Etta James condition better, taken off respirator

Categories:

Etta James’ manager says the terminally ill blues singer is breathing on her own after being taken off a respirator.

Lupe De Leon says Friday that the change in her condition is great news and that the singer’s blood pressure is normal.

De Leon says James was put on a respirator when she was hospitalized in Southern California on Dec. 21 because she was having trouble breathing.

James has been diagnosed with terminal leukemia and is suffering from dementia. She has been receiving mostly at-home care.

Earlier this month, a judge set aside $350,000 for her medical care.

James is best known for the hit “At Last.”

The 10 top music-video directors of 2011: Watch their best clips here

Looking back at the best music videos of 2011, one thing leaped out: All of the best clips were made by the same six or seven people.

So rather than call out individual entries for their greatness, we’re going to reward the directors who put together the best portfolios this year. Anybody can make one excellent video, but it takes serious jiujitsu to knock out three great ones. That left a lot of awesome videos on the table (all apologies to excellent entries like Foo Fighters’ “Walk,” Beyoncé’s “Countdown,” and Ke$ha’s “Blow”), but this is a pretty good sum-up of the year in music videos.

1) Spike Jonze
Jonze only stood behind the camera for two videos this year, but they were both game-changers. Beastie Boys’ “Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win” was a sandbox revelation that was way better than the actual feature film based on GI Joe, while Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “Otis” turned that pair’s obsession with commercialism into a bombastic brand of Americana. Pour one out for the fallen Maybach, and raise your glass to Jonze, who proved that no amount of directing polarizing adaptations of beloved books for children can take away his four-minute spark. Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have a holiday question for you: Watch the video here

(500) Days of Summer fans will be happy to see that Tom and Summer appear to have worked things out—just in time for the new year.

Indie’s reigning prom king and queen—Deschanel’s even wearing a crown!—put their respective musical skills on display in this sing-along cover of the Nancy Wilson original “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” complete with (of course) a ukelele.

This is hardly the first time the actors have tried their hand at other artistic endeavors. In addition to recently getting a Golden Globe nod for her starring role as Jess on New Girl, Deschanel sings with She & Him and is a cofounder of the creative community/site HelloGiggles.

Gordon-Levitt too is a recent Golden Globe nominee for 50/50, and founded the collaborative production company HitRECord. He’s also no stranger to a well-placed musical number. READ FULL STORY »

Kelly Clarkson gets into extended Twitter war over endorsement of Ron Paul

Last night, Kelly Clarkson got an impromptu lesson on the impact of Twitter and the secret past of Ron Paul. The “Stronger” singer’s evening took a pretty intense left-hand turn when, only an hour after letting the world know that she was enjoying making cinnamon rolls with her niece, she decided to sound off on her love for Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul.

“I love Ron Paul. I liked him a lot during the last republican nomination and no one gave him a chance,” she wrote of the oft-lampooned Libertarian. “If he wins the nomination for the Republican party in 2012 he’s got my vote. Too bad he probably won’t.”

That particular expression of appreciation did not sit well with Clarkson’s 925,000 followers, many of whom began to take Clarkson to task for her endorsement. It began with relative civility, but as most things on the Internet (and especially on Twitter) tend to do, it got out of hand with alarming speed. READ FULL STORY »

Album Sales: Michael Buble tops the chart (again), and Adele logs her best sales week yet

Michael-Buble

Michael Bublé’s Christmas has only been in stores for nine weeks, but it’s had no trouble becoming the 2nd highest-selling album of 2011, behind Adele’s 21.

This week, Bublé topped the Billboard 200 for a fifth straight week, selling 467,000 copies and lifting his holiday collection’s total to a very merry 2.43 million (all five of Michael Bublé’s albums have topped the 2 million mark). Expect a hefty drop next week, though, now that Christmas Day has passed.

In second place, Adele’s 21 notched its best-ever sales week (in its 45th week of release!), moving 399,000 units. The album’s previous best week came with its debut in February, when 21 sold 352,000. This year, 21 has sold an astonishing 5.68 million Stateside, and on top of reclaiming the No. 1 spot next week, the album should pass the 6 million mark early in the new year. READ FULL STORY »

Two women charged with fraud for faking injuries in Indiana State Fair stage collapse

There’s horrible, there’s despicable, and then there’s the latest story to emerge from the sincerely tragic stage collapse at the Indiana State Fair over the summer: Two women who have sued for compensation for injuries incurred in that incident were allegedly not injured at all—or even present at the site of the collapse.

