Despite a five-year break from the music scene and some major personnel changes, goth rockers Evanescence returned to the top of the Billboard 200 chart today with their self-titled third album, which sold 127,000 copies in its first week.
Though that number is far less than Evanescence’s last album, The Open Door, which debuted at No. 1 in 2006 with 447,000 copies sold, it is impressive that the Amy Lee-led band managed to move that many discs without a smash single like “My Immortal” or “Bring Me To Life.” Their current single, “What You Want” sits at number 13 on the Rock Songs chart.
Another rock band enjoyed a strong debut this week: L.A.’s Five Finger Death Punch started off at No. 3 (behind the indomitable Adele, whose 21 is STILL holding strong at No. 2) with 91,000 copies of their album, American Capitalist, sold. That’s a big jump from their 2009 record, War Is the Answer, which debuted at No. 7 with 44,000.
Last week’s chart champ, Scotty McCreery’s Clear As Day, slipped down into fourth place after a 55 percent drop to 88,000, giving him a two-week total of 285,000. Meanwhile, his runner-up, Lauren Alaina, got off to a pretty good start herself with 69,000 copies of her disc Wildflower sold in its debut week.
Ryan Adams’ Ashes and Fire and Martina McBride’s Eleven debuted with 49,000 and 40,000, respectively. Joe Jonas wasn’t as lucky. Without his brothers beside him, the “Just In Love” singer started at No. 15 with only 18,000 copies. Check out the top ten below:
1. Evanescence, Evanescence – 127,000 copies
2. Adele, 21 – 111,000
3. Five Finger Death Punch, American Capitalist – 91,000
4. Scotty McCreery, Clear As Day – 88,000
5. Lauren Alaina, Wildflower – 69,000
6. Tony Bennett, Duets II – 54,000
7. Ryan Adams, Ashes and Fire – 49,000
8. Lady Antebellum, Own The Night – 47,000
9. Lil Wayne, Tha Carter IV – 45,000
10. Martina McBride, Eleven – 40,000

Wow, i Didnt even know their album came out last week..
I beez liking n missing dem. Glad dey back!
I am sad that I wasted time reading your comment, and am now dumber after trying to decipher to awful grammar/attention-seeking language.
Haha u can always ignore dopey boy or do u always belittle ppl as YOUR form of attention seeking behavior? Idiot.
They didn’t put it out much, She better get use to being a star, because she has major talent with them boys.
Let’s try to make next year an American Idoless, Taylor Not So Swift, Britney Spearless, year and put some talent back on the charts again like before the millenium! What do you guys say?
Thank the miserable gods for this new and latest top number one alternative album. I’m going to get a tattoo of the album sleeve, and catch the blood in a small vile to hang around my neck. Now I can be depressed even more. I’m so excited.
LOL, This comment wins.
you are a complete dumb ass, the Album has a lot of positive and rocking songs. sorry if you can’t handle a kick ass album. enjoy some more Britney dance tunes.
Me neither… Ive also never head of a band called Five Finger Death Punch. I’ll probably buy their album because of the possible Kill Bill reference, though.

tak opinia zawsze będzie subiektywna, tym bardziej gdy się bardzo lubi danego artystę, a ja za Evanescence i Amy Lee wprost przepadam
I predict Kelly Clarkson will top the charts soon.
I hope so! Can’t wait to buy that album.
As much as I would like that, I doubt it since Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto arrives next week.
Put ur artist on a diet, loser!
And Florence’s new album the week after that!
Coldplay is just too happy for me.
Kelly is good, Amy is art, there is a hugh difference, it is like she is doing somekind of rock opera. Wonderful Group.
Well, duh!
Oh, Kelly will have a strong first week of sales with her album. I’m excited to hear it!
NO. 1 Love their new album, glad to hear it is on top.
Glad that Evanescence is making waves again, but the third album is kinda tepid. I hope the original band gets back together somehow.
Tepid, hello it rocks. Tepid is Adele but I like her also, there is nothing tepid about Amy Lee and the band.
TC, you keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Celeste,Our shucdele is going up over the next couple of days. You’ll see it take shape on the . Thank you for including us!
So much talent from AI season 10, yet we ended up with the worst top two in the history of the show. Every other season had at least one good artist in the top two, but this year we got two completely generic, uninteresting singers. Ugh. What a waste.
Your taste must be all in your mouth.
Good one. Enjoy your Country Bumpkin Idols.
