Coldplay's Chris Martin on 'Princess of China' guest Rihanna: 'She's a much, much better singer than me'

There is still a week to go before the release of Coldplay’s fifth album, Mylo Xyloto, and earlier today the tune that will undoubtedly be the disc’s most talked-about made its way onto the Internet — though the band’s label, EMI, is consistently pulling the song down where they find it.

Back when the track listing was first announced, “Princess of China” immediately stood out, mostly because it contained the note “featuring Rihanna” right after it.

It isn’t the first time a voice that isn’t Martin’s has shown up on a Coldplay song (remember that version of “Lost!” that captured one of Jay-Z’s best freestyles over the piano solo?), but “Princess of China” is a pretty powerful departure for the band, as it not only invites RiRi along for the ride but also locks into something like an R&B groove (or at least the British swoop-rock interpretation of an R&B groove).

“She’s one of the top five singers in the world,” Martin told EW during a recent conversation about the new album (the results of which you can read in the current issue, on newsstands now). “While we were working on it, I was thinking, ‘I wish Rihanna was singing this.’ That was around the time of Rated R, when she was singing dark stuff like ‘Russian Roulette.’ I got nervous to ask [drummer] Will [Champion], because I knew he would say, ‘Well, we don’t really have guests on the records,’ but then I asked him and it was accepted as an idea. But the song itself was always asking for her. The process of getting her to sing on it took ages, but in my head I would have been very disappointed if anyone else had done it.” READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol' roundup: Four new music videos from non-winners: What do you think?

Casey-James

It’s always fun to follow the careers of American Idol contestants who don’t win the show.

Most of them fade into relative obscurity once the American Idols LIVE! tour wraps, but some score record deals and go on to have fruitful careers in the music biz.

Season 9 contestant Casey James came in third place on the show, but he was quickly signed to Sony Music Nashville, and with his just-released music video for extra smooth country single “Let’s Don’t Call it a Night,” he’s making his best effort to stay relevant post-Idol. (The single currently sits at number 43 on the country chart.)

Check out James’ video below, along with new-ish new music videos from Siobhan Magnus, Josh Gracin, and Brooke White’s duo Jack and White. Which ones sound/look best to you? READ FULL STORY »

UPDATE: Rick Ross is reportedly in stable condition after suffering a second seizure on another flight. The second flight, headed to Memphis from Fort Lauderdale, had to make an emergency landing in Birmingham, Alabama at 5:44 p.m. CT.

5:54 P.M. FRIDAY: Earlier today on a flight from Fort Lauderdale to Memphis, Rick Ross reportedly suffered a seizure so severe that it required the plane to make an emergency landing. EMTs subsequently performed CPR on the rapper, who had lost consciousness.

Apparently though, he really is the Teflon Don; he’s already back on Twitter and recovering safely. Wale, an artist signed to Ross’s label, also took to Twitter to tout his boss’s health, saying “I just talked to Ross…he’s 100 pct ok…@tmz #dontpanic #dontpanic #mmg !!!! #gfid dec 13th!,” he wrote.

Ross’s next album God Forgives, I Don’t, is due this December, and just this week he released “This Is a Tower Heist” with Nas, the theme song to the upcoming Eddie Murphy-Ben Stiller crime comedy Tower Heist.

Americana Music Awards: Avett Brothers, Mumford and Sons, Robert Plant take home top honors

Ever since the diamond-selling O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack exploded in 2001, acoustic Americana acts have been building fan bases and selling albums without much help from mainstream radio, and the genre has quietly become a major force in the music industry over the past decade.

Just look at 2011! Banjo-flaunting bands like Mumford & Sons, The Avett Brothers (pictured), The Civil Wars, and Wilco have all enjoyed strong and enduring album sales this year. And the boys of Mumford and Avett got to perform with Bob Dylan at February’s Grammy Awards, which included the category “Best Americana Album” for the first time ever.

Merriam-Webster even created a musical definition for “Americana” in its esteemed dictionary which reads: “a genre of American music having roots in early folk and country music.”

Last night, the genre’s very best met in Nashville at the famous Ryman Auditorium for the 10th Annual Americana Honors and Awards Show, which celebrates all the rootsy musicians leading this folk revolution. The show, which you can listen to in full over on NPR, was one big lovefest. READ FULL STORY »

David Guetta and Usher go continent-hopping for 'Without You' video: Watch it here!

Ubiquitous DJ-turned-dance music producer David Guetta is closing in on a banner 2011, thanks to his guest-happy, hit-filled solo album Nothing But the Beat.

The album’s third single “Without You,” which features syrupy, plaintive vocals care of Usher, is currently sitting at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100, and the track now has a flashy video that premiered earlier today.

The video opens with a little intercontinental flavor, driving home the fact that Guetta is beloved all over the world. While Guetta is laying down beats for hordes of people, Usher is all alone on a beach.

