Is this the end for U2? And if it is, what would their legacy be?

Though they have been working on a new album of songs they supposedly love, recently came off the most successful rock tour in history, and are celebrating the twentieth anniversary of one of their boldest accomplishments, 1991′s Achtung Baby, U2 could be packing it in.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Bono spoke frankly about the band’s relevance and whether or not this seems like the end. “The band are like, ‘Will you shut up about being irrelevant?’” Bono told the magazine. “We’d be very pleased to end on No Line on the Horizon. We have so many [new] songs, some of our best. But I’m putting some time aside to just go and get lost in the music. I want to take my young boys and my wife and just disappear with my iPod Nano and some books and an acoustic guitar.”

Of course, Bono hedges a bit, adding “I doubt that” when asked about how realistic an instantaneous retirement would be. The Edge puts the odds at about 50/50 (“It’s quite likely you might hear from us next year, but it’s equally possible that you won’t,” he said), though as anybody who watched Davis Guggenheim’s documentary From the Sky Down knows, if U2 can survive the upheaval the led to Achtung Baby, then they probably have enough gas in the tank for another new album.

But for the sake of a reasonable argument on the Internet, let’s assume Bono wakes up tomorrow and decides to disappear to Thailand or something, taking the master tapes of whatever the band was working on and leaving no trace of music behind. READ FULL STORY »

AMAs announce more performers, including Justin Bieber and Kelly Clarkson. Who are you most excited for?

The list of AMA performers keeps growing. The American Music Awards announced today that Christina Aguilera, Justin Bieber, Mary J. Blige, Kelly Clarkson and Maroon 5 will be performing at this year’s ceremony, airing November 20th on ABC.

It’s no secret that on one watches for the actual awards — fan-voting means predictable, Bieber-fevered results. But the AMAs do attract top-tier performers, and this year is no exception. I can’t wait to see the inevitable Christina  Aguilera/Maroon 5 “Moves like Jagger” duet. I just hope FoxNews doesn’t show a clip of the performance…right, Adam?

It’s also a safe bet that viewers will be treated to a Justin Bieber Christmas song (fingers crossed for a Mariah Carey surprise guest appearance!) as well as previously-announced Katy Perry performing her new single.

I’m sure Perry is hoping a live performance will give her the edge over other Artist of the Year noms Adele, Lady Gaga, and Taylor Swift (and Lil’ Wayne, but let’s get real. He doesn’t stand a chance.) On second thought, great performance or not, Perry won’t upset. Lady Gaga’s little Monsters are going to be voting until their fingers break off. READ FULL STORY »

Flo Rida is having a really bad trip Down Under: Tazers, weed, canceled shows and more

Traveling to Australia from the United States can be difficult. It’s a really long flight, the toilets flush in the opposite direction, there are crazy-scary spiders everywhere, and there’s always the chance that you’ll run into Paul Hogan.

It’s disorienting and strange, so it’s understandable if a touring act heads down under and experiences a little turbulence along the way.

Still, rapper Flo Rida is having an exceptionally terrible time on the opposite side of the Earth. According to Pollstar, he did not appear at two different shows on the continent in the midst of “transportation and lodging issues.” His first appearance, at a 13,000-strong festival called Fat as Butter, was called off only hours before he was supposed to appear. In a statement, the promoter of the festival noted that he had already been paid in full and that fans were deeply disappointed by the no-show.

Later that night, Flo arrived at a club in Sydney for another show, but because of his tardiness (he was three hours late) and his general demeanor (the club owner said he was not in “suitable condition to perform”), that too was called off.

He did manage to make a performance the next day in Townsville, Queensland, though that was also semi-disastrous. During the show, police raided the hotel after they smelled marijuana smoke and detained Dakari Dalawn Phillips, Flo Rida’s personal assistant. Police discovered both weed and an Uzi taser, so Phillips will face both drug and weapons charges.

Flo himself was arrested for DUI in Miami earlier this year.

Sly Stone headed to rehab

Sly-Stone

Sly Stone has had a pretty rough year. He ran afoul of the law, released a poorly-received album, and ended up living in his van. Things could be looking up, though: the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member is now reportedly headed to rehab.

A source told Radar that Stone is looking to clean up and will be spending the next 90 days in a detox facility. “Sly has fallen on very hard times in the past few years,” the source said.

That’s a bit of an understatement; Stone has repeatedly struggled with drug problems that have been exacerbated by a string of bad business decisions. He spent two decades in relative seclusion but has made sporadic concert appearances since 2007. In his biggest show in recent years, he put on a rambling, fractured set at Coachella 2010.

As noted, Stone (born Sylvester Stewart) is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — he was inducted as a member of Sly & the Family Stone in 1993 — and was one of the key figures to infuse traditional R&B with elements of modern funk, arena rock, and psychedelia. The brew yielded classic genre cornerstones like “Underdog,” “Everyday People,” “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin),” and “Family Affair.”

The emotions (and the dancing doppelgangers) of romances past caught up to Jennifer Lopez on Saturday night at Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun Casino.

The singer-actress-mogul, recently separated from husband Marc Anthony (and already linked to a new love, actor Bradley Cooper), broke down in tears while introducing an acoustic version of her 1999 hit “If You Had My Love.”

According to E! News, the performance featured dancers dressed to look like former Lopez paramours, including Anthony, Diddy, Ben Affleck, and Cris Judd.

“You want to talk about love? I can talk about love. Oh, the stories!” Lopez told the audience before launching into what she called “the first song [she] wrote about love.”

“A little trip down memory lane, huh?,” she said as the song wound down, before wiping at her eyes and walking offstage.

Garbage return with first new recording in six years -- a cover of U2's 'Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses': Hear it here!

For fans of Garbage, when it rains it pours. (And we already know the rain triggers extreme jubilation.)

The band recently announced their reformation and the in-process-ness of their first new album since 2005′s Bleed Like Me, and now they have a freshly-recorded song just to let everybody know that they haven’t forgotten how to play their instruments in a studio.

The track is a cover of U2′s 1991 song “Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses,” one of the most beloved tracks from their landmark album Achtung Baby. It’s part of an Achtung tribute album put together by U.K. magazine Q that also includes contributions from Jack White (“Love Is Blindness”), Nine Inch Nails (“Zoo Station”), the Killers (“Ultraviolet (Light My Way)”), Depeche Mode (“So Cruel), Patti Smith (“Until the End of the World”), and the Fray (“Trying to Throw Your Arms Around the World”), among others.

Q is calling the tribute AHK-toong BAY-bi, and it’ll be floating around next week as a bonus on their new U2-themed issue. For now, spin Garbage’s “Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses” below. Doesn’t it feel good to hear Shirley Manson singing again? READ FULL STORY »
