Taylor Swift talks social media, touring, cats in lengthy YouTube interview: Watch it here

In the current generation of socially aware, hyper-connected pop stars, Taylor Swift stands above all others. She has nearly eight million Twitter followers, and her YouTube videos have been watched over half a billion times. (That’s billion, just to drive that point home.)

Of course, she has also sold millions of albums and probably needs a few extra rooms in her house for all of her awards. All of that was driven home during a 40 minute interview posted yesterday as part of the “YouTube Presents” series. According to the moderator, fans submitted 30,000 questions to Swift, though they only had time to ask a handful.

Over the course of the conversation, Swift talked a lot about her songwriting process (she doesn’t know a song is finished until she writes a line that makes her go “Ooh ooh ooh ooh!”), her wackiest fans (a lot of people have been showing up to concerts wearing costumes, including one girl who recently dressed as a chicken), her TV watching habits (she loves Lockup Raw, the MSNBC prison documentary series), and what might be on her next album (she has been writing since she finished writing for Speak Now, though it’ll be at least another year before she attempts to record anything).

It’s a long watch, but Swift is charming enough to hold your attention. And really, do you have anything better to do on a Friday afternoon before a long weekend? Watch the interview after the jump.

The most interesting moment comes at about the 30-minute mark, where Swift talks about how she really likes playing “Dear John” because it has such a huge pyro-filled payoff during the show. That’s exactly the same sort of answer David Lee Roth would have given in 1981, which makes us feel simultaneously old and awesome.

But the most revelatory moment comes very early on, when Swift reveals that her current YouTube obsession is this clip of a group of lion cubs hugging their trainer. Part of Swift’s charm is that she comes across as just like the teenage girls who adore her, and watches just as many cat videos as the rest of us.

What was your favorite revelation from Swift’s YouTube interview? And what cat videos are you currently watching non-stop? We recommend you start here.

I wonder if Speak Now will win Grammys like Fearless did? The cat video EW recommended was hilarious btw!! Taylor Swift and cats. Love em both.

    • Brandy

It has a very good chance of winning a couple but the competition is steep. But I’m hoping it will. In other news, hope she wins CMA Entertainer of the Year. She definitely is one of the favs going into the nominations this month.

I really think Adele is going to sweep the grammys next year.

I haven’t heard as many songs from the Speak Now album on pop radio like the hits she had off Fearless. The crossover feel is not on this album like the last one. I think she geared this more to country stations versus the mainstream feel that Fearless had. She might have gone a different music direction. But she’s still selling out shows. She’ll get nominated at the Grammys but not the top awards. I think this will be Adele’s year because a lot of artists and music industry people love that album 21.

      • Andy

In my opinion, I think Adele is overrated. I prefer 19 over 21 to be quite honest. 21 after a while becomes quite boring. I think she’s another Norah Jones. But I think she will definitely win some next year.

If i had my chance my question would of been “Taylor was does EVERY guy you’ve dated have so many gay rumors about him?” Her hit rate is astounding, that or she’s a professional singer/beard.

I loved this interview. Eventhough I thought the interviewer was a bit awkward tbqh. I teared up when she spoke about the kids with cancer but I thought her definition of what beauty is was so refreshing and was beautifuly said.

  • Brandy

I love her sense of humor. She’s just so beautiful inside and out. Her bubbly personality in such a harsh industry is so nice to see. Great role model for young and old in my opinion.

  • eatyourheartout

She comes across very genuine. I loved the last answer as well.

  • Dave

42 minutes well spent! :) I can’t help it but I couldn’t stop smiling throughout this interview, accept the sad part. Love her personality.

  • KC

I wish she would’ve come clean about her lack of talent in the singing department.

i would love to meet you in person and hang out with you. i am a really fun guy to be with. give me a call some time. 503-298-8570.

Too many distractions with the peole hanging from the ceiling, ballerina’s,fireworks, dancers, and taylor flying in overhead. what happened to just Taylor singing? That is when she shines. She doesn’t need all that flash and noise, it’s like a circus, without the elephant!

    • eatyourheartout

There is an acoustic set during the show, ya know.

    • Andy

As the person before me said, there is an acoustic set and I agree I can listen to Taylor with just her guitar every day. However, this is a mega world tour and she’s at heart a very creative person and always want to give ppl their money’s worth.

  • Wesley

She’s a beautiful human being. I’m so happy for her success. She deserved everything she have.

  • mary

Adele’s music and songs showing so much deeper emotion. She just simple stand there sing along a piano– enough to touch people.
I am not try to put taylor swift down, her first album is much better. Speak Now needs some many hyper and buzz and gossip ( especial the way she talks about relationship– like a 12-16 years girls who has crush to a guy, or a boy friend for weeks and bubbly up about marriage without any life experience)– that is good when you are actually teens. But I think it’s sad to see the industry to put taylor swift on the top. I could not watch the whole interview.

    • lol

you obviously didn’t see her in concert. she can carry a crowd of 60,000 people with just her and her guitar then she can entertain with props, pyro and everything. and you even didn’t see the whole interview to judge her LOL the serious ones are in the middle and in the end.

      • NonEntity

60,000 people are heavy. How did she carry them? What method of carrying was utilized? I am aware that her singing can carry discerning music fans to hell, but that takes no strength whatsoever. And why would we need to “judge her LOL?” Can you define lol? Perhaps you meant lollipop.

  • eqw

She is really cute in this interview.

  • NonEntity

A person who is blond and can sort of sing. Worthy of fame or worthy of a job involving serving food to truckers? I think the latter. Her hair would however make a good wig for a cancer victim. Her songs would make good cancer.
