Kanye West and Jay-Z face official lawsuit over 'Watch the Throne' sample

The legal rumblings that began in August have now become a full-blown lawsuit: 75-year-old bluesman Syl Johnson is taking Jay-Z and Kanye West to court in Illinois over the uncleared usage — essentially, of a pronounced vocal “ungh!” — from his 1967 song “Different Strokes” on Watch the Throne‘s “The Joy.”

“The Joy” was originally intended to be included as a bonus track on Kanye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, then left off when sample clearances were not obtained in time; when the song subsequently appeared on WTT, Johnson’s reissue label Numero Group said that the distressed singer was “nearly in tears.” “[Throne label] Island Def Jam seems to think that Syl doesn’t have any fight left in him,” they wrote on their website. “We’re betting otherwise.”

Johnson, a relatively obscure but beloved figure in soul and blues — EW gave his 2010 box set Complete Mythology an A — has been sampled countless times in hip-hop; “Different Strokes” alone has been used more than two dozen times by giants of the genre such as Erik B. and Rakim (1987′s “I Know You Got Soul”), Public Enemy (1987′s “Miuzi Weighs a Ton” and 1989′s “Fight the Power”), De La Soul (1988′s “The Magic Number” and the Beastie Boys (1988′s “Desperado”).

In August, according to hiphopdx.com, Johnson told NBC, “”Well, they didn’t pay me. They used my style, my sound, my likeness, without my permission … I think Kanye West, kind of, he blew it. He knows me, he knows my daughter, Syleena Johnson” — who sang the hook on West’s 2004 hit “All Falls Down” — “And hey, for a few, you know, a small amount – do it [up] front like Kid Rock, Wu-Tang Clan and all the people behind me.

“I hate to sue people. I’ve sued quite a few people. But, it ain’t my thing to sue them. But, this is the law. This is a country of laws.”

Soulja is currently being held at Carrol County Jail.

Dixie Chicks headline concert for Texas wildfires relief

Dixie-Chicks

Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines told a thunderous crowd Monday night that “there was zero hesitation” when the band was asked to perform with fellow country stars to raise money for victims of recent wildfires in her home state of Texas. She and her band mates joined Willie Nelson, George Strait and other musicians during a mega-concert in Austin that raised more than $500,000. A fire that started Sept. 4 in Central Texas’ Bastrop County destroyed at least 1,500 homes and killed two people, marking the most devastating of the numerous fires that have scorched about 6,000 square miles in Texas in the last year.

Maines told the crowd she was worried that without homes, “you all might not look lovely.” But she told them they all looked fantastic. “When they called us to do this show, there was zero hesitation,” she said. “You can take the girl out of Texas, but you can’t take Texas out of the girl.” READ FULL STORY »

The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers makes 'I'm a Mormon' video: Watch it here

These days, it seems the Mormons are everywhere.

In addition to the smash Broadway play, the magazine covers, being called a “cult” by Robert Jeffress, and, of course, two Mormon presidential candidates vying for the Republican nomination, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints also has an ongoing multiplatform “I’m a Mormon” media campaign that began in New York and has since extended to 12 major cities.

The idea is to showcase everyday Mormons in their everyday lives — along the same lines as the Windows 7 “I’m a PC” ads — and the spots even caught the attention of Steven Colbert, who said the videos make Mormons “irresistibly cool.

Until now, the campaign has consisted of Mormon common-folk, but now they’re heading into new celebrity territory: the clip below shows Killers frontman Brandon Flowers discussing his faith and family: READ FULL STORY »

Kelly Clarkson's 'You Love Me' leaks: Listen here!

Kelly-Clarkson

There’s still a week until Kelly Clarkson’s fifth studio album, Stronger, officially hits retailers, but here’s a little something to tide you over until then: The original American Idol diva has just dropped another song from the collection, “You Love Me,” on YouTube.

Like the other tracks from Stronger that have surfaced — “What Doesn’t Kill You (Stronger)” and “Mr. Know It All” — “You Love Me” is written from the perspective of a scorned lover. “You didn’t let me down / You didn’t tear me apart / You just opened my eyes / While breaking my heart,” Clarkson sings on the midtempo chorus, before getting to the lyrics that explain why the song is named what it is: “You just made me cry by claiming you love me, you love me, you love me.”

The whole thing is laid over driving guitar riffs, so it never gets too sad or weepy. It’s another song that’s sure to please fans — this one here is certainly very pleased with it — even if it doesn’t make a big splash on radio. Take a listen here:

Katy Perry sings ballad version of 'The One That Got Away' on 'X Factor': Your opinion is desired

Let’s debate: Katy Perry performed a slowed-down version of her new single “The One That Got Away” on the U.K X Factor last night… and sounded surprisingly good.

Rocking a new pink hairdo and wielding a guitar, the emotional, stripped-down performance was a success for Perry, who is obviously more known for her radio hits than her live-performance chops.

But give the lady some credit:  she sounds better here than she does on the recorded version of the tune. I could have done without the back-up wails, but otherwise, she should definitely add this version into her rotation.

Check out the performance below: READ FULL STORY »

Justin Bieber's 'Mistletoe' single from his upcoming Christmas album: Hear it here!

justin-bieber-mistletoe_320.jpg?w=320&h=320

Look, we know it’s only October 17, and Halloween still hasn’t worn out its welcome, and you still haven’t thought about which family members you’re going to avoid on Thanksgiving this year.

But whether you like it or not, you’re going to have to get into the Christmas spirit, because there’s a bevy of high-profile holiday albums on the horizon both expected (Michael Bublé), welcome (She & Him), and entirely out of left field (Scott Weiland).

Of all the Christmas records that will be flooding the market over the next few months, the one that has the potential to both do big business and make tween girls reconsider what to put in their letters to Santa belongs to Justin Bieber.

Under the Mistletoe, his collection of Christmas tunes both old and new, will be released to stores on November 1 and then immediately put into heavy rotation while you comb the racks at Macy’s. The album’s first single, the reggae-kissed “Mistletoe,” is now available, with the video premiering tomorrow on MTV. Give the song a well-tinseled spin after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

Beyoncé Leads the Bé-Boys in 'Love On Top': Watch it Here

Categories: Beyonce, Music Videos

While she’s waiting on her new edition, Beyoncé’s fronting New Edition.

At least, that’s what it looks like in this new video for “Love on Top,” which finds Queen Béy in a big-windowed warehouse-like room, leading a five-man dance team in apparent tribute to New Edition’s “If It Isn’t Love” video.

Filmed pre-pregnancy (or at least pre-showing, which probably isn’t gonna help those fake baby-bump rumors), the video also shows Beyonce shimmying in suits that look like the one she wore during her famous tummy-rubbing reveal on the VMAs, while her Bé-boys back her up with their best Temptations moves.

Recently asked what was on her bucket list, she said, “I want to create a boy band.” Well, now she’s got one, and there’s another member on the way.

Watch her “smiling out from ear to ear” in the video, after the jump.
