Yes, folks, it’s that time of the year again. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has released its nominations for the class of 2012 and the list is as follows: Guns N’ Roses, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Beastie Boys, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, the Cure, Heart, Eric B. and Rakim, the Small Faces/Faces, Rufus with Chaka Khan, War, Laura Nyro, Donovan, Freddy King, and the Spinners. Those who receive enough votes will be inducted on April 14, 2012, at the Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.

As always with the list of nominees, several questions immediately spring to mind. Will this be the year for the Beasties and the Chili Peppers, both of whom have been nominated before (as have Nyro, War, and Donovan)? Has the Hall of Fame done enough — or too much — to highlight the creative contributions of hip-hop to “rock and roll”? And will the classic, ’80s-era lineup of Guns N’ Roses reunite to play, call each other names, or compare rehab facilities?

Send us your thoughts!

Earlier this year, MTV augmented their VMAs and Movie Awards with the O Music Awards, which sought to reward musicians, fans, and digital gurus for their greatness in the virtual realm. Apparently it went well, because O Music Awards 2 are coming back for another round of prizes on October 31.

Once again, the nominees in categories like Most Outrageous Tweet and Too Much A– For TV are a mix of mainstream names (Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry), fringe favorites (Bjork, Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips), and envelope-pushing left-field nods (SoundCloud CEO Alexander Ljung is nominated for Best Music NILF, with the “N” standing for “Nerd” in that particular entry).

Watch a further explanation of the show below, featuring guest star Demi Lovato, and scroll down for the complete list of nominees: READ FULL STORY »

American Idol Season 10 contestant Stefano Langone has signed to 19 Management, the same company which represents fellow Idol alums like Pia Toscano, Haley Reinhart (both of whom are signed to Interscope Records), and James Durbin. He will be co-managed by Red Light Management.

Currently, Stefano isn’t signed to a label, but according to a source at 19 Entertainment, he is “in the studio” and working on music.

While he never seemed like a major contender for the Idol crown during his run the show, Stefano did seem hipper and more stylish than most contestants, and with the right production team he could fit right in with the MTV crowd.

Do you think Stefano will be able to parlay his Idol success into a legitimate recording career?

B.o.B returns with Lil Wayne-featuring cut about weed smoke : Listen to his new single 'Strange Clouds' here

b-o-b

It’s been a while since we’ve heard a newbie from Atlanta rhymer B.o.B.  — the man behind two of 2010’s bigger hits: the Bruno Mars-assisted “Nothin’ on You” and “Airplanes.”

Now he’s gearing up for the release of his sophomore album, and today he dropped its lead single, “Strange Clouds.” If the title didn’t tip you off, the song’s about getting high and features an unlikely guest, Lil Wayne.

At another time in Weezy’s life, a verse about his love for herbal essence would make sense. Two years ago, he was one of the most lifted rappers out there. But now that he’s on probation due to his fairly recent release from prison, he’s banned from drinking alcohol and using drugs — marijuana included.

Granted, this is art, and he’s free to say whatever he wants. But it’s difficult for me to believe Wayne when he says he’s “smokin’ on that strong/ That Arnold Schwarzenegger.” He’s certainly not talking about a cigar.

B.o.B, who doesn’t have the eyes of the law on him, kicks the song off with some fun lines. “I’mma hit her with that pipe/ Call that Nancy Kerrigan,” he starts. “Stay on the greenest greens/ Call us vegetarians.” Listen to it after the jump.

Orange County’s piano-friendly post-pop-punk combo Jack’s Mannequin are dropping their third album People and Things on October 4 (pre-order available here).

You probably know them from their 2008 hit “The Resolution.” The band, led by former Something Corporate frontman and acute lymphoblastic leukemia survivor Andrew McMahon, brings together the energy of youthful post-emo and the poignant power of McMahon’s been-there-survived-that lyrics.

Find the exclusive premiere of “Television,” a new track from People and Things, below: READ FULL STORY »

Radiohead drop woozy 'Lotus Flower' and 'Staircase' on 'SNL': What did you think?

radiohead

Saturday Night Live opened up its 37th season over the weekend with guns blazing. The show trotted out record-breaking, much-beloved host Alec Baldwin, whipped off their first funny political cold open since the 2008 election, and invited Radiohead, one of the most cultishly adored bands on the planet, to stand in as the musical guest.

In case you have forgotten, Radiohead actually put out an album this year. It’s called The King of Limbs, and it was almost completely forgettable. Objectively speaking, it’s another impressive sonic accomplishment, full of rumbles and hums and womb-like soundscapes. But once upon a time, the band used to write real songs, and those are nowhere to be found on The King of Limbs.

They didn’t do much to change minds on Saturday night, as frontman Thom Yorke and his collective of bleep-bloop obsessives twitched their way through a pair of tunes: the sinister b-side “Staircase” and the sorta-single “Lotus Flower,” the latter of which you can check out below. READ FULL STORY »

Kelly Clarkson's new 'Mr. Know It All' video: Watch it here

After providing a teaser of her new video last week, Kelly Clarkson released the full clip for “Mr. Know It All” over the weekend.

In it, the pop star sings in a room with wallpaper made of newspaper clippings, most of which feature ugly headlines about her. Next she sits down and watches a video of herself dancing on top of a bar. Then she does what no celeb should do if they want to maintain their sanity: she reads the comments section of a blog post about her.

After realizing she doesn’t need to be with a guy that’s constantly ordering her around and judging her, she has a decision to make. Will Kelly stay or go? Check out the video after the jump and see if she finds her sunshine after all.

Coldplay pay tribute to R.E.M. with cover of 'Everybody Hurts': Watch it here

Chris-Martin

With their deft ability to keep one foot in the underground and the other riding the mainstream wave, R.E.M. have served as a source of inspiration for hundreds of bands who believed they could start out small and gradually become stadium-fillers.

Though they’ve done it in a conflated period of time, Coldplay certainly followed that script, and R.E.M.’s breakup has clearly had a serious impact on frontman Chris Martin. During a concert on Saturday in Atlanta, only about 70 miles west of R.E.M’s hometown of Athens, Martin tipped his hat to his heroes with a cover of “Everybody Hurts.”

“One of our favorite bands of all time, for some crazy reason, have finished,” Martin announced from the stage, introducing his cover. “And it’s sad. Please don’t judge this cover version on its musical merits. See it for the gesture rather than its actual sound. This is just to show how much they meant to us.”

Check out his acoustic run through “Everybody Hurts” — which inspired quite the singalong in Atlanta’s Piedmont Park — after the jump. READ FULL STORY »