But wait! Before you weep for Usher and his loneliness, there’s a (literally earth-shattering) twist!

Check out the clip below, and feel free to do your little desk chair dance to keep your Friday afternoon funky. READ FULL STORY »

Adam Levine gets naked for fashion (and love): See the pictures

Is it hot in here?

It’s getting harder and harder to breathe thanks to these new (naked!) shots of Adam Levine in Russian Vogue.

Check out these NSFW pics featuring multiple images of The Voice judge and Maroon 5 frontman giving sexy stares and seducing the camera alongside his Russian-born supermodel girlfriend Anne Vyalitsyna.

These two seem to be joined at the (nude) hip: She’s been in the Maroon video  for “Misery” as well as “Never Going To Leave This Bed,” both of which feature the pair in various states of undress.

Inside the magazine, in another naked shot, we see Levine has tattooed  A N N E across his fingers—sorry ladies, I guess it’s serious for now. Can we talk for a second about just how tattooed Levine is? It took seeing him without clothes to realize how fully decked out his (extremely fit) body is. Check those arms!

This isn’t the first time the “Moves Like Jagger” singer has forgotten his pants for the camera. The singer stripped down for testicular cancer awareness in a UK Cosmopolitan centerfold last February. He’s hot and socially aware!

Readers, what do you think? Is he showing too much skin, or not enough?

Bill Clinton's favorite music -- check out his presidential playlist

Bill-Clinton

Image Credit: Richard Corkery/NY Daily News Archive via Getty Images

Was Bill Clinton the most musical president in the history of the United States? He’s an accomplished jazz saxophonist, openly embraced MTV during his campaign (back when the “M” still stood for “Music”), spent plenty of quality time with rock stars (it was Bono’s beginning as a White House regular), and he even has two Grammys (admittedly, both for Best Spoken Word performances on audiobooks).

This Saturday night, some of the biggest stars in music — Bono and the Edge, Lady Gaga, Usher, Kenny Chesney among them — are going to tip their hats back to Clinton at the “A Decade of Difference” concert at the Hollywood Bowl in celebration of the tenth anniversary of the William J. Clinton Foundation. As a lead-up to the show, Clinton opened up his iPod and let Yahoo take a look at his 20 favorite songs of all time.

The full list is here, and a handful of things stand out. Of course, there’s plenty of jazz on there, as well as an expected number of rock names from the ’60s and ’70s, like Van Morrison, Simon & Garfunkel, Elton John, and Carly Simon.

The newest song on there is Sarah McLachlan’s “Angel,” which suggests that Clinton either has a weakness for trilling Canadians or simply can’t get that ASPCA commercial that makes everybody cry out of his mind.

Interestingly, there are parallels to current president Barack Obama’s playlist, mostly the shout-out to Miles Davis. Perhaps they’ll both find his recent Live Europe 1967: The Bootleg series Vol. 1 under the Christmas tree this year (EW gave it an A, Commanders!)

Disappointingly, Clinton didn’t make any nods to hip-hop the way Obama did when he shouted out Jay-Z and Lil Wayne in his Rolling Stone interview. If Bill would like a little rap education, we have a suggestion where he should start.

What do you think of Clinton’s picks? Let us know in the comments.

Charlie Daniels Band keyboardist Joel 'Taz' DiGregorio dies in car crash on the way to a performance

The-Devil-Went-Down

Longtime Charlie Daniels Band keyboardist and co-writer of legendary country-rock yarn “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” Joel “Taz” DiGregorio died on Wednesday night (October 12) in a single-car accident. He was 67 years old.

DiGregorio’s car flipped over on Interstate 40 just west of Nashville. He was on his way to Georgia for a concert, which was subsequently canceled.

“It won’t be easy without him,” Daniels told the Associated Press. “He was an intricate part of our sound for 40 years. If you listened to our records, you could hear Taz all over them.”

Daniels noted that while tomorrow night’s show in Connecticut had also been canceled, he would resume performances next weekend in Oklahoma, with the band carrying on short one member.

“I won’t replace him now,” Daniels said. “I can’t come to grips with replacing him right now, but I will.”

Lyric Videos: Is this a trend now? Britney Spears' 'Criminal' joins the YouTube fray

Britney-Spears-Criminal-cover

Lyric videos: They aren’t just for your kid sister’s Justin Bieber fan clips anymore.

Yesterday, Britney Spears released an official lyric video for “Criminal,” her upcoming fourth single off Femme Fatale.

First of all, awesome: That song has a darker edge than some of her previous work, but still retains her trademark computer-y syrup-y sweet voice, if that’s your thing (and it’s kind of mine).

But it got me wondering: When did lyric videos become an official, publicist-touted release? Spears still plans to be put out a traditional music video—in fact, she’s been making headlines across the pond for her Criminal video shoot. So apparently, this lyric video is just to build buzz and get you talking about the song.

Check it out below: READ FULL STORY »
