Adele cancels all live dates and promotional appearances for rest of year

Adele

Adele announced today that she is canceling all of her live dates and promotional appearances for the rest of the year. This news comes three weeks after the British singer canceled her sold-out U.S. tour because of a hemorrhage on her vocal chords.

Adele was due to play six U.K. dates next month but, according to an announcement on her website, the singer’s continuing problems with her throat have forced her to bow out of all her commitments until she recovers from an upcoming throat surgery, but that “a full recovery is expected.”

While the singer’s live appearances may be on hold, her album 21 continues to dominate the Billboard 200. The collection is currently enjoying its 13th week at number one. No album has spent more weeks in that position since 1998′s Titanic soundtrack.

Take care of yourself girlfriend. Plus you can sit back and watch us enjoy your music (and I plan to get concert DVD) without pointless stupid tricks to generate more PR. Finally someone’s music has center stage!!!!

    • BFD

The right thing to do. If you don’t have your health, you have nothing.

      • abadstroller

Sounds like a quote from “The Princess Bride” (Prince Humperdinck, Humperdinck, Humperdinck)!

      • wtm

It’s true. And it’s no joke.

    • lisa g.

How can she watch “us” enjoy her music? Is she coming over tonight?

      • Todd

She’s welcome to come over, anytime.

  • Nathan

Tough break for her, as long as her chords work well enough to say thank you when she sweeps the Grammys next year.

    • B more Girl

The Grammys are so watered down down (I forgot what show gave Rhianna a R&B award…NOT!) I’m glad Adele has the sales records to prove we appreciate her music. I’m so glad my daughter shocked me with her CD a few weeks ago so as the youngun said on Billboard “It’s the ole folks (who love GREAT music) who don’t know how to downlaod or pirate keeping her selling through the roof!” how cute hahahaha

  • Marcus

Winehouse had a similar problem with her throat, she couldn’t stop dumping whiskey down it.

    • Chris

      Fail.

      • JB

        +1.

      • Whelan

        Make it “2″.

    • Theo Huxtable

Oh Amy Crackhouse, you are not missed at all.

      • Ben

Actually, she is – and you a moron.

      • Irwin

Thank you, Ben. A tasteless moron at that!

  • Mark

Isn’t it funny how most of her offcial pictures manage to obscure her neck, to give the illusion that she’s not full-figured? I know that all promotional pics are doctored, but I HATE when artist who happen NOT to be a size 2 are always styled to make them look skinnier. How about embracing their curves? Why can’t she simply say, “Screw it! This time I will not have a wind-blown mane or a high collar or a scarf hide my neck!” “What’s wrong with a double chin, darnit?”

    • Kimberly

Actually she said this to Rolling Stone:

While she has no problem with other artists showing off their style or physique, you won’t find the “Rolling in the Deep” songstress stripping down anytime soon.

“I love seeing Lady Gaga’s boobs and bum. I love seeing Katy Perry’s boobs and bum. Love it,” Adele says. “But that’s not what my music is about. I don’t make music for eyes. I make music for ears.”

Besides, she says, focusing on her looks or fluctuating weight isn’t really her thing, anyway.

“My life is full of drama and I won’t have time to worry about something as petty as what I look like,” the 22-year-old tells Rolling Stone. “I don’t like going to the gym. I like eating fine foods and drinking nice wine. Even if I had a really good figure, I don’t think I’d get my [T&A] out for no one.”

    • jmo

I noticed that too. I think she’s goregous just the way she is. I think the label’s marketing group just doesn’t know how to handle a full figured -especially female- artists. I mean, both “Chasing Pavements” and… (I think) “All Your Love” she was filmed in a dark room and in a car. “Rollin in the Deep” was better but WTF? 1/3 of the US population is overweight, don’t know about the UK but it’s infuriating. I guess it’s better than Missy Elliot in a black Glad bag but still. Anyway, Adele has a beautiful voice, face, and body. Hope she gets better so we get many, many more albums in the future.

      • Ace

This. She is a *beautiful* woman with a beautiful voice. She has said in interviews that she likes her shape; I’m not sure why managers/photographers/whoever feel the need to hide it.

  • Laurie

Sad she has had to cancel, but hopefully she will be able to get these issues with her voice under control. Love her! Hopefully with all this time off she will have time to write some great new songs. I am already looking forward to “23″.

  • GRD

She cancelled her tour because it was originally booked in small venues. She’ll win some Grammys, book bigger venues, and make LOTS more money.

