Willow Smith teams up with Nicki Minaj for 'Fireball': Listen here!

Remember Willow Smith? Daughter of that guy from Wild Wild West and the singer from Wicked Wisdom? Of hair-whipping fame? After dropping her well-received first single “Whip My Hair,” Smith didn’t do anything for a while, probably because she had to prepare for a science fair or something. Then she unveiled “21st Century Girl,” which didn’t have the same kind of pop as “Whip My Hair” and didn’t receive nearly the attention of her first single. Was her journey to stardom over before it really got started?

Perhaps not. Yesterday, Smith’s third single made its way onto the radio. It’s called “Fireball,” and it’s a duet with Nicki Minaj, who certainly seems like an inspiration to Smith (at least in the hair department). Give it a spin below. READ FULL STORY »

Mos Def and Talib Kweli premiere new Black Star song on 'The Colbert Report': Watch here!

Back in 1998, a pair of then relatively unknown rappers released Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, one of the most beloved hip-hop albums of that decade. Though both Mos and Kweli have had a great deal of individual success since then, neither has been able to capture the post-Native Tongues majesty of their collaboration.

Luckily, they’ve decided to dust off Black Star, and spent the summer re-creating their stellar debut as part of the Rock the Bells Tour. The pair returned to television on last night’s episode of The Colbert Report. Kweli and Def (who is now known as Yasiin Bey, which is something we’re just going to have to get used to) chatted with the host, admitting they don’t really understand the term “underground rap.” (“Does it mean we never rise above sea level?” joked Bey.) They also debuted a brand new song called “Fix Up,” which captures much of the same intense ’round-the-way energy the duo put forth on their debut.

But the big highlight came in a web-exclusive performance of “Astronomy (8th Light),” one of the cornerstone tracks from Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star. Check it out below. READ FULL STORY »

Faith Hill to stage comeback, debut new single at CMA Awards -- EXCLUSIVE

Faith-Hill

Faith Hill hasn’t officially released a new single since 2007′s “Red Umbrella,” which went to No. 28 on Billboard’s Country Songs chart. But EW has learned exclusively that the country superstar is planning to make her long-awaited comeback by performing a new single, “Come Home,” at this year’s 45th Annual CMA Awards, which will air Nov. 9 on ABC at 8 p.m.

Virtually no details are available about the song, but in February, Hill was quoted as saying that she’d soon be in the studio working on an album of new material. Naturally, she was tight-lipped about what she was recording. “I’m not even prepared to talk about it right now,” she told Billboard at the time. “I’m right in the middle of it, so it’s really hard to describe what it is until I’m done. That’s the honest truth. I’ll be able to tell more, maybe once I come out of the studio in the spring.” READ FULL STORY »

Jani Lane, former Warrant singer, died of alcohol poisoning

Categories: In Memoriam

The Los Angeles County coroner’s office has determined that Jani Lane, the former lead vocalist and songwriter for the 1980s glam metal band Warrant, died of alcohol poisoning. City News Service reported Wednesday that coroner’s Lt. Larry Dietz said the cause of death was acute ethanol intoxication.

Lane, 47, was found dead in August in a motel in Woodland Hills, on the outskirts of Los Angeles.

Born John Kennedy Oswald in Akron, Ohio, Lane left Warrant in 2008. He was later arrested twice for driving under the influence and served time in jail.

Kelly Clarkson debuts new song 'What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger)': Listen here!

Kelly-Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson dropped a new single on her official website today, a straightforward pop anthem called “What Doesn’t Kill You (Stronger).”

The tune, which may or may not be the title track of Clarkson’s upcoming October 24 album—iTunes simply calls the song “Stronger,” but her website uses the longer title—falls right into the American Idol‘s belty pop/rock wheelhouse, and it should please fans who love that sound.

Personally, I’m more partial to the understated, sassy-but-soulful vibes on current lead single “Mr. Know It All,” but there’s chatter around the EW Music Dept. that Clarkson might have been better off releasing “What Doesn’t Kill You” as the first track from Stronger.

Take a listen below and decide for yourself. READ FULL STORY »

Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeff Mangum performs for Occupy Wall Street

Yes, lots of celebrities showed up to support Occupy Wall Street (though not Radiohead, as once rumored). But the shaggiest famous person (and maybe the one with the most heart) showed up last night.

Around 10:00 pm, Jeff Mangum stepped up to the protesters, gave himself a very humble introduction (“I’m Jeff from the band Neutral Milk Hotel”) and proclaimed, “I’m here to serve you. What do you want to hear?”

