George Michael is experiencing a different kind of “Freedom.” On Monday, the singer took the stage at Prague State Opera, where he promptly announced he had broken up with his longtime partner, Kenny Goss. In fact, they had split long ago — Michael announced that he and Goss had not been together in over two years. “My battles with substances are well-documented and my partner went through similar problems with drink,” he told the crowd before singing “Where I Hope You Are.” “The truth is my love life has been a lot more turbulent than I have let on. This is probably the first break-up song I’ve written.”

The performance was Michael’s first on his “Symphonica” tour. He has not toured since serving jail time last year for driving under the influence. During the show, he also tipped his hat to another singer who struggled with substance abuse — Michael nearly teared up singing a cover of Amy Winehouse’s “Love is a Losing Game.”

Motown hitmaker Nick Ashford passes away at 70

Categories: In Memoriam, Motown, Music

Legendary songwriter Nick Ashford died on Monday in a New York hospital at age 70 of complications related to throat cancer.

Ashford enjoyed considerable success during the 1960s and ’70s with his wife Valerie Simpson, who he married in 1974. Together they were the unstoppable production duo known as Ashford & Simpson, who were behind some of the Motown era’s biggest hits. They wrote and produced such classics as “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” “You’re All I Need to Get By,” “Reach Out and Touch (Somebody’s Hand),” “I’m Every Woman,” “Let’s Go Get Stoned,” and “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing.”

Ashford & Simpson, who were inducted into the Songwriting Hall of Fame in 2002, also performed their own music, producing sixteen albums from 1973 to 1996. Their most successful single, “Solid,” reached number one on Billboard‘s U.S. R&B chart in 1984.

Today is an especially sad day for the music world. Just hours before Ashford’s death, another famed songwriter, Jerry Leiber, passed away at age 78.

Eminem fights darkness with Bruno Mars in 'Lighters' video: Watch it here!

Earlier this summer, Eminem and Royce da 5’9″ resurrected their Bad Meets Evil moniker and dropped Hell: The Sequel, a sturdy EP full of rugged beats and hard-hitting rhymes. (In retrospect, it was sort of like a scrappier version of Watch the Throne, wasn’t it?)

While the album didn’t take hold of the entire music world the way Slim Shady’s Recovery did last summer, it’s about to go gold and has sent its second single “Lighters” up the Billboard Hot 100 (it currently sits at number five).

At long last, Eminem, Royce and guest crooner Bruno Mars have premiered the video for “Lighters,” which just found daylight today. The clip features the man born Marshall Mathers wandering through an extremely dark underground chamber, using only a road flare as illumination. He finds he’s rhyming partner Royce in a jail cell, and eventually they make their way above ground, all while Mars tickles the ivories somewhere else entirely. Check out the clip: READ FULL STORY »

The Decemberists recreate David Foster Wallace's 'Infinite Jest' with help from 'Parks and Recreation' show runner Michael Schur

Categories: Decemberists

If you know how to play Eschaton, congratulations!

Either you’re one of the proud few who’s managed to finish David Foster Wallace’s epic novel Infinite Jest, which invented the game somewhere within its 1,079 pages, or you’re a superfan of the Decemberists, who just made a video for “Calamity Song” that shows how one might play it.

Parks and Recreation co-creator and show runner Mike Schur falls into both categories, which is why he leaped at the chance to recreate an Eschaton match for the video: “This was a weird dream come true,” he tells EW.

When he was a student at Harvard, Schur wrote his thesis about the book, met the author on campus, and later spent years corresponding with Wallace (who sadly committed suicide three years ago, at 46). So after Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy came up with the idea for the video, the band’s manager, whose brother went to school with Schur, knew exactly who to pass it along to.

Meloy wrote “Calamity Song” shortly after finishing Infinite Jest, and says in a statement: “The book didn’t so much inspire the song itself, but Wallace’s irreverent and brilliant humor definitely wound its way into the thing… I can only hope DFW would be proud.”

Watch the video here, and read more below about Schur’s relationship with Wallace, plus his primer on the rules of Eschaton.

Jerry Leiber, co-writer of 'Stand By Me' and 'Hound Dog,' dies at 78

Legendary songwriter Jerry Leiber, who wrote a canon’s worth of popular music with partner Mike Stolle in the years following World War II, passed away of cardiopulmonary failure earlier today. He was 78 years old.

