It’s no secret that Mariah Carey has range, but that’s just become even more apparent: A clever video has surfaced on YouTube that splices together Mimi singing through what the video claims are five octaves, two notes, and two semitones.
“That’s over 65 keys!!!!” the video says at the end. You knew she could do it, but actually hearing her go from low to high in a cascade — with each note flashing on the screen as it happens, each about one second apart — is pretty stunning.
Through the video, you can identify a variety of Mariah’s songs in the background — everything from her soaring rendition of “O Holy Night” to “Forever” — although a huge portion of it is pulled from her two notable Christmas albums. (Go figure.)

I’ve always appreciated her incredible range. She’s one of the few pop singers right now who can actually sing like that.
I agree. PLUS Mariah writes or co-writes about 90% of her material. She’s a good songwriter and has a knack for creating beautiful melodies.

While she might have an amazing range, this clip is horrible!! Splicing together notes from songs (with different volume levels) makes it difficult to appreciate the range.

Say what you will about Mariah but you can’t deny that the woman can sing! Her range can put to shame so many other artists; it’s not even fair. I like Christina, Adele, and Aretha but even they can’t do what Mariah can do with her pipes.
You’re high. Aretha is regarded as the greatest female singer of rock/pop/soul. Period. Aretha can express more actual emotion, truth and soul with one note than Mariah can with all her octaves. Such a comparison makes you sound ridiculous.
Soul is subjective. Just because she has that title doesn’t mean its true. I hear the emotion and soul in Mariah’s voice.
Love me some Aretha, but she’s not considered the best pop singer. Barbra Streisand holds that distinction for the genre.
Wouldn’t “could” be a better tense than “can” since her voice hasn’t been that amazing in over 10 years? She’s still a decent singer, but she’s not what she was at her peak. And she doesn’t have the soul of the three singers you mention.
