Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, and Ne-Yo all performed at the controversy-plagued Michael Jackson tribute concert “Michael Forever” earlier today, according to the AP. Jackson’s three children — Paris, 13, Prince, 14, and Michael Joseph Jr., 9 — also appeared onstage to address the audience at the show, which took place in Cardiff, Wales.

Ne-Yo started the concert with a performance of “Billie Jean;” Jackson’s brothers Marlon, Tito, and Jackie tackled the Jackson 5 hit “Blame It On the Boogie” with British boy band JLS; and Christina Aguilera sang “Smile.” Meanwhile, Beyonce performed “I Wanna Be Where You Are” via satellite. The Jackson children returned to the stage for the finale, “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough.”

“Michael Forever” had attracted criticism for a variety of reasons, including the fact that it was set to coincide with the manslaughter trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, who is accused of contributing to  Jackson’s death. Several of Jackson’s other siblings, including Janet, declined to take part in the concert and last week the Black Eyed Peas withdrew from the show, citing “unavoidable circumstances.”

Russell Brand inspires psychedelic road trip in new Noel Gallagher video: Watch it here!

If there was a prize for Comeback of the Year at the Grammys, this year’s award would almost certainly go to former Oasis cornerstone Noel Gallagher. His forthcoming album High Flying Birds is full of the sort of ambling melodies and crisp songwriting that got lost in the wash some time around Be Here Now, representing a welcome return of one of the most inspired songwriters of the ’90s.

Gallagher just released the second single from High Flying Birds. It’s called “AKA … What a Life!” and features a music video that picks up where the clip for “The Death of You and Me” (the album’s first single) left off. Also, it stars Russell Brand as a sort of gypsy/wizard/lion tamer sort of guy. It’s a wildly entertaining eight minute head trip — the perfect antidote to a Friday afternoon. Watch the clip below. Idris Elba: What's On My iPod

Of all the great television actors currently working, Idris Elba may have the best track record playing intense, on-the-edge characters. Obviously, he tapped into that with his turn as Stringer Bell on The Wire, but even his arc on The Office was vaguely terrifying. On Luther, currently in the midst of its second season on BBC America, Elba channels all of his fierceness and finally gets to use his own accent in his role as the ultimate detective on the edge, haunted by his past and constantly staring evil and violence directly in the face.

As his iPod reveals, Elba isn’t all-aggro-all-the-time. In fact, he has a deep weak spot for David Bowie and likes to unwind with Mumford & Sons. In a recent conversation with EW, Elba shared those revelations as well as some other tunes currently taking up residence in his headspace.

Wretch 32, Black and White
“He’s a rapper from U.K. and he’s been around for a while on the underground circuit for a long time. His lyrics are just poetry. There’s some grimy sort of street hip-hop stuff and there’s a bit of pop stuff, but at the heart of all this is his lyrics, and they’re quite poetic. Quite observational. He has a couple of jams on there, like ‘Traktor,’ which is a bit more of a club vibe and he has another song called ‘Don’t Go’ that went to number one in the U.K. U.K. hip-hop doesn’t really transfer across the world. I think partly to do with the fact that the words are so London or so regional that you might have to listen to it a few times to get into it. But I think that U.K. hip-hop has a real strong presence and it’s coming up slowly, with Tinie Tempah and some other guys starting to break out a little bit.”

“He’s an acoustic artist. He sings and plays guitar and kind of sings like a rapper. He’s dope. Another very poetic storyteller. I actually had the opportunity to meet him once and he’s a really young, unassuming cat. He doesn’t look like a pop star. You wouldn’t think he could do what he does, but his music speaks to me.” READ FULL STORY »

Nirvana, U2, Pearl Jam, and Metallica may have ruled 1991, but Tom Petty stood above them all

Petty-Wide-Open_320.jpg

Much has been made of the greatness that was the fall of 1991 in the music world. Over the span of a few short months, some of the most seminal albums ever created were shipped to record stores (back when shipping physical copies of things to record stores was a thing that happened). Some of these releases are getting boldfaced reissues, like Nirvana’s Nevermind and U2′s Achtung Baby. But there are plenty of others that simply stand the test of time, like Metallica’s Metallica, Pearl Jam’s Ten, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Matthew Sweet’s Girlfriend, and Soundgarden’s Badmotorfinger. And 1991 wasn’t all rock albums, either, as A Tribe Called Quest dropped The Low End Theory, Tupac made his solo debut with 2Pacalypse Now, Ice Cube wrote Death Certificate, and Michael Jackson became Dangerous.

