MTV 2011 VMAs: Lady Gaga? She's a man, baby! -- VIDEO

Lady Gaga opened the MTV 2011 Video Music Awards as her male alter ego Jo Calderone, in a simple white t-shirt and over-sized dark blue pants — but not with a song. Instead, Jo indulged in an extended monologue/rant about his “girlfriend” Gaga. “She’s f—ing crazy!” said Gaga-as-Jo. “She comes out of the shower still drippin’, still got the heels on! At first it was sexy, but now I’m just confused.” So were many in the audience, including Britney Spears and Katy Perry, who took in Stefani Germanotta’s drag king performance with a mix of surprise and befuddlement.

“I think it’s really f—ing great that she’s still such a star,” Jo continued. “But how am I supposed to shine?… ’Cause when she gets on the stage, there’s no holding back.” Jo even complained that when Gaga reaches sexual climax, she covers her face. “Like she can’t stand to have one honest moment where nobody’s watching! I want her to be real. She says, ‘I’m not real, I’m theater.’”

Calderone then took to the piano and belted out a robust performance of Gaga’s “You and I,” complete with hard stepping back-up dancers and Brian May from Queen on guitar. Because why not?

Justin Bieber to Selena Gomez: 'My snake's name is Johnson.'

In the midst of an otherwise boring pre-show, Justin Bieber swung in for a quick one-on-one interview with his girlfriend, Selena Gomez. Gomez asked him to describe his outfit. Bieber: “I have a snake. I have red pants. And I have cheetah shoes.” And what is the snake’s name, asked Gomez? Bieber: “My snake’s name is Johnson.” Ah, young love.

EW also caught up with the Biebs, and his very much real baby pet snake, on the red — sorry, the black — carpet. Here was our conversation in full:  READ FULL STORY »

Dave Matthews Band bring their Caravan Tour to NYC's Governors Island before Hurricane Irene hits

The looming threat of Hurricane Irene caused unprecedented evacuations and mass transit shutdowns in New York City, but it wasn’t enough to scare off Dave Matthews Band’s most devoted fans from hopping on boats and heading to Governors Island to take in part their leg of the band’s Caravan Tour. NYC precautions and a summer of weather-related stage collapses be damned, the show was going on.

While DMB, along with a bevy of supporting acts scheduled for the NYC Caravan stop, were slated to play for three days at the island, the impending storm put a halt to Saturday and Sunday’s shows. That meant ticket holders who were hoping to see DMB and other bands like The Roots, Gogol Bordello, Dispatch, The Head and the Heart, and Robert Randolph & the Family Band would have to hope for it to be rescheduled or use their weekend tickets to attend Friday’s show. Which, from the looks of jam-packed boats and a crowd as far as the eye, they most certainly did.

In a festival-like setting (complete with patches of mud, prime for sliding and hippie dancing in), opening bands such as Soulive, Citizen Cope, and O.A.R. split sets between two massive stages. But, by 8:20 p.m., when Dave Matthews Band hit the main stage (named “The Hudson”), the thousands of fans who opted to face-off against Mother Nature on an island that sits 800 yards from downtown Manhattan, gathered together to watch them. Jay-Z and Kanye West making surprise VMA performance? They probably should have advertised that

Considering he has made the show so memorable in the past two years, and he also has an extremely high-profile album out and a tour to promote, it seemed a little bit strange that Kanye West’s name wasn’t on the guest list for tonight’s MTV Video Music Awards. But according to one report, West will be making a surprise appearance on stage with his Watch the Throne tag-team partner Jay-Z for a performance.

According to E!, the duo’s appearance has been kept deep under wraps (their seat-saving placards were missing during rehearsals this week), and according to those connected to the show, the slot was still up in the air (though some speculated that they could end up closing the show). Tom Jones cancels concert due to 'severe dehydration'

Categories: Music

The sex bomb did not explode last night. Classic rock/soul crooner Tom Jones announced in a statement on his website today that “due to severe dehydration,” he was forced to cancel his concert in Monaco on Saturday. The statement emphatically stressed that Jones was not suffering from any heart problems, as had been reported in the British press.

“This was extremely disappointing for Tom, the band and all connected with the tour,” the statement continued. “This was the last date of a very successful three month tour, where many of the shows were in locations that were in the throes of high summer heat.”

The Associated Press is reporting that Jones was admitted to the Princess Grace Hospital in Monaco on Saturday night, and was “doing well” on Sunday, though it’s unclear when he will be released.

Adam Levine lashes out at the VMAs on Twitter

Maroon 5 frontman and The Voice judge Adam Levine will not be tuning in to the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards this Sunday night. He laid out his distaste for the show earlier today on Twitter.

“The VMA’s. One day a year when MTV pretends to still care about music,” he wrote. “I’m drawing a line in the sand. F— you VMA’s.”

An hour later, Levine wrote, “Still waiting to have my ‘Jerry Macguire mission statement moment of deep regret…’ Not happening. Phew!” Clearly, he’s sticking by his opinion (and perhaps wanting somebody to show him the money).

But Levine brings up a reasonable point that comes up around this time every year. Should MTV even bother doing this annual award show? On the one hand, it’s typically an extremely high-rated event, and it has become one of the few pieces of television that links the network of today with its roots.

However, the distance between what MTV was and what MTV has become is driven home powerfully every time the VMAs come around. READ FULL STORY »

MTV's 2011 VMAs have no host, but is that so bad?

Categories: Television, VMAs
Moonman

The annual MTV Video Music Awards are on Sunday, and despite some big performances (including a show-opening appearance by Lady Gaga) and a few eyebrow-raising plans (giving Britney Spears a career retrospective at 29), there doesn’t seem to be very much to talk about.

So perhaps that’s why everybody seems to be up in arms about the fact that the show will not have a host this year (news that shouldn’t have come as a surprise, considering it was delivered with less than a week to go before the show). Sure, it’ll be a little unusual without an emcee, but honestly, it’s probably for the better.  READ FULL STORY »

'The Sing-Off' winning group Committed releases video for debut single 'Break Free': Watch it here!

Committed

While NBC is gearing up for Season 3 of a cappella singing competition The Sing-Off (which will be recapped once again by yours truly), last year’s winning group, Committed, is getting ready to release their debut album on August 29.

The Alabama gospel sextet has just released a music video for their new single, “Break Free,” which is surprisingly not an a cappella track at all! (But don’t worry, the rest of their album, which is streaming in full here, is mostly full of vocal harmonies and void of instrumentation. That’s how we a caholics like it!)

MTV VMAs wildest moments: EW predicts what's coming this Sunday

With the 2011 MTV VMAs just two days away, it got us thinking: Boy, some nutty things have happened over the years. Butts have been exposed, pop queens have kissed, and there have been just plain awkward moments.

The question now is what’s going to happen next: Maybe Lady Gaga will wear a live animal—who knows? So while we wait for the madness to ensue, let’s speculate! Below are some things that just might happen.

Award Theft

Kreayshawn’s “Gucci Gucci” loses to Foster The People’s “Pumped Up Kicks” in the Best New Artist category. While the band accepts their award, ‘Shawn storms the stage (kind of like this guy) and steals the mic and the award, calling them and fellow nominees Tyler, The Creator, Wiz Khalifa, and Big Sean “basic b—-es.” Tyler, of course, is the only one who finds this funny.

Check out the rest after the jump.
