Hear LeAnn Rimes cover George Jones' classic 'He Stopped Loving Her Today' -- An EW exclusive

LeAnn Rimes is no stranger to covers — her very first hit, “Blue,” was a song originally intended for Patsy Cline, and the singer has gone on to reinterpret the classics of artists ranging from Dolly Parton to Prince (no, really).

As you might guess from the title, her latest disc, Lady & Gentlemen, out Sept. 27, finds Rimes focusing solely on the work of male singers, including Ernie Ford, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, and George Jones, whose iconic “He Stopped Loving Her Today” we have for you exclusively below:

I know she recorded the cover for her new album, but that s GEORGE’s song! Nobody should ever cover it again.

Mr Jones wrote a beautiful song and I’m sure he’s thrilled to have it introduced to a new audience. The greatest compliment to songwriters is to have their music performed and loved. He seems thrilled with Ms Rimes doing the cover so I think that sets the standard for the rest of us.

      • Holly

Actually George didn’t write the song. Songwriter Bobby Braddock did. (smiles)

God bless you and them and LeAnn always!!!

P.S. I love to hear LeAnn sing this song! (smiles)

George Jones said about this song “Damn this girl can sing” and i second that. Her voice is amazing

On one hand, she does a wonderful job with the song; being covered by a female, the comparisons to the original are diminished. On the other hand…HSLHT is widely considered to be THE greatest song in country music history (it won the CMA Song of the Year trophy TWO years in a row, and became an instant classic). It’s a benchmark for excellence in the industry. There have been very few attempts to cover it, because there’s just no coming close to the original. So hats off to LeAnn – it’s a gutsy move, and she pulls it off nicely.

OMG, What a beautiful version. She can sing anything. Love this.

  • David

Great rendition! She didn’t try to oversing it or change it to make it her own. She just applied her amazing voice to it. I think respecting the original was a great choice with this song. George was right: “Damn this girl can sing”

  • gonzo

You can’t touch the original, but this is an amazing rendition. Nice job, LeAnn. I take my hat off to ya.

  • StewyFan

She really does have a gorgeous voice, and this is a beautiful version of the song. It’s too bad that her personal life overshadows her talent. But then again that would be her fault.

  • Kyle

A beautiful rendition of the saddest song ever sung.

  • Templar

This is why country music endures while rock, disco, rap, etc. dominate for awhile and then weaken or disappear entirely. Country is the bedrock of America’s heart.

  • Kelcie

What I love about LeAnn is that she conveys so much the story of a song just with how she sings and emotes through her notes. I hope this album does well and puts the focus where it needs to be for her: on her talent.

    • Sunshine

      I hope so too

  • Lizann

Great that shes bringing attention to these beautiful songs. What a beautiful voice she has.I agree with Jones, she can sing, and her personal life is none of my business.Every saint has a past and every sinner has a future and I carry no stones with me.The person who does is mighty brave.

  • Lila

So tired of her ripping off other artists. She has a lovely voice but is so pretentious and self absorbed that I cannot support her. And the recent bikinis and LA lifestyle is not country to me.

    • Chris

The last time she did a covers record was 1999…11 years ago. And yes, she lives the LA lifestyle, but I’m pretty sure there are country singers that live outside of Nashville. There are people who like to listen to country music in California.

    • Luke

“Pretentious and self absorbed” is so appropriate. Not listening to someone who lied continuously while breaking up a family while she was married to a decent person and then, to top it off, copied and taunted the ex-wife while making ridiculous twitter remarks. It’s like a vulture trying to sing a love song.

      • Cathy

she is a terrible person who to this very day encourages daily bullying and harrassment of Brandi Glanville by Anthony Mejean and Bradley Moore by ignoring their actions yet still employing and actively communicting with them on the very public domain with which they bully her precious “bonus” boys’ mother.

      • Cathy

#allegedly of course, unless calling someone a drunken whore or drawing mean spirited pictures of women isn’t bullying or harassment to you. It just seems that way

      • lizzie

I’m assuming that you know all of these people personally and have first hand knowledge of their lives……………Oh wait ,could it be that you’re a tabloid junkie with the IQ to believe every thing you read?
