She’s already covered Velvet Underground god Lou Reed – so why not Depeche Mode?
The Britain’s Got Talent contestant turned global star takes on the dark-rockers’ classic “Enjoy the Silence” on her upcoming third album, Someone to Watch Over Me, out November 1st.
Slowed down to showcase Boyle’s church-choir vocals, the tune seems almost unrecognizable save for those famous lyrics. Perfectly timed orchestra swells add a nice emotional punch to Boyle’s soft delivery.
Listen here and tell us, what do you think?
Is this a good change-up for Boyle? While we’re on the subject, what other leather-pantsed hits would you like to see her cover? Or do you think she should stick with musical-theater showstoppers like “I Dreamed A Dream”?

Thanks for ruining one of the best songs of the past 30 years Susan Boyle.
This is actually quite lovely. Finally Miss Thing puts out something fairly interesting and worthy of that voice. Now if they’d just make a dance remix…
Its just a little toooo sloowwww and toooo listlessss. A bit more of the soaring at the end put in the beginning would’ve been better. Also, where’s the “belting”? This woman can SINGGGG. Why not use more of a full throttle voice on her songs? She’s often too soft.
Such irony in the fact that Depeche Mode fans are attacking Susan so cruely with words, because she is singing ‘their’ song about how much words hurt.
Good point CBill.
Point taken CBill. As a diehard Mode fan I can appreciate your comment. thank you.
I’m a depeche mode fan but i stopped caring a very long time ago.
not bad
What a pleasant surprise…
This was beautiful! Thank you!!!
Why would Depeche Mode allow her to ruin their song like that. I honestly don’t get the whole Susan Boyle thing, I think her voice is very forgettable at best. Oh well, i guess it is just a “to each his own” situation.
Well given that Susan Boyle sells 10 million copies of her albums each time she releases one, the 7 cents royalty songwriters get for their composition tells you why. Also, Depeche Mode’s sales are now negligbile. They need to eat……..so they need $$$$
Depeche Mode makes their $$$$ by touring. Record sales have never really been a huge factor.
dm are multi millionaires FYI
They might not need it, but they obviously wanted it because I doubt they offered the right to this for nuttin!
Great cover of Enjoy The Silence. Totally different vibe when Susan Boyle sings it, but the isolation and loneliness, at the heart of the song, are even more compelling.
I prefer the original.
I don’t care for this at all. But I think she could have done something really nice with “Somebody”
Now that would have been funny.
She didn’t ruin it, she changed it. A song this meaningful and beautiful can withstand change.
I agree Sue, it’s different from the original but that’s not always a bad thing. Her voice always conveys a lot of emotion and I think she gives the song even more meaning.
I like it, and appreciate the 1960′s feel of it. Susan Boyle does seem to prefer to sing cover songs slowly. Eva Cassidy did that and was attacked by many.
Susan Boyle is one of the most talented, versatile, intriguing singers to come along in years. She doesn’t have to be pigeonholed into any genre. She has shown she can sing them all and do it brilliantly,
Not feeling it, not feeling the connection between her and the song
This is a hauntingly beautiful rendition of Enjoy the Silence, music and lyrics go together perfectly.
Susan Boyle’s voice takes you with her into that silent place where words are unnecessary and only do harm.
Pleasure Little Treasure
That’s not arrogant at all.
I am a Depeche Mode fan, and I think this is a beautiful cover. Very ethereal…nicely done.
Martin gore is rolling in his grave
Um, Martin Gore isn’t dead.
He is rolling in his wheel chair.
I don’t doubt it, but I don’t think this little cover is the cause. She did a respectable job and I think Gore would approve.
he would have had to to give permission for her to cover his song. And as a matter of fact his original demo was very slow
Actually, Boyle’s cover is a lot closer to Martin Gore’s original demo than DM’s later version. Boyle and Gore have a lot in common.
