Tony Bennett on Amy Winehouse: 'She was very nervous' recording 'Body & Soul' -- watch the video here

Tony-Bennett

It’s pretty poetic that Amy Winehouse’s final recording was a collaboration with Tony Bennett on the classic song “Body & Soul.” The tune will appear on Bennett’s upcoming Duets II album, which also features collaborations with Lady Gaga, Aretha Franklin, Carrie Underwood, and a host of other huge current stars.

“Body & Soul,” the album’s first official single, will drop next Wednesday, September 14, and Bennett himself spoke to Entertainment Weekly for a feature that will be gracing your local newsstand on Friday, September 16.

In the conversation, Bennett talked extensively about recording with the late chanteuse, who he saw as a kindred spirit carrying on an endangered musical legacy.

“What I love about Amy Winehouse is that, of all the singers since the Beatles, you automatically check everyone out who’s a lot younger, but there’s been such a big walk away from jazz,” Bennett told EW‘s Melissa Maerz. “Some people think that anyone could sing jazz, but they can’t. It’s a gift of learning how to syncopate but it’s also a spirit that you’re either born with or you’re not. And Amy was born with that spirit.”

Based on the clip below of Bennett and Winehouse in the studio (a brief bit of which appeared on the MTV Video Music Awards a few weeks ago), the late singer seemed at ease working with one of her idols on one of her dad’s favorite songs. Keith Richards' memoir to become a movie -- so who should play him onscreen?

Keith-Richards

Earlier this week, Keith Richards revealed that there are plans afoot to turn his bestselling autobiography Life into a movie, according to British newspaper the Telegraph. But which actor possesses the requisite rock’n'roll swagger to embody the Human Riff?

One obvious choice is, of course, Richards’ buddy Johnny Depp, whose four Keef-inspired performances in the Pirates of Caribbean quadrilogy could be regarded as one long audition tape for the project.

Depp can also play guitar, is currently at work on a documentary about the Rolling Stones legend, and has the added advantage of being one of the biggest movie stars on the planet.

But there are a number of Richards’ fellow Brits who might consider themselves in with a chance of getting the gig, from David Tennant to Jason Isaacs to Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch. And let’s not forget Robert Pattinson, another hugely famous, guitar-playing thesp — and one who has experience playing a character with mixed feelings about direct sunlight.

Who would you like to see playing Keith (and, for that matter, Mick)? Let us know in the comments below.

Rapper Game quotes Beyonce, talks about gay people, and really should have stopped there

Game

For all the violence and misogyny present on his chart-topping The R.E.D. Album, Game has been getting into hot water lately thanks to stuff he’s been saying outside of his music. He got into a bunch of trouble a few weeks ago for pulling a Twitter prank on the sheriff’s office, and now he’s mouthing off about AIDS.

During a conversation with VLADTV, the Compton rapper born Jayceon Taylor was asked about whether or not it would surprise him if an established rapper came out as gay. “I don’t have a problem with gay people,” he said. “Beyoncé should have said, ‘Who run the world? Gays.’ Because they’re everywhere. And rightfully so … It’s a free country. The Game does not have a problem with gay people.”

That all sounds well and good, but then the conversation drifts into the sort of conspiracy theories you might hear on that TV show hosted by the former wrestler. (No, the other one.) “Game has a problem with people who are pretending not to be gay, but who are gay,” he said, suddenly becoming yet another wrestler. “The number one issue with that is you could be fooling somebody, and you can give them AIDS, and they can die. That in the closet s— is real scary. It’s not cool to be in the closet. Be gay and be proud.”

So in Game’s mind, there are a lot of closet homosexuals (carrying AIDS, of course) who make a habit of faking out ladies to spread the disease? That seems less like an epidemic and more like an urban legend the dude heard once. Snopes is silent on this one, so it’s probably got a few rumors to go before it becomes a full-blown piece of playground fakery.

In all honesty, it’s refreshing to hear the first part of Game’s statement— too many rappers are hostile towards gay people (and very willing to voice those opinions in an open forum).

