Adele, Lady Gaga lead American Music Awards nominations

Much like the MTV Video Music Awards, the actual statuettes handed out at the American Music Awards are almost entirely beside the point.

While nobody can ever really recall who won awards seconds after they are handed out, the AMAs always provide a tremendous TV broadcast, full of performances from artists plugging high-profile fall albums. In the past few years, they have really upped the ante on the on-stage components of the show, which have made it a can’t-miss for pop music enthusiasts.

Of course, they’re still going to hand out awards too, and the usual suspects dominate the list of nominations, which just came out today: Adele, Lady Gaga, and Taylor Swift lead the nominations, with Rihanna, Lil Wayne, and Beyoncé all picking up multiple noms themselves.

There are a handful of interesting head-to-heads going on in the nominations, too, as former Destiny’s Child members Kelly Rowland and Beyoncé will compete for Soul/R&B Favorite Female Artist, and former lovers Rihanna and Chris Brown square off for Soul/R&B Album.

Hopefully Adele’s vocals cords are well rested at that point, so she can perform as well as collect the 4 trophies for which she is nominated. She will win every award she is nominated for, without a doubt. Hilarious that Beyonce is up against Kelly in the R&B Soul Feamle category, since this is ironically the year Kelly SHOULD beat out Beyonce. haha

    • jasper

      Aren’t these fan voted now?

      If so…..who cares?

      • Matt

The AMAs have always been fan-voted. Not sure how they do it now, but it used to be they would take the top 3 artists in each year-end category from Cashbox Magazine and then conduct a Gallup Poll to determine the winners. Of course, this was when the show aired in January, after the year-end charts were released and just weeks before the Grammys.

    • 4120

I’m pretty sure these things are fan voted. So you can expect Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga/Katy Perry to win here. Adele will get Grammy awards.

      • Phil

Actually this particular awards, started by Dick Clark, is infamous for giving the awards out to whoever shows up/performs on the show, so….kinda ironic they announce the nominees, but no date for the ceremony/show? Or is Kyle just being extremely lazy and leaving that out of the article?

      • Fithri

Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga will also get Grammy awards.

      • PN

Adele got four nominations for the AMAs, but I’m looking forward to what nominations she’ll get at the Grammys! She’s going to get floods of nominations, might get several iin the pop category. The Grammy people will gloat and brag about her album more than the others this year.

  • Sebastion

Just bc Kelly had a #1 on the R&B charts does not mean that her album was better than Beyonce’. I think 4 is an underrated album bc it is her best work today. No one can pull off songs like Love On Top or End Of Time. Def the best R&B album of the year.

    • Phil

Its not for album sweetie, its for R&B female, and Kelly had a #1 R&B hit this year “Motivation” for a couple weeks…Beyonce did not, and Rihanna’s “Whats My Name” with Drake wasn’t that big of an R&b hit.

    • Kelcie

Regardless of the mistake you made I agree…. 4 is very underrated and is absolutely her best work so far. Her vocals are incredible! :]

      • JackieB

Now if only she would sing live.

      • Classy!

4 only has about 4 good songs on it. Fitting title.

  • Helena

    GaGa

    • Breauni

      Yesss!!!

  • sv

This is another irrelevant fan-voted show. Gaga will win every category she’s in; the awards mean absolutely nothing. I won’t be tuning in, but I can’t wait to see Adele collect her due at the Grammys.

    • Phil

Yeah I threw up in my mouth earlier when Billboard announced Taylor Swift as their Female Entertainer of the Year. So sad when clearly 2011 will be looked back at as the year Adele SAVED the music indutsry with continual sales.

      • sv

Haha, seriously. I saw that this morning… it honestly made me laugh. 2011 will go down as Adele’s year and Billboard foolish to give this so-called honor to a woman who hasn’t even released an album in ’11.

      • Santana

Yeah, I almost forgot Taylor Swift even existed this year. None of her singles from her new album have been played very much on pop radio, and none have made that big of an impact on the pop charts. It’s definitely Adele’s year.

      • Kimmy Swimmy

Well the reason Taylor is Billboard’s woman of the year is because she’s sold out dozens of stadiums on her Speak Now Tour, if I remember correctly, Adele just cancels all her tour dates

Plus Billboard goes from like Nov 1. to Nov 1. They don’t start their year on Jan 1. So technically, in that time period Speak Now has outsold 21

      • yournightmare

Taylor over Adele any day, every day. Wise choice Billboard! And its woman of the year not entertainer. Taylor does lots more charity work plus her tour was biggest of the year.

    • Cameron J

Wow. This nominee list is pretty much first-results-off-google basis. Good choices for some, bad choices for most. Were they even trying?

  • Lily

Mumford and Sons! I didn’t start listening to them until after the Grammys last year, and now I realize they really deserved some recognition. Their songs are amazing!

  • fancypants

Katy Perry is not adult contemporary and Rihanna is not Soul/R&B. Why are they nominated in those categories? I hope Adele wins all the awards she’s nominated for. She’s definitely the artist of the year.

