Last night’s episode of The Tonight Show operated in a business-as-usual fashion, delivering host Jay Leno’s tired riffs about the day’s news, a vaguely interesting conversation with X Factor judge Simon Cowell (who said that Nicole Scherzinger is wackier than Paula Abdul because at least Paula knows she’s crazy), and a show-closing performance of “Love You Like a Love Song” by Selena Gomez (whose fans would have been up way past their bedtimes in order to catch her).

Check out the run through one of EW’s favorite singles of the year below.

Gomez sounded a bit like she was running into monitor problems in the beginning; the first verse lacked a bit of confidence. She’s a professional, so she fought through it, but it’s a shame that she didn’t quite knock this one out of the park. Still, her band (the Scene) is an underrated combo who compliment her quite nicely.

And we didn’t get a solid look at her wrists, but it appears as though her “Justin” tattoo was one of a temporary variety. Readers, did you love it like a Leno song?

I like her voice. I guess she doesn’t do enough runs and over-singing for the critics. But I don’t know.. I just like her voice.

  • UGH

Pretty bad singing there. Cute girl. I’m sure when the career dries up and she stops being Bieber’s beard, she’ll be in Maxim.
Also, “her band is an underrated combo”.
    Hahahahaha.

When I was watching last night, I couldn’t help but wonder what Simon thought of her. I mean, honestly, she’s just not very good.

Companies have enough money to convince many intellectually bankrupt people that no talent equals talent. The TV industry that depends on this corporate money will keep promoting whoever pays them the most, regardless of quality. Like vermin, humans are drawn into psychological ad campaigns designed to lead to a love of garbage.

I’m really getting tired of this chicklet.

Her voice has improved, but no enough.
She just can’t sing, she doesn’t have the voice
for it. She needs to stick to just acting seriously.
And I agree with the person who said that her career will dry up after she breaks up with Justin Bieber. Facts.

You realize her biggest hit was still before she was ever with Justin.

I do agree, her voice is not strong enough live, but she could sing and it is good enough to sell records. As most people say, everything comes with practice. She could develop her voice as time flies. Selena personally says it herself, she prefers to be known as an actress, singing is just part of the fun and a means to connect with her fans. Not everybody could afford going to concert so hearing something nice on records sometimes are not as bad. In live shows, you have to consider the environment, the way you feel at the time, every factor will affect the performance. I have seen in some shows she is good, but there are also times when she gets more tense and it didn’t come out as great. The reason why her voice has improved is because she is getting more exposure in tours and she is becoming more confident as well. I heard from an interview with Simon on whether he will pick Selena if she auditions in a singing contest, he said, “Yes, and I like her.” Simon is a critique, he sees potentials. I don’t think he said that just to get the media off his back. Selena got her first hit “Naturally” in 2009. Honestly, the first time I heard it was on radio. It has gone platinum ever since. Her achievement is good enough for her, but don’t compare her to others. You have to remember in every aspects of liking it is always to each his own. Her dream is not to become the greatest singer, but to become the best actress.
