Good point….Love the way you lie is totally a ballad as is empire state of mind. If you can’t dance to it, then it’s a ballad as far as i’m concerned.

    • Trent

Well, you are wrong. Neither of those can be classified as ballads.

All that really matters is that “Someone Like You” is an incredible song, and definitely deserves to be a #1 single.

Already Gone by Kelly Clarkson is a true ballad that should have reached number 1 …It did on some radio charts but to me that is a an example of a Ballad

    • PN

It peaked at No. 13, but it was against a lot of tight competition that year.

    • Ray (a different one)

It doesn’t really matter where a song peaks on a chart anymore, since there are so many of them. I think a larger measure of a song’s success is how much airplay it gets, and how well it is liked, after its time on a Billboard chart. “Already Gone” is still played alot on the stations I listen to. In fact, I can’t remember the last time I heard former No. 1 “Take a Bow”. Hmmm.

Oh, and none of those songs mentioned in this stupid article are ballads. If it ain’t gettin’ played on the Lite Rock Less Talk Listen at Work station, it ain’t a ballad. They may incorporate up-tempo singles to their playlists these days, but they are not playing T.I. or Jay-Z.

There pretty much haven’t been any good ballads since the 80s, culminating in some Bryan Adams Everything I Do.. None of the crap since qualifies. Adele has a genuine ballad. Bring back some Lionel Richie. And where’s Peabo Bryson. I want me some Peabo BrysoN!

    • PN

If only Lionel and Peabo can get back in the studio and crank out some quality albums with their familiar hit making formula of their own ballads, they can get back up there. Lionel continues to make good albums, especially the last two of Coming Home and Just Go.

I heard Adele’s Someone Like You played between Jennifer Lopez’ On The Floor and Britney Spears’ I Wanna Go on the radio last week! And it blended very well between the two songs! So there, a ballad can be No. 1 and can be played against the dance pop numbers that have been common on the charts! People just weren’t ready for a ballad to hit number one until this one! But this Adele song is fabulous on its own merits! This is all piano on this song.

  • Randy

None of the songs that Kyle Anderson listed are ballads.

  • Gene

That Billboard article is actually a week old, posted when Someone Like You reached number one (which was last week).

  • HardGainer

The fact that some misguided people should think that Love and Empire are ballads certainly proves the point that we have been missing ballads for a long time until now….