Still, the scenario wherein closeted guys fool women into sex and kill them with AIDS seems like a problem that is not actually a problem. You know, like the debt ceiling.

T.I.'s sent back to federal prison for violating parole terms once again

Cruising in style wasn’t the reason T.I. got sent back to the bing last week, just two days after being moved to a halfway house. It’s who was on the bus with him that got him in trouble.

Yahoo reports that the rapper was sent back to federal prison after officials found out an unauthorized manager and a TV producer were traveling with him on his way home to Atlanta.

As we reported, T.I., 30, is set to debut a VH1 reality show on Dec. 5 at 10 p.m., chronicling his life after serving nearly a year of hard time for parole violation, which stemmed from a 2008 weapons conviction.

T.I. had his wife, Tameka Cottle Harris, manager Brian Sher, and producer Cris Abrego, the co-president of 51 Minds Entertainment, which handles several reality TV shows (Brandy and Ray J: A Family Business, La La’s Full Court Life) in attendance during the ride.

However, Abrego insists that no business was being handled on the bus, as the TV deal had been negotiated and agreed upon earlier in the summer.

At press time reps from VH1 did not respond to inquiries regarding how these recent events would effect the show.

Paramore debuts new song 'Renegade' at New York City concert: Watch it here

Paramore

What does teen spirit smell like? Well, it has many scents—some pleasant, others not so much.

On a rainy Wednesday night in New York City, scores of damp youngsters piled into Terminal 5 to see punk group Paramore as they celebrated the 15th anniversary of their record label Fueled By Ramen.

In a black sleeveless shirt and pants patching her blazing red hair, lead singer Hayley Williams so sweetly raged the night away. Songs like “That’s What You Get,” “Ignorance,” and an encore of “Misery Business“– where Williams brought up a dirty-blond Pennsylvanian fan to scream the “Oh, it was never my intention to brag” hook– drove the crowd wild.

Mix loud live Paramore tunes with adolescent energy and you get an odor that smells something like a herd of steamy, wet German shepherd puppies.

One cut that particularly made them bark and their shaggy heads bop was a new song they performed. Williams cautiously introduced it.

“This next song, we have never, ever, ever played before. And sometimes this happens and it goes wrong,” she began after changing into a leopard tank top. “I just need you guys to have fun anyways. We’ll be putting this song online for you guys to have as soon as we can, as soon as possible. We’re working on it. It’s called ‘Renegade.’”

Watch them perform it after the jump:

Dave Grohl still doesn't care for 'Glee' on 'Chelsea Lately': Watch it here

If Dave Grohl didn’t love being in a rock band as much as he did, he totally could have his own talk show.

The former Nirvana drummer and longtime Foo Fighters frontman is open, biting, honest, and always hilarious, whether it’s in an award-winning video or as a guest on Chelsea Lately.

Grohl did the latter last night, and his eight-minute conversation with host Chelsea Handler (which you can watch below) was not entirely revelatory, but it was almost unbearably charming.

Grohl hit on a bunch of topics, including his band’s win at the VMAs (he joked that had Cloris Leachman not been present, he would have been the oldest person at the show), the dearth of “real” rock bands, his group’s approach live (“We don’t sound like the record, we sound like five dudes beating the s— out of our instruments”), and his stance on Glee (“As a rock musician, why should you have to say ‘OK Glee, take my song and turn it into a f—ing musical?”). Check out their conversation below. READ FULL STORY »

Jury selection begins (again) in Michael Jackson doctor trial

Categories: Michael Jackson, Music

Preliminary jury selection begins today in the involuntary manslaughter trial of Michael Jackson’s doctor, Conrad Murray, charged in Jackson’s 2009 drug-related death. It won’t necessarily be easy. Before the trial was postponed in May, it took three days just to secure a pool of potential jurors who weren’t already familiar with the case. Last week, the defense requested another delay while the court determined whether the jury ultimately could be sequestered so that it wouldn’t be “poisoned” by media coverage, but an appeals court denied that request yesterday, according to CNN. Direct questioning of qualified jury candidates will begin Sept. 23 and opening statements are expected four days later.