I like Scotty, and while I’m not too crazy about Lauren, she does sound like Carrie Underwood sometimes–her tone is a little close to Carrie’s but not too much. I think she’s putting it out while Carrie is taking the year off and recording her album. I don’t think they’re the best top 2, but they’re both good in their own personal vocal styles of country.
Can you believe it? The great Tony Bennett is still in the Top 10 after debuting at No. 1. Wonderful.
I want sad songs that match my dead girl look I’ve got going here. It took me years and years of researching and hanging around in back alleyways to get this just right.
Tony Bennett’s been in that top 10 for a month! I think that the superstar names he’s dueting on the album is helping its sales the most! I like that he’s continuing to sell well with his Duets II album!
It’s quite a feat. I may go see them, I saw them when they debuted with that smashing cd last time.
Kelly Clarkson’s song, ‘Mr. Know It All,’ is really good.
Wow that must be some really good drugs they have you on.
Great to hear Amy Lee again. There are some very good songs on that album. The Country Idol Twins will drop fast unless they get good radio play. Their current sales are entirely from show watchers. They are doing much better than the top two from last year, which means the producers did a good job of saving the show. Looking forward to some exciting albums releases this fall.
“Despite a five-year break”
You forgot 80% personnel change
Added! Thanks
It’s a very good CD. I downloaded it on iTunes, and I think fans of their first two discs will be pleased with these songs as well. I’m happy for them that they debuted at No. 1 again.
I don’t like Joe Jonas but I actually feel sorry for the kid. What disappointment he must feel to have millions of twitter followers and only 18000 bothered to buy his crappy album. That must suck.
Oh man, lol, that is just embarrassing. Poor kid. Someone needs to tell him he’s not Justin Timberlake.
I would take it as a complement.
I coicenve this web site contains some real good information for everyone. “In this world second thoughts, it seems, are best.” by Euripides.
Wow, really? I moved 16,000 units of my CDs that I burned myself out of the trunk of my car. I think i’ll surpass Joe Jonas by the end of the month! In yo face Jonas Brotha! Cypha out!
But this is his solo album. It’s completely opposite to the clean cut pop he did with his brothers. It’s very much a pop/R&B patchwork album. I’m listening it to it now–like 8 of the 12 songs from it! I wanted it to sell as well as Evanescence since people know him from the Jonas Brothers. But only 18,000? I expected more too.
18,000 copies for someone as well knows as Joe Jonas is an epic failure. Don’t try and sugarcoat it by saying “well it’s his solo album and different to what he did before.” Doesn’t matter. He’s a well-known celebrity and his album has been promoted well. It flopped big time.
*as well known as…*
What a pleasant surprise. Amy Lee has a great voice and although I no longer call myself a fan, I still respect her work. Plus I’m a closeted Goth.
Evanescence WHO? The real story is that the ‘Someone Like …’ album has just sold 4M units in the US alone – in only 8 months. 35 weeks in the top 5! And T-Swift wins Billboard woman of year? No justice!
There’s more than album sales that go into being “woman of the year”. Whether you like it or not, she has one of the hottest tours of the year and its getting rave reviews. I’m not really a fan, but went with my daughter and was impressed.
Billboard’s about record sales. I got nothing against Taylor, but this is Adele’s year by a mile.
Irwin, if you read the Billboard article on why they chose Taylor, you would see that their decision was not just based off of album sales. I like Adele, but she didn’t do sh*t this yr other than selling albums.
How about the biggest selling single of the year, and another #1 now for 4 weeks! Tours have nothing to do with Billboard! They can say what they want, like bringing up 3 or 5 year old albums, but it makes no sense! Even ’19′ from 3 years old is selling better than that wonderful ‘Speak Now’ album. So give me one reason Taylor should get the award. I think Katy or Gaga had better years too!
im so glad Evanescence’s debut at number 1, i love them.
I don’t. They have done anything good in 8 years almost.
and you have done nothing.
What happened to Carly smithson? I googled it but can’t figure out when she parted ways with evanescence
She was never in Evanescence. She was in a band called We Are The Fallen with some (or all, I’m not sure) of the guys from Evanescence that left the band.
SMH
Calry Smithinson is in a band called We Are the Fallen that is formed by FORMER Evanescence members. They also just got dropped from their lable due to lack of sales for their debut last year.
Also, I’m so happy for the #1 debut, it’s about time we see rock music back in the top spot. Sorry the adele’s and gaga’s.
I think evanescence is great I’m glad she made it to 5th place it is better than nothing but doesn’t mean for you you to talk smack about adele she is a great singer to so don’t be jealous.
