It’s been a tumultuous few years for Evanescence.
Ever since the band broke out with 2003′s Bring Me To Life, they’ve gone through more line-up switches than Destiny’s Child (and Gemini’s Twin) did during the “Jumpin Jumpin” era.
So it’s understandable that lead singer Amy Lee has some things she wants to get off her chest in Evanescence’s new video for “What You Want,” the first single off the band’s oft-delayed third album, Evanescence, which is set for release on October 11.
Check out the heavy goth-rock head-banger below:
For a moment there, during the trippy “Down down down” section, when Amy Lee was falling from the bridge, I wondered whether the video was going the route of “Bring Me To Life,” but she landed on her feet like a cat (complete with glowing yellow-green eyes!) ready to pounce.
What do you think of Evanescence’s comeback single? Is it “What You Want”? And is anyone else having a tougher time than ever telling Carly Smithson and Amy Lee apart?

Fall Albums We Can’t Wait To Hear

Better than hearing the Five Finger Death Punch or Disturbed for the millionth time.
what…? I dont get it. 5FDP & Disturbed are both awesome bands.
Never been a huge fan, but it’s catchy.
Yeah, wow, she and Carly look more alike than ever. Easy note though, Carly has that full sleeve tattoo. BTW, if you like Evanescence, take a listen to Lacuna Coil, Nightwish and After Forever. LC is probably the best of the bunch, but I really wish the male singer would stick with backgrounds and let Christina belt away on her own.
Sounds great.. can’t wait for the new album. Bummed to see this was filmed at Coney Island at the end of
July and maybe could have gone to meet them.
@darclyte… Within Temptation is also a great band along the same sort of genre.. They are a Dutch band with some really great songs. What Have You Done is really similar to Bring Me to Life
I think the video is probably the best video they’ve ever done. I really like the song as well, but I’m aware that there are some songs on their new album that are absolutely amazing and blow any songs Evanescence has previously recorded out of the water. I can’t wait until the October 11 release of the album!
This is so 00′s ( say that the same way people say ‘that’s so Eighties”) .
Trying waaaaay too hard.
Evanescence is America’s response to Finland’s Nightwish or the Netherland’s Within Temptation. For full symphonic metal joy, look to Europe. That being said, I wish more Americans would allow symphonic metal to become an organic offering from musicians here.
The video is a little campy, no doubt, but i can’t stop watching it. It was very well done and Amy’s make-up looks awesome! Can’t wait for the album.
Btw, i see no confusion between Amy and Carly. Carly doesn’t sing as well and seems to force the notes out a little more than Amy needs to. But to each their own i suppose
I agree. They both have light eyes and dark hair, but otherwise don’t look alike or sound alike at all.
I’m so glad to see that they’ve made such a good comeback. I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of Evanescence fans dislike this song because it’s different to many of their other tracks but I love how catchy, edgy and fun this is – it is one of the only Evanescence songs I can tap my foot to.
Loads of rock bands are becoming way too poppy – I assume it is in order to appeal to a wider audience. I like how even with a new sound Evanescence is still an unmistakable ROCK group.
I see what you mean about Carly Smithson – who I hadn’t heard of until I read this article.
But, personally, I think Carly is a marginally better singer though Evanescence is a better band and I prefer Amy Lee’s voice overall. She’s very unique.
Can someone please tell me, is that Ben Moody in We Are The Fallen? It looks a lot like him and the drummer looks a lot like a former Evanescence member as well.
And as for the new video: It’s so awesome!
I am glad that Evanescence is making a comeback. I love the new single and how it has a new sound to it. The video is awesome! I think that Carly Smithson isn’t as good of a singer as Amy Lee is, but they do kind of look alike.
I love this song! it would be amazing if itll become a hit song! really wish and hope ’cause all there is on the radio now is just party and club songs! with the exception of Adele <3
ill be requesting this song on pop stations
Am I the only one who is wondering what this song is about? I admit I’m middle-aged but telling a preteen or adolescent to do “what you want” is not going to have a realistic and or sensible response. Don’t mind the music, but let’s sing songs that elevate our teenagers thinking rather then the dark, gothic mentality–way too much of that already…
Amy’s voice is as always, amazing. great song.
