Evanescence tops the Billboard 200 after five-year hiatus; Lauren Alaina debuts in fifth place

Evanescence

Despite a five-year break from the music scene and some major personnel changes, goth rockers Evanescence returned to the top of the Billboard 200 chart today with their self-titled third album, which sold 127,000 copies in its first week.

Though that number is far less than Evanescence’s last album, The Open Door, which debuted at No. 1 in 2006 with 447,000 copies sold, it is impressive that the Amy Lee-led band managed to move that many discs without a smash single like “My Immortal” or “Bring Me To Life.” Their current single, “What You Want” sits at number 13 on the Rock Songs chart.

Another rock band enjoyed a strong debut this week: L.A.’s Five Finger Death Punch started off at No. 3 (behind the indomitable Adele, whose 21 is STILL holding strong at No. 2) with 91,000 copies of their album, American Capitalist, sold. That’s a big jump from their 2009 record, War Is the Answer, which debuted at No. 7 with 44,000.

Last week’s chart champ, Scotty McCreery’s Clear As Day, slipped down into fourth place after a 55 percent drop to 88,000, giving him a two-week total of 285,000. Meanwhile, his runner-up, Lauren Alaina, got off to a pretty good start herself with 69,000 copies of her disc Wildflower sold in its debut week.

Ryan Adams’ Ashes and Fire and Martina McBride’s Eleven debuted with 49,000 and 40,000, respectively. Joe Jonas wasn’t as lucky. Without his brothers beside him, the “Just In Love” singer started at No. 15 with only 18,000 copies. Check out the top ten below: READ FULL STORY »

Rihanna falls in love, goes off the rails in her new 'We Found Love' video: Watch it here

Leaked pictures from the set of Rihanna’s “We Found Love” video last month made it seem like some the-wheat-fields-are-alive Sound of Music romp, but there is a distinct lack of raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens in the final product. Instead, it’s a Trainspotting-meets-Drugstore-Cowboy portrait of wasted youth and finding love in an apparently very pharmaceutical place.

Nicole Scherzinger releases seventh(!) post-Pussycats song, begging listeners, 'Try With Me': Will you?

Pussycat Doll. Sing-Off judge. X-Factor mentor. Is there anything Nicole Scherzinger can’t do?

Apparently, release an album.

After six attempts at launching her solo career Stateside — she continues to chart well in Europe — with singles that just didn’t take off, Ms. Scherzinger is back with a new song and video, this time for a track called “Try With Me.”

If the song hits, perhaps her album Killer Love, which was only released internationally, will finally get a U.S. release. (She’s been trying to go solo since 2007, although “Try With Me” is technically not yet slated a single for upcoming U.S. release.) If it doesn’t, one has to wonder how much longer various labels will tolerate an artist that audiences just don’t seem to like all that much on her own.

Check out the mossy-piano-driven ballad-turned-thumper, which features the sad (and perhaps sadly apropos) reflection,“Why does it feel like you care when I know that you don’t?” below: READ FULL STORY »

Coldplay's 'Paradise' video features unicycling, adorable trunk jokes: Watch it here!

Coldplay’s music may not be for everybody (“We’re as hated as a band can be,” according to frontman Chris Martin in the story in the current issue of Entertainment Weekly), but their music videos tend to be universally transcendent.

While the new clip for “Paradise” (the second video from Coldplay’s forthcoming fifth album Mylo Xyloto) isn’t as visually inventive as “The Scientist” or even “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall,” it is overflowing with charm.

Charm, and elephant suits.

The story goes like this: An elephant breaks free from the zoo and makes his way back to his home on an African plain, where his fellow elephants wear glasses and jam out to Coldplay songs.

Along the way, he busks for change, rides a unicycle, and executes a number of funny trunk-related visual gags. Check it out below. READ FULL STORY »

Metallica and Lou Reed's 'Lulu': Listen to the preview here!

Lou-Reed

Throughout their respective careers, both Lou Reed and Metallica have spent a healthy amount of their creative energy challenging their audiences.

Enthusiasts of both have sometimes had to embrace extreme sounds and ideas that are both deeply noncommercial and passionately counterintuitive. But people keep tuning in because the personalities behind the music are so strong and compelling that they dare you to look away.

So it’s no surprise that a chance collaboration during a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame anniversary concert has now resulted in a full-length album featuring both entities. Lulu hits store shelves on November 1, but there are previews of each one of the songs below.