    • sv

I think it’s HILARIOUS that Rihanna got nominated for both Pop and R&B albums – her album, first off, was generic garbage, and like you said, she’s not even R&B or anywhere near “Soul”. Adele belongs in her spot – she’s the epitome of soul.

      • Phil

Rihanna’s “Loud” was what a contemporary pop album should be, it really wasn’t horrible enough to call garbage. Its what a a pop album should be…fun, catchy, big beats, and maybe one ballad thrown in for good measure. But nominating it in the R&B album category is a definite head scratcher.

      • sv

Maybe garbage was harsh; in regard to the Pop music spectrum, it was suitable. After Good Girl Gone Bad, and to an extent Rated R, I expect more from Rihanna. It worries me that she’s doing these crazy no-break releases. Loud just came out and this year and now she’s doing ANOTHER album, due out on Nov. 21. Loud just came off as impersonal on so many levels – hopefully Talk That Talk (lol) will be a step up.

      • LaStephanie

I like Rihanna, I love Beyonce’, but Adele is AWESOME! She has so much soul!!! If any one thinks any other way, go to YouTube and listen to her sing “Some One Like You” live in her home, simply AMAZING!

      • SaraS

I agree. Rihanna was just nominated because she’s performed at the AMA’s so much in the past. With her too slutty Beyonce-dancin’ performances.
Rihanna’s album is crap, and her voice is worse. I wish she’d go away.

    • Santana

Yeah I have no idea why Katy Perry would be nominated for Adult Contemporary. Very weird. I guess the AMA’s have only been paying attention to the artists in the top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100 this year and aren’t aware that anyone else even exists.

    • A

Right? Katy Perry in Adult Contemporary is ridiculous. Adult contemporary artists are people like Sarah McLachlan, not Katy Perry.

      • PN

But they play Katy on those stations too. I think they like that inspiring song Firework more than the other singles.

  • Breauni

Taylor swift for artist of the year?? U gotta be kidding me the only person she needs to be thanking is kanye west for boosting up her career. And adele is a great singer very talent but she is no gaga.

    • sv

      You’re right – Adele isn’t Gaga, she’s better.

      • tracksone

Except Adele isn’t better. She just happens to have a better album this year. 21 > Born This Way. But go back a few years ago and The Fame > 19. They’re both top notch singers/songwriters, great live performers, and it’s why both have the stats to back it up being on top of the world’s stage.

      • Kelcie

        sv is right.

      • B?

That’s not necessarily true. Really, the difference between Gaga and Adele is the difference between a singer and an artist. Whereas Adele, a singer, well, sings, Gaga, an artist, dances, acts, makes music videos, plays instruments–the whole deal. If you want to focus solely on voice, then Adele is your winner. But if you also want to take in music videos, songwriting, instrumental ability, the whole thing, then I’d say Gaga; she simply has more going for her.

      • sllc7

Adele is clearly not more talented than Gaga. Adele can only sing. Gaga can sing, dance, song write, play the piano, create great music videos. The only reason people think she sings better is because she doesn’t have to sing and dance at the same time like GAGA.

    • yournightmare

Taylor is ten times the artist than any of those other hoes. Nobody can match her critical acclaim/sales/touring package. So gtfo troll.

  • Zach

Please vote for Enrique so I don’t have to see J.Lo rewarded for her subpar judging on Idol. Not a chance I’ll be spared of that, I’m sure.

    • Regina

For real. She has no interest in making music, that album was just one more bullet point for her ‘empire.’

  • Breauni

Haha no. the only thing adele has is a voice gaga has the whole image. I would much rather go see gaga in concert then adele she will keep me entertained not only with her voice but her performance as well..

    • sv

Seeing Adele in concert would be far more rewarding and entertaining than seeing Gaga in concert. She’s intimate with her audience without being outrageous – she doesn’t flat out assume that everyone in attendance is one of her cult monsters. Adele has far more personality than Gaga, too. Pretty much everyone that has seen an Adele interview immediately wants to be her best friend. Want proof? Go watch her Chelsea Lately interview. Gaga is an image; Adele is a person.

      • tracksone

Ok I understand your riding the “Adele bandwagon” but I hope you realize your opinions are just infallible crap right? Sorry but until Adele does something to oust The Monster Ball statistically, you don’t have proof to say she is “better”.

      • tracksone

And this is coming from someone who’s enjoyed Adele just as much as Gaga. They are both extremely rewarding and entertaining live in concert.

      • Kelcie

I love how people have to bring up statistics when a more… manufactured…pop star is pitted against a pop star known for their talent and their voice.

      • sv

@tracksone – I’m sure you know me on a personal level. It’s laughable that on an online forum of all places your argument starts with “oh, I know you’re bandwagoning”. That said, I’ve known and listened to Adele since 19 (I took notice of her after the Tina Fey SNL episode) – so, sorry darling, you’re wrong. It’s okay, though – I posted my bits knowing that you monsters would come out and rage at me. ;)

      • sllc7

Kelice, If their is one pop start that is not manufactured is Lady GAGA. She writes her own songs, partly composes her music, creates her videos, customs, and even the stage were she is going to perform.