All of these albums are great accomplishments in their own right, and they all hold up surprisingly well. Having recently sat down with the men responsible for Nevermind and also having written a book that centers around alternative rock’s rise in ’91, it’s not a mystery that Nirvana’s second album stands above and beyond the rest of them as my favorite album from that year.

However, that was not actually true in 1991. The big joke that came up while I was writing my book was that I didn’t know who Kurt Cobain was until the day I heard the news of his suicide. That’s completely true, as I don’t think I heard Nevermind until 1995, which was after I had already heard In Utero first. I was 13 years old then, and just beginning to be able to fully ingest popular music and process what rock really meant (unsurprisingly, that was the same year my friend Zack turned me on to punk rock, mostly via the Ramones).

In ’91, I was only nine years old, and though I was interested in listening to music, my tastes didn’t really have any definition. Like most kids that age, I was really into “Weird Al” Yankovic. I spent most of the early part of ’91 memorizing the lyrics to “Ice Ice Baby” and missing the double-meaning in Warrant’s “Cherry Pie.” I thought “Do the Bartman” rocked, and a friend of mine played me Guns N’ Roses’ “Get in the Ring,” which I thought was amazing because it had so much cursing in it. Basically, I approved of things that floated into my transom, but I never really made the next step into fandom, or even going as far as buying a cassette.

That changed in the summer of that year, when I was at a friend’s house. His older brother was watching MTV, and I became completely transfixed by the video for “Into the Great Wide Open,” which is why Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers’ Into the Great Wide Open became my favorite album of that year. Beyonce's flashy, colorful 'Countdown' video: Watch it here!

Categories: Beyonce, Music Videos, Pop

Beyoncé may be pregnant with her first child, but she’s not going to let that slow her pop career down.

Queen B has just released the music video for her latest single “Countdown,” the funky jam that we all kinda wish had been the lead single off of 4, rather than “Run the World (Girls),” and it’s a twitchy, energetic, but slightly disjointed affair.

The video—which, judging by the distinct lack of a baby bump in some shots (though we do get a few glimpses), must have been shot at least partly before the VMAs—is a typical Beyoncé dance-fest featuring frenetic movement, flashing colors, and a whole lot of sexy outfits. (The video also features some serious bangs in some scenes yet no bangs in others, which  further solidifies the fact that I have no idea how women’s hair works.)

Justin Bieber premieres new Christmas track 'Mistletoe' in concert: Hear it here!

Oh baby, indeed.

At his concert last night, Justin Bieber performed his brand-new song “Mistletoe,” announcing, “This is the very first time anywhere in the world that I’ve sang this. So this is special. This is just for you.” Cue the screams.

The song is from his forthcoming Christmas album Under the Mistletoe, coming out (mark your calendars!) November 1. Of course, the Biebs can sing whatever he wants on his Christmas album–it’s going to be a huge hit. “Mistletoe,” a totally unnecessary addition to the Christmas music canon, is classic Bieber in his element. He just wants a little alone time with his lady. Bieber is just looking for somebody to love, just as long as there’s Yuletide cheer in the vicinity.

John Wesley Harding invites comedian Eugene Mirman along for Paul Simon tribute video 'Sing Your Own Song': Watch here - EXCLUSIVE

Self-professed “gangsta folk” singer John Wesley Harding has always had a sharp sense of humor, so when it came time to produce a video for the single, “Sing Your Own Song,” in advance of his new album, The Sound of His Own Voice, he invited a comedian along for the ride.

“Sing Your Own Song” co-stars comic Eugene Mirman, who is best known as the voice of Gene on Bob’s Burgers. The clip is an homage to Paul Simon’s classic video for “You Can Call Me Al,” which featured Chevy Chase playing the role that Mirman takes over here. It’s a quirky, funny clip that accompanies a sweet song, and you can check out the exclusive premiere below. READ FULL STORY »
