Bruce Springsteen fans can finally exhale a sigh of relief and start planning for another summer with the E Street Band. With the passing of saxophonist Clarence Clemons over the summer, the future of the E Street Band seemed uncertain. And though they will never be the same without Clemons, the band has opted to soldier on.

In an announcement made on their official website, the band confirmed that they will be touring in 2012, beginning with Europe dates (including stops at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland and the Hard Rock Calling in London) from mid-May until the end of July. After that, the band will head to the U.S. for yet-to-be-announced dates.

It seems the band, who assured “things are starting to heat up down on E Street,” will also be trying out some new material on the road next summer, telling fans in the statement, “We want you to know that the [new] music is almost done (but still untitled), we have almost settled on the release date (but not quite yet), and that we are all incredibly excited about everything that we’re planning for 2012. That’s all the info we have for right now, but we’ll get back to you — real soon.”

Justin Bieber dons yellow zebra pants, shuffles on stage with LMFAO at the AMAs: Watch it here!

After a night of electro-fizzy, TRON-imitating, backing track-assisted performances, LMFAO appropriately closed the 2011 American Music Awards (Check out the winners!) with a thumping medley of “Party Rock Anthem” and “Sexy And I Know It.”

The afro’d duo provided all the typical pop tropes people have come to expect at an awards show like this. You know, giant robot heads, laser beams shooting from the ceiling, glittery bras, and an entire crowd of people wearing 3-D glasses — the stuff music is really about, at least according to the AMAs.

One thing most performance don’t have, though? A dancing cameo by pop culture’s favorite 5’3″ teen sensation: Justin Bieber.

Wearing a yellow pair of LMFAO’s trademark Zubaz pants, Bieber hopped into the middle of the rowdy dance circle and shuffled out a chorus to “Party Rock Anthem” while wearing a sleeveless black shirt with the word “SEXY” emblazoned across the chest. Check out the finale performance below (Bieber appears around the 2:45 mark): READ FULL STORY »

Kelly Clarkson's jazzy, big-band version of 'Mr. Know It All' at the AMAs: What did you think?

At the American Music Awards, Kelly Clarkson came out swingin’.

Not only did the original American Idol, clad in a sparkly red mermaid gown, dismiss rumors about her record label conflicts, sexuality, and style by belting, “You don’t know a thing about me,” to “reporters,” but she flipped the switch on her pop/R&B-lite single “Mr. Know It All,” turning it into a brassy big-band production.

Surrounded by the 1930s equivalent of paparazzi (or maybe just the cast of Newsies), Clarkson bopped and swayed to the jazzy trombone blasts, and she nailed her big chorus riffs at the end of the number. Check it out below: READ FULL STORY »

TV Jukebox: 'How I Met Your Mother,' 'Hart of Dixie' feature our favorite songs on TV this week

How-Mother-Crooked

Valentine’s Day may still be nearly three months away, but we saw some serious sensuality in our favorite shows’ song choices this week. There was also a whole lot of heartbreak, a meat truck moment that would have been best kept private, and a dead body for good measure. From a 1970s R&B icon to an Irish electronic trio, plus some old-fashioned singer-songwriters and an experimental musician in the mix, keeping reading to see our Jukebox picks below! The Muppets soundtrack preview: the cutest thing you’ll see today

The Muppets may not be hosting the Oscars, but they’re still having a pretty great week.

A hilarious soundtrack preview had debuted, featuring the Muppets (and Jason Segel!) showcasing snippets of the songs found on the soundtrack, but the real highlight is the comment images laid over the video, perfectly mimicking YouTube-style sass.

The soundtrack has all the classics, like the Muppets theme song and “Rainbow Connection” sung by Kermit, but there are also some fun surprises. The trailer teases “Me Party,” a duet between Amy Adams and Miss Piggy, as well as a muppet barbershop quartet version of “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

'Yo! MTV Raps' returns -- what's your pick for the greatest hip-hop clip of all time?

yo-mtv-raps

If there’s one thing that the recently-released oral history I Want My MTV got across, it’s the newsflash that the network no longer really cares about music (or at least not the way it did in the 1980s). Their forward-thinking philosophy has theoretically given them shark-like memories, though there are occasional bits of nostalgia that manage to sneak in between airings of Teen Mom and whatever Chelsea Settles is.

