day, L7, Nick Cave, Stereolab, and the Breeders.

But the most thrilling moment of the afternoon was completely unexpected. READ FULL STORY »