Leading a giddy sing-along, Mangum played eight songs, beginning with a cover of the Minutemen’s “Themselves” and leading into a bunch of favorites from his own catalog, including “Two-Headed Boy Pt. 2″ and “In an Aeroplane Over the Sea.”

At one point, when a protester yelled, “Play some Dylan!” he quipped, “I only know three chords. Haven’t you noticed?”

By the end of his grand finale “Oh Comely!” the crowd were shouting along with the words, and Mangum was in great spirits. “You guys have done a beautiful f—ing thing,” he told the protesters, who called back, “You have done a beautiful f—ing thing!”

You can watch video footage of the performance after the jump.

Justin Bieber's Christmas album will feature Mariah Carey and the greatest holiday song ever recorded

Justin-Bieber

Like Nat King Cole, Elvis Presley, and Jewel before him, Justin Bieber is putting out a Christmas album this holiday season. It’s called Under the Mistletoe, and while that title suggests that it should be a bunch of gingerbread-fueled Yuletide slow jams, it almost certainly won’t be that.

Still, it should be a little livelier than your usual rocking around the tree. The 15 tracks on Mistletoe are both originals and traditional tunes, and there are a bunch of drop-ins from big stars, including Usher, Boyz II Men, and Busta Rhymes (who we hope will battle rap Shawty Mane on a track called “Drummer Boy”).

But the biggest headline is the presence of Mariah Carey, who will perform a duet with Bieber on “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” The tune, which appeared on Carey’s own 1994 Christmas album Merry Christmas, is one of her biggest hits (it made Merry Christmas the third best-selling Christmas album of all time) and also happens to be the best holiday song ever written.

Need proof? Just listen to this thing. READ FULL STORY »

Courtney Love tells 'Vanity Fair': If Kurt were alive 'I'd kill him'

Pier Marco Tacca/Getty Images

Another day, another moment of Courtney Love cray cray.

Asked in the most recent issue of Vanity Fair about whether she’s still mad at Kurt Cobain for committing suicide, Love replies, “Mad? Ya think?! If he came back right now I’d have to kill him, for what he did to us. I’d f—ing kill him. I’d f— him, and then I’d kill him.”

“He tried to kill himself three times!” Love insists, adding that he overdosed at least five times, forcing her to carry around Narcan, a drug that’s used to bring overdosing heroin users back to life. “I was the f—ng E.M.S.” she says. “I was always sticking pins in his balls.” READ FULL STORY »

Apple made non-iPhone-related announcements yesterday too

Lost in the shuffle of Tuesday’s announcement of the iPhone 4S at the first big Apple event in the post-Steve Jobs era was the news that Apple still makes iPods, and they continue to improve on them.

First, the Nano, which has become so associated with working out (something that Apple obviously recognizes) that they might as well just call the thing the iPod Gym. The latest iteration of the Nano comes in seven different colors and will now have built-in exercise-tracking capabilities, including a calorie counter. There are now also 16 different watch face variations for people who wear their Nano to tell the time, something that probably hadn’t occurred to you to do until now. With a maximum capacity of 16 gigabytes, you won’t be able to get a ton on there, but that’s more than enough space to keep you in Eminem songs while you train for your 5K.

As for the iPod Touch, it essentially got all the upgrades the new iPhone got. There’s a new operating system, iMessage (which lets you send text messages over Wi-Fi to other people with iPods or iPhones, not unlike Blackberry’s BBM system), and access to the iCloud, Apple’s new in-the-air media storage that will make your music, photos, and other media available anywhere. The first five gigabytes are free, and then upgrades are available for a fee, topping out at 50 gigs for $100 a year. Interestingly, stuff you buy on iTunes doesn’t count toward the storage limit, which probably makes record labels and copyright holders pretty happy, as it will (theoretically) encourage people to buy more stuff legitimately so they can have free access to it.

The iPod Touch tops out at 64 gigabytes (the same as the biggest iPad), but just in case you still want to cart around your entire music collection in your pocket, the iPod Classic still exists. They haven’t made any improvements on it in a while, but at 160 gigabytes, it’s still an old reliable standby, like a mud-covered pick-up truck that can still go. And just for the sake of being complete, Apple still makes the iPod Shuffle, just in case you like your music collection but don’t like choosing things from it.

Apple has sold 320 million iPods since the devices began, but how many of those have you been responsible for? And do you have a favorite iteration that you miss? Leave your iThoughts in the comments below.