    • Jim

Actually, she will win Grammys but she does not want to ever do large venues. She prefers doing smaller ones so she has more immediate contact with audiences. And…she SHOULD make lots more money….

    • Celimene

No, GRD. She suffers from debilitating stage fright and prefers intimate venues. That’s why she books the smaller spaces.

    • PN

I think she’s comfortable singing in smaller venues. It allows her music to have that intimate feel and connection to the audience. I don’t think she wants to do arenas or stadiums at this moment, but she could do well in that area.

  • UGH

Fat cow. Sure, she’s a great singer, but why can’t she lose weight? She’s gorgeous! She needs to hit the gym.

    • B more Girl

Well you said all I care about…she’s a GREAT SINGER!!!! I noticed she does take great pics as well.

      • @Bmore girl

She takes great pics, but….Isn’t it funny how most of her offcial pictures manage to obscure her neck, to give the illusion that she’s not full-figured? • acaseofgeo

        She is so overrated!

      • Acaseofgeo

Oh wow. An imposter. Why does EW allow this? I think Adele and her album 21 are AWESOME. (I even have my e-mail attached to my comments so I’m not sure why YOU are allowed to impost me.)

    • Kay Smythe

Just becuase she is full figured .. doesn’t mean she is a fat cow or needs to loss weight. as long as she is in good health and secure within herself she doesnt need to lose any weight for you, to gain popularity or sell records. Her voice is AMAZING and she is very talented and that shines through.

    • Tarc

So well said by a dimwitted ignoramus.

    • abadstroller

Wow, UGH, you’re nice (NOT). Why so mean, wee little troll?

  • Shannon

It’s disappointing, but a smart decision. The woman us only freakin 21, for goodness sakes. She needs to take care of her voice, herself, and get some constructive help for her pre-show anxiety, while she’s at it.

    • abadstroller

Glad to hear that Adele is looking out for her voice. She has incredible pipes. It’s still early on in her career that it would be shortsighted to blow-out her vocal cords just so that she can meet these concert dates. In 1997, after working her voice too hard, Julie Andrews had vocal cord polyps removed during a botched surgery–forever altering her crystalline 5-octave range voice. We want Adele to take care of herself and her unique soulful sound so that we can listen to her for years to come!

    • fancypants

      Adele is 23.

  • sil

ugh @UGH.. what does it matter if she is overweight or skinny? she has more talent than most of the skinny hookers out there now. she can out sing any of these other “artists.” and her record sales prove it. she is a beautiful woman and so long as she is healthy that is all that matter.

    • B more Girl

I was trying to be diplomatic hahaha didn’t want to trash the mindless sexed up gyrating pop tarts whose PR teams are trying to figure out how to out sell (or at least catch up) Adele the “fat cow” hahahahaha Sil you have to learn how to spot JEALOUSY!!!!

    • abadstroller

      Preach.

  • Michael

I hope Adele gets better. She should rest her voice, and not let the pressure get the better of her.

    • ozak

How do I report cuintnoal unwanted solicitation calls from one or more sources. I already subscribe to the Do Not Call program, but that doesn’t stop some callers. Please advise.Larry Espinoza(623) 566-0266email:

Maybe she will take this as a sign to stop smoking!

    • @Bmore girl

…and hit the treadmill. She’s too young to be this fat.

    • Tracey

She did stop back in February.

      • Ace

That’s good news! I’m sure her recovery will be a lot easier now that she’s stopped adding to the damage. Hemorrhaging vocal cords sounds outrageously painful.

      • Jeff C.

Well if she did quit then good for her, but years of cigarette smoking does have lingering effects and most likely is complicating this whole ordeal.

    • Bamamama

She already did quit smoking – if you see her 5 questions from USA Today on youtube.

    • dee

No. she quit in feburary but start smoking again.. after two months.

  • jpratm

Hoping for full recovery – Just bought a copy of 21 for a friend sweet album. Grammy time she will be on stage that will be her comeback .

  • Jdean

Seriously, this woman has to have cancelled close to 100 shows. I love her, but I’m really beginning to think she has a secret drug problem or something.

    • Ace

Her voice is literally bleeding. Disappointing as it is for those of us who want to listen to her, I think that’s a legitimate reason to hold off on the singing for a little while.

  • Jeff C.

She should probably quit cigarettes then…

    • LOL

And she should try a salad.

  • Templar

She should smoke cause she fat!

    • Cas

Way to have your priorities in line, Templar.

      • abadstroller

Temper, temper, Templar. And you’re so incredibly gifted and beyond reproach HOW?