They’re a strange marriage of Metallica’s turned-to-11 thump, Reed’s catty delivery, and lyrics that tell the story of a dancer who rises through society only to end up a poor prostitute (a tale originally told in a pair of plays written by German playwright Frank Wedekind). Give the tracks a spin below. READ FULL STORY »

Justin Bieber's snow- and smooch-filled 'Mistletoe' video debuts: Watch it here!

The vocals for Justin Bieber’s much-hyped Christmas single “Mistletoe” hit the internets yesterday, and today comes the visuals! That’s right, the video for Bieber’s light and airy, Jack Johnson-esque holiday ditty have just debuted.

The concept for the clip is simple: It’s Christmastime, snow is falling lightly but steadily, and Bieber is romancing a girl who’s not Selena Gomez. The only problem is that yet another gal pal — an old flame maybe? All that’s clear is that this dude is popular — keeps interrupting their business of teenage dating, which mostly amounts to coffee-drinking and longing glances. But this much can be said about Girl No. 2 Who’s Not Selena Gomez: Girl No. 1 Who’s Not Selena Gomez is none too pleased.

However, Girl No. 1 eventually finds herself — where else? — under the mistletoe with the follicullarly gifted singer and… Well, we won’t ruin it for you — although the headline to this post might have — but you can probably guess what happens under such a twig.

Check out all the Christmassey goodness here: READ FULL STORY »

The Stone Roses announce reunion at London press conference

British rockers the Stone Roses have confirmed they are reuniting. The announcement took place today at a press conference in London,  attended by all four members of the band’s classic lineup. The quartet will play two shows in their hometown of Manchester next June and then embark on a world tour.

The band released their critically acclaimed, self-titled first album in 1989. The same year the band put out the single, “Fool’s Gold,” whose melding of dance and rock would prove hugely influential on the British music scene.

The Roses then spent five years crafting their second, less enthusiastically-received collection, 1994′s Second Coming. The following year, drummer Reni left the band and guitarist John Squire followed in 1996. Singer Ian Brown and bassist Mani called it a day not long after.

As recently as 2009, Squire rejected the possibility that the band might get back together, creating a piece of art which featured the message “I have no desire whatsoever to desecrate the grave of seminal Manchester group The Stone Roses.”

You can see footage from the press conference and listen to “Fool’s Gold,” below. READ FULL STORY »

Jay-Z plays an animated version of himself in 'Secret Millionaires Club': Watch a preview here!

Jay-Z and Kanye West are about to embark on their big Watch the Throne tour, but the next place you can see Jay-Z (well, outside of random parks in Brooklyn) is on Secret Millionaires Club, a new animated series making its debut on The Hub this Sunday, October 23.

Guided by the entrepreneurial wisdom of Warren Buffett, SMC aims to teach kids lessons from the business world, and Jigga lends his voice to encourage the club’s young members.

It’s a little surreal hearing Hova’s unmistakable voice coming out of a cartoon character, even one that looks exactly like him, but it’s a pretty excellent animated visage regardless.

Check out a preview of the episode below, featuring Iceberg Slim’s be-suited voice acting. READ FULL STORY »

Eminem talks addiction, says 'The bigger the crowd, the bigger my habit got'

bad-meets-evil

Eminem hasn’t exactly avoided the topic of his relationship with a variety of illicit chemicals. After all, his last two albums were called Relapse and Recovery. But the man born Marshall Mathers has rarely been as candid about his struggles with addiction in the press.

In the pages of GQ, where he was named a “God of Rock” next to the likes of Keith Richards and Robert Plant, Em let the world know exactly why he is so prone to addiction. “I’m very much a creature of habit,” he told GQ. “If I’m used to waking up in the morning and having [a Red Bull], I could do it every morning for the next ten years straight until I find something else to move on to. So if I’m used to taking a Vicodin when I wake up in the morning because I’m hungover from drinking or taking pills … The bigger the crowd, the bigger my habit got.”

Eminem also explained that his drug problems could be traced over the course of his discography, noting that The Slim Shady LP was written almost entirely sober, the dark experiments on The Marshall Mathers LP were the result of more experimentation with substances, and Encore was hampered both artistically and practically thanks to his addiction to prescription medication (including Valium and Ambien).
