Florence + The Machine debut trippy video for 'Shake It Out': Watch here!

Florence Welch became a bigger-than-indie darling when Florence + the Machine’s debut album Lungs burst into unlikely mainstream success, thanks in large part to enigmatic breakout single “The Dog Days Are Over.”

Can she keep up the same sort of curious energy that was so vividly on display when she played the MTV Video Music Awards in 2010?

Based on the just-premiered video for “Shake It Out,” the first official single from Florence + the Machine’s sophomore album Ceremonials, the answer is a resounding yes. In the nearly five minute technicolor blast (which you can watch below after the jump), Welch splits her time mourning and dancing her way through a stately psychedelic costume party (which can’t help but remind the world of Eyes Wide Shut, except with prettier music, and without all the strange rhythmic humping).

Of course, Welch does all of this while wearing stunning clothes. Is there a pop icon who dresses better than Welch? That one red dress is pretty magical.

Give “Shake It Out” a spin after the jump.

Based on what we’ve heard so far (including the unofficial single “What the Water Gave Me”), it appears as though Ceremonials will make a very strong bid as one of the best albums of a very crowded field of fall releases.

So far, it appears as though the more raw rock side of Lungs has been jettisoned (nothing sounds as jangly and loose as “Kiss With a Fist”), but those garage guitars have been replaced by lush strings and a bigger focus on Welch’s heavenly vocal cords. Look for Ceremonials to bowl you over with the sheer power of loveliness.

Why isn’t this band more popular here in the states? I’ve been a fan since 2009 when Lungs came out, but whenever I talk about them people look at me like I’m a ghost. It’s kinda sad.

Even more sad is that I know CEREMONIALS drops on Halloween in Europe, but I can’t find the release date for here in the states, nor when iTunes is gonna release it. *sadface*

Florence is becoming well-known in the states. I think it strongly depends on where in the US you happen to live, because she’s definitely more popular in some areas than others. And her album comes out November 1st here.

The biggest problem is that after her VMA performance pop programmers didn’t jump on the song and throw it into rotation on top 40 stations (just like smart programmers failed to do the same for Beyonce’s “Love On Top” and proves that music directors don’t break new music anymore). “Dog Days Are Over” became ubiquitious in commercials for movies, but never became an actual true top 40 hit. And Florence is slowing building in popularity, but if you’ve been lucky enough to catch the live show, you know she’s a star. I don’t think “Shake It Out” is as ear catching as “Dog Days” was, but it was worlds better than that dreadful “What The Water Gave Me” which I honestly hope is just like a bonus track. And yes, “Ceremonials” is indeed slated for Nov. 1st.

I am totally falling in love with them! Can’t get to get Cereminials!

Beautiful, epic, amazing. It’s her best video, and definitely the most visually interesting video I’ve seen in a long time. She’s really matured a great deal since “Lungs”, and it’s a beautiful progression. Also, her description of it as a “psychedelic 1920s dress party with a demonic twist” was quite accurate!

An artist whose possibility of a sophomore slump is next to nothing because she makes music for herself and for the fans. Not to make money or break records, she is naturally maturing with her sound and look while also retaining what made so many fall in love with her during Lungs. Love this song and video!

I’ve heard most of the tracks on this album and it sounds just as fabulous as “Lungs”. Her music is so haunting and infectious. I’m not sure how I feel about that music video, though. It reminds me of one of those freaky, dramatic videos from the 80s. Love the song, though.
