Kelly Clarkson dropped a new single on her official website today, a straightforward pop anthem called “What Doesn’t Kill You (Stronger).”
The tune, which may or may not be the title track of Clarkson’s upcoming October 24 album—iTunes simply calls the song “Stronger,” but her website uses the longer title—falls right into the American Idol‘s belty pop/rock wheelhouse, and it should please fans who love that sound.
Personally, I’m more partial to the understated, sassy-but-soulful vibes on current lead single “Mr. Know It All,” but there’s chatter around the EW Music Dept. that Clarkson might have been better off releasing “What Doesn’t Kill You” as the first track from Stronger.
Take a listen below and decide for yourself.
What do you think, Music Mixers? Is this a stronger song than “Mr. Know It All”?

Love.
the production makes it sound like a demo. I don’t need to hear Kelly’s voice as though it were 2 inches inside my ear—please do something a little more creative next time, Mr. Mixer.
another swing and a miss in less than two weeks
Not bad, she’s still the only Idol contestant that matters all these years later.
You’re forgetting about Carrie Underwood. She’s sold millions of albums and won tons of major awards. She’s a huge success.
Yeah, she and Carrie are the only two I listen to consistently every time they come out with new albums. The only two. But saying that, I really like both of them, so if for no other reason, at least Idol existed to bring us the two of them! (Oh, and in the Kelly/Carrie competition, I have to give the edge to Kelly. But I love them both). Can’t wait for this new album!
Wow! Love it!!!
x 2! Love her.
what’s with the machines? can’t they afford a band? cliched corporate pop.
that requires talent I guess
If this is being released today via her website that means “Mr Know It All” isn’t performing as well as the label had hoped. We’ll have a better idea tom. when the new Hot 100 is released. This is track good, but I still like “Let Me Down” the most and hope thats a single.
Well, that may be the real reason, but her excuse was that she said there were a bunch of leaked versions out there and she wanted people to hear the real version.
Know It All should have been titled, No it aint.
I agree, Let Me Down is the best one of her new songs I’ve heard. I actually figured it would be the first single. This song is good too, definitely better then Mr. Know It All.
I agree let me down should have been her first release
This tune is much better than Mr. Know It All – it’s not even close. The record company dropped the ball.
Anything would be an improvement
this would have been a bigger hit than mr. know it all as a lead single. i can already hear it playing in the background of romcom trailers next to anything by pink and new republic.
She said in an interview that this was a contender for first single, but they took a chance on Know It All because they wanted to do something different. Hope this is it. It sounds like one, and she deserves it.
*Hope this is a hit.
you forget the letter ‘s’
I just heard Kelly’s latest song “What Doesn’t Kil You” and I couldn’t stop jumping to the song. I LOve it. I lOve “Mr. Know It All” too. 2 completely different songs but Kelly can do no wrong. She’s awesome and I’ve already pre-ordered “Stronger” from her website.
Love this song
This song is way better than her first single.
you mean the one she released only two weeks ago?
It was released August 30. That was hardly 2 weeks ago. And this hasnt been sent to radio. Its just on her website.
Mr. Know It All is a pretty decent song and it’s a million times better than half of the crap that is on the radio now.
I can stand that song. It is so boring.
I agree Carly.
I love Mr. Know It All, but this should have been the first single… much more radio friendly. This album is going to be amazing!!! I can’t wait.
mr. know it all is plenty of a radio friendly song.
Agreed, it is radio friendly. My comment indicates that I think What Doesn’t Kill You is simply more radio friendly. Doesn’t mean Mr. Know It All isn’t awesome, because it is.
like this one better
Not much better though.
Who do you listen to Laura?
Ke$ha? Black Eyed Peas? Britney Spears? LMFAO?
At the very least, appreciate the girl’s immense talent, especially since it exceeds EVERYONE else on top 40 radio right now
Still remember when she won Idol–bought her winning song then and think she’s just a great, down-to-earth girl.
Like this way better than Mr. Know It All.