      • HoneyB

I hate the term “manufactured” and its implication that the performer isn’t authentic. There are dozens of great performers who don’t write their own works or are producer-driven (i.e., most of Mowtown in the 60s), and that doesn’t cheapen their great performances and singles.

      • tracksone

@sv Awww did I hit a nerve? We’re you not able to continue the context of the arguement? So you had to say “nuh uh im not that” but “you are this” childish mentality? It’s ok we both know you didn’t have an Adele > Gaga arguement in the first place. I was just pointing out your useless opinion is just that, useless. You’ll get over it.

  • Classy!

I cant believe Britney wasnt nominated! She got more critical acclaim and hits than Gaga and Beyonce. Why does the entetsinment world insist on rewarding their mediocrity?? I hope Adele and Rihanna take home everything.

    • Zach

Britney is the definition of mediocrity. She already undeservedly won a VMA. Actually, “I Wanna Go” is catchy and undeniable fun. But that doesn’t make her a top 3 singer over Adele, Gaga, or Katy. Beyonce wasn’t even their category, but on her worst songs she’s a better singer than Britney on her best.

      • Regina

I agree! Britney’s album was waaaaaaaay better than Gagas or Katy’s, and a bit better than Rihanna’s. Femme Fetale may just be a pop album but what a collection of jams it was!

    • fancypants

I completely forgot about Britney Spears. Meh.

      • sllc7

I forgot about Britney too. Her album might be fun, but is very forgettable. Gaga album is clearly the most artistic. It has rock, electro, country, and even mariachi music

      • Classy!

So forgettable that she’s the one with all the hits? Makes no sense. If artistry was the main issue, probay none of these chicks would be nominated.

      • fancypants

When looking at the list of nominees above I completely forgot that Britney even had an album this year and that she could’ve been nominated. The singers nominated this year have more #1 hits than her anyway.

      • Classy!

Most of them do not have more number one hits than Britney-wtf are u talking about? Every one of Beyonce’s singles have done poorly. I dont see how the hell she’s nominated.

    • PN

I thought about Britney Spears too!!!!!! I thought she would get a nomination, but I think that she put her album out so early in the year that they didn’t consider her when their minds were on the Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and RIhanna hits. And Adele came a month before hers and has been a huge seller since. Britney had a good dance pop album too and it’s had 3 top 10 hits. A good album all the way through and it didn’t get nominated for pop album? I guess it’s difficult to get 4 or 5 of them in one category given the strong qualities of the albums and music. But I think Britney understands and that she’s supportive of the other singers.

  • Breauni

Brittney spears is a good studio singer but she cant really sing with all that auto tune and things every nominated can actually sing (besides taylor swift) & I think gaga had the best album but hey thats just my opinon.. And as for adele yea u would probably wanna go see her gaga cause u are probably laidback and boring but if u want REAL.ENTERTAINMENT go see gaga for sumthin more carefree spontaneous and fun! We could go at this all day but im still gonna say gaga is better. Adele puts me to sleep gaga makes me believe in my self when no one else does.

    • Santana

I think both Gaga and Adele’s live performances are interesting, but I think the comparisons of the performances are unfair. Gaga goes for the over the top show and is really entertaining in that, Adele goes for the more personal, emotional performances. They are both good, but they are pretty different.

      • B?

I agree; you can’t really say who’s “better”, they just take different approaches to how they entertain.

    • A

Kind of sad that the only person who makes you believe in yourself is Lady Gaga. You need to find some inspirational people in your own life instead of skanky celebrities.

    • A

Also sad that you find Adele so boring when her talent trumps Gaga’s on any day of the week. Just because she doesn’t dance around on stage wearing next to nothing while performing onstage antics just to grab headlines doesn’t make Adele boring.

  • HoneyB

How is Rihanna’s Loud album up for both pop/rock and R&B? What’s R&B about Rihanna at all?

    • Kelcie

….She’s black….. Seriously. They do the same thing with Usher as of late…

      • Lily

“What’s my Name” and “Man Down” were both urban records that received major airplay at Black-owned urban radio stations.

      • Phil

1 or 2 songs does NOT an album make. And Urban stations do not have to be black owned. Clear Channel owns a slew of Urban stations.

    • TONY

I hate when they do that, the rules should prohibit it. One or the other, not both. Whichever category she got the most votes in, should determine the placement. Then in the other category, the fourth place finisher becomes the third nominee. Easy peezy, lemon squeezy.

    • PN

Even though her sound is mostly pop and dance numbers, she does have a few urban songs in the middle or back sections of the albums, namely some sleek ballads. She has Ne-Yo, Christopher Stewart Shaffer Smith do those songs for her.

  • bdg

Check out female pop group Breaking Day

  • Irwin

Should be a lock for ’21′ – and its singer! What’s up with ‘Loud’! I though that’s not coming out till next month? Looking far and wide for competition for The Album!!

  • Cindy

    Who nominated for Best Artist?
