Interscope recording artist Haley Reinhart (typing that will never get old) was recently down. In New. Orleeeeans. with her fellow Season 10 American Idol contestants — and while there, she stopped by Irvin Mayfield’s Jazz Playhouse to coo a smooth 11-minute rendition of “God Bless the Child” with Irvin Mayfield and his band.
The laid-back session features some astonishingly high runs, bluesy growls, and an extended call-and-response scat session with a trumpet; check out the video (uploaded by Casey Abrams…) below:
I can only hope that Ms. Reinhart’s trip to the Big Easy is an indication of what sort of music she’ll be making in her post-Idol career. I wouldn’t want her to go full-on jazz—that would pretty much guarantee that no one would buy her music—but with such clear knowledge of music history and vocal chops like hers, it would be a shame to hear the growler shoehorned into a too-poppy sound. She’s made to sing soulful stuff like this!

Can someone get her in the studio with Mark Ronson? He really created a sound for Amy Winehouse that was contemporary, and stayed true to her soul roots. Would love to see a Ronson-Reinhart pairing. Sonic bliss
That was amazing! I don’t want her entire album to be jazz either, but I really hope she throws one or two of them in there.
I’m sorry but there’s a lot of people that actually enjoy jazz and buys jazz albums, good jazz albums, of which there’s a lack of. I hope she makes a really good jazz album that sells.
…She is the modern day ‘Pied Piper”, traveling the country and creating more “WTF” moments, creating more “Haliens” as she goes. She doesn’t need an entourage, fireworks or dancers….she just needs her charm, her beauty, and, most importantly, her voice. What’s fun for all Haliens is…It’s only the beginning. The best is yet to come

Great session at one of the top hotels in the city. Mayfield and his band are tops. However, Grady Smith should learn how New Orleanians elected the preferred pronunciation of their city’s name ’76, Times Pic. (two words, four syllables) New Or le ‘aanz! Enjoy but give props!

Gasp. Holy bleep. I LOVED that!!! Big thanks to Casey for capturing and sharing that with us! I just fell in love with Haley Reinhart all over again. I can’t believe she just turned 21…wow…she is really something special.
Wowsa. She holds her own with Prof Mayfield. She didn’t even study at Berklee, Julliard or Mayfield’s own Jazz program. Props to community college.