They’ve already moved 120 Minutes from a monthly show to a weekly one (albeit in a singularly painful timeslot, Friday mornings between 6 and 8 a.m.), and they just announced that they’re going to bring back Yo! MTV Raps for one night only on December 4.

The original show was a watershed moment in TV history, and undeniably helped move hip-hop into the mainstream — Though apparently, the audience was already fiending for it; that same oral history notes that the first episode of Yo! MTV Raps in 1988 instantly became the most-watched show in the network’s history.

The special Yo! MTV Raps Classic Cuts will take a look back at the show’s origins (a number of different people have taken credit for it’s creation, though most agree it wouldn’t have existed without late film director Ted Demme, who was then a PA at the network), its hosts (Dr. Dre, Ed Lover, and Fab 5 Freddy), and its cultural reach (namely making cultishly-adored rappers like Rakim into household names).

The show also promises to deep dive into three legendary clips that ran in heavy rotation during the show’s golden era: A Tribe Called Quest’s “Scenario” (featuring the debut of a crazy young MC from New York named Busta Rhymes), Geto Boys’ “My Mind’s Playing Tricks on Me,” and Ice Cube’s “It Was a Good Day.” While all of those are indeed classics in their own way, what other hip-hop videos from the show’s original run (1988-1995) qualify as the greatest? Margaret Cho's 'Baby I'm With the Band' video -- spot cameos from Conan O'Brien, Weezer, Wayne Coyne and more

Baby, what band is she not with?

The video for talking comedian turned sometimes-singing comedian Margaret Cho’s latest single from Cho Dependent – her first official foray into music, with assistance from Fiona Apple, Andrew Bird, and Tegan & Sarah — is essentially a backstage pass to last year’s Bonnaroo.

Watch as Cho cuddles with Conan and Wayne Coyne, gets down with Gwar, fans out on Weezer, does ugly yoga with featured guest Brendan Benson, disappears into a dressing room with OK Go, steals Andy Richter’s hat, and sits on Christmas Tree Mom‘s face: READ FULL STORY »

Lady Gaga releases two-minute preview of 'Marry The Night': watch here!

What a tease!

Lady Gaga has just released a two-minute preview for her new video, “Marry The Night” and it’s a doozy. Forgoing an elaborate costume, Gaga still manages to shock in a mousy brown bob and hospital gown, lying atop a gurney in a hospital fashioned similarly to the bath haus in the “Bad Romance” video.

The highly stylized clip has a lot of voiceover, with Gaga intoning, “And truthfully the lie of it all is much more honest, because I invented it,” and “It’s not that I’ve been dishonest, it’s just that I loathe reality.” This is a common theme of her concerts: getting lost in the fantasy; swept up in a dream. And on it’s own, that idea is not necessarily a bad thing.

But judging from the clip, it appears her reality is a suicide attempt; the video is dark, but also humorous — a side eye alongside emotional upheaval. It’s more than a little disturbing.

Did Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way' giveaway inspire Billboard's new chart rules?

There was quite a bit of hemming and hawing back in May about the massive sales push that Lady Gaga’s Born This Way received when it was released.

The big controversy came when Amazon decided to use the album as a launching pad for its Cloud service and made the entirety of the record available for the low low price of 99 measly cents. Gaga ended up moving over one million units of Born This Way in its first week of release, though nearly half of those (around 440,000) came via the Amazon fire sale.

The e-tailer defended its choice by noting that it was a loss leader for their Cloud service, and that they actually paid full price to Gaga’s label for the album, but a lot of people viewed it as cheating.

Apparently, the folks at Billboard agree. Starting next week, the publication (which tracks album sales via Nielsen SoundScan) will overhaul their sales rules. There are a handful of new rules, but the juiciest one is the fact that albums priced below $3.49 will not be included in sales tallies.

Were those standards in place back when Born This Way hit the streets, Gaga’s total likely would not have broken that seven-figure threshold. READ FULL STORY »