During his 61-year run with Stoller, Leiber concocted some of the definitive songs in early rock and roll, including hits for Elvis Presley (“Hound Dog,” “Jailhouse Rock”) and a number of rhythm and blues stars (“Stand By Me,” “Young Blood,” “On Broadway”).

Born in Baltimore, Leiber made his way to Los Angeles and met Stoller when he was still in high school. The pair bonded over their love of early blues and R&B, and they began constructing songs together almost immediately.

Stoller crafted most of the music, with Leiber taking on the role of lyricist. They sold their first song in 1950, and by 1952 scored their first real hit with “Kansas City.” In 1953, the pair formed their own record label, but really took off in 1956 when Presley took “Hound Dog” (which Leiber and Stoller had originally penned for Big Mama Thornton) and turned it into a gigantic hit when he performed it on The Milton Berle Showthe notorious television appearance that made images of Presley’s hips as dangerous as a thermo-nuclear device. Jennifer Hudson teams with David Guetta on new single 'Night of Your Life': Listen here

Now this is the kind of collaboration that Jennifer Hudson should be doing!

Today, inescapable French DJ a and collaborator with vocalists everywhere David Guetta—yes, him of “Gettin’ Over You,” “Memories,” and current summer party jam “Where Them Girls At”—released a thumping club anthem, “Night of Your Life,” which features vocal stylings from the former American Idol contestant turned Oscar-winning actress and singer. In a word, it’s amazing.

“Night of Your Life” is a wailing, throbbing song that will undoubtedly fill dance clubs, gay clubs, and gay dance clubs everywhere before too long. I’ve been saying it for a long time: Jennifer Hudson needs to be a club queen.

In its own particular way, “Night” is totally finger-wagging delicious in that Deborah Cox “Absolutely Not” type of way. Lots of repetition, with a rise and fall thatdrives toward the chorus’ final, extreme blowout: “Love me, baby treat me right / Make it eternity and not only one night,” Hudson yells, “If you love me til the end of time / Then I will promise you the night of your life.”

Give the song a whirl here:

This week in Lil Wayne: Rapper crashes out on skateboard, reveals new album release info

Categories: Hip-Hop/Rap, Lil Wayne, VMAs

Lil Wayne took a nasty spill last night after his concert in St. Louis, earning himself a pretty ugly cut over his eye following a crash at a skatepark.

The damage, Wayne tweeted this morning, required nine stitches to patch up.

“The Lou’ was good,” he wrote. “But I busted my fuggin head at the sk8park! 9 stitches! Gnarly gash over my left eye!”

The rapper will still be ready to perform at upcoming shows and is also set to hit the stage at MTV’s Video Music Awards this Sunday. And following the evening’s event, his new album Tha Carter IV will be available for download on Amazon and iTunes, and other legal providers at midnight (Aug. 29). Physical versions of the IV drop later that day in stores.

“The MTV Video Music Awards are one of the most watched and respected shows in the industry,” Ronald “Slim” Williams, CEO of Cash Money Records, said to MTV. “Wayne is one of the most respected and prolific artists in the industry. By pairing the release of Tha Carter IV with the VMAs, it will certainly add to the overall anticipation and excitement for fans everywhere for what will surely be an unforgettable evening.”

It’s a smart strategy: Watch Wayne kill it on TV, get excited, then buy CIV.

Looking forward to Weezy’s VMA set and album? While you wait, watch this clip of Wayne skating a few weeks ago in Tampa Bay. He’s no Tony Hawk, but he’s alright: READ FULL STORY »

Despite reports to the contrary, U2′s publicist says that Bono did not visit a hospital in Monaco over the weekend because of complaints of chest pains and heart palpitations.

According to a statement given to Reuters, The 51-year-old Bono (born Paul Hewson) did stop by Princess Grace hospital while he was on vacation, but it was merely for a routine check-up.

“Reports of his being rushed to hospital for emergency treatment are untrue,” the statement read. “Bono is in good health and enjoying a family holiday in the south of France.”

Bono deserves the rest; his band recently completed a massive stadium tour that is now officially the most lucrative jaunt in rock history. All told, they took in over $700 million, besting the Rolling Stones A Bigger Bang tour from a few years back.