Seven people died as a result of the accident, while dozens more faced debilitating injuries. A handful of lawsuits have emerged in an attempt to assign culpability, including one levied at Surgarland, who were about to take the stage when high winds overtook the structure.

So it’s a little sickening that investigators have charged self-proclaimed victims Stephanie Murry and Sandra Hurn with fraud. Though the women were seeking compensation funds, a prosecutor in Indianapolis declared that neither were actually on the grounds that day, and were merely trying to bilk the Indiana State Fair Remembrance Fund and the Indiana Tort Claim Fund.

According to local officials, both women made multiple hospital trips in an effort to create a proper paper trail that would back up their claims. When investigators realized that some of the documentation was falsified, Hurn copped to the scheme, which the pair plotted together a few hours after the initial disaster.

Murry faces charges of attempted theft, forgery, and perjury, all felonies which could land her in jail for up to 14 years. Since Hurn actually succeeded in collecting a $7,500 check from the Remembrance Fund, she picks up a charge of felony theft that raises her potential prison stint up to 36 years.

Experimental saxophonist and original member of Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention Jim Sherwood passed away on Christmas of undetermined causes. He was 69 years old.

Nicknamed “Motorhead” for his love of automobiles, Sherwood played sax on all of Zappa’s early albums, ending his stint with the Mothers of Invention after the release of the classic 1970 album Weasels Ripped My Flesh. He met Zappa in high school, where the pair bonded over their love of old blues music, and began his stint with the Mothers of Invention as an equipment manager, only occasionally participating in the recordings (he is credited with providing “noises” on the band’s 1966 debut Freak Out!).

He joined the band as a musician full-time in 1967, ripping through saxophone and percussion parts for the seven subsequent Zappa albums before the Mothers of Invention dissolved in 1969. Sherwood stayed close to Zappa, appearing in his classic cult film 200 Motels and frequently worked with him on subsequent musical projects up until the latter’s death in 1993. Later, he made multiple appearances with the Grandmothers, a collection of musicians who played alongside Zappa at various points in his career.

Mark Wahlberg wants to make Justin Bieber a movie star

Mark Wahlberg would really prefer the world not remember him for inspiring sweet sensations at the dawn of his career. Remarkably, he has mostly accomplished that feat over the past decade and a half — carving out a major career for himself as an actor (though he’d probably rather be thought of as Mickey Ward than the guy who figures out that plants are killing people).

Apparently, Wahlberg sees a similar future for Justin Bieber. In a recent conversation with MTV about his upcoming movie Contraband (whose trailer looks like one of the fake ones that runs before Tropic Thunder), Wahlberg talked about casting Bieber in a dramatic role in a future film that has something to do with basketball. The artist formerly known as Marky Mark says that he sees something in the Canadian pop pinup that let him know he can handle a dramatic role.

“I’m pretty intuitive,” Wahlberg explained. “I see the guy and spent time with him, and you see what he does and how he does it, and then you actually have a conversation with him, and it’s there.”

Wahlberg may have a point. READ FULL STORY »

Jon Bon Jovi death-hoax starter says he did it because he was 'irritated' at JBJ's lack of musical focus, admits he was wrong

On December 19, the Internet was set ablaze with shocking news: Rocker, actor, philanthropist, and arena-football enthusiast Jon Bon Jovi had suddenly died! What began as a suggestion on Twitter quickly escalated into a huge story, as reporters and well-wishers gathered around the hospital where Bon Jovi had supposedly lost his grip on life.

But just as quickly, the news was outed as a hoax, and Bon Jovi himself cheekily posted a new photograph of himself on Facebook, very much alive, holding a sign that read, “Heaven looks an awful lot like New Jersey.”

Now the originator of the hoax is facing a tremendous backlash from fans. In a conversation with the Asbury Park Press, Jeffery Goho noted that he tweeted about Bon Jovi’s death out of frustration that the singer had spent so much time away from the band pursuing other interests. READ FULL STORY »

Heavy D died of pulmonary embolism, deep leg thrombosis: Coroner's report

Heavy-D

The death of Dwight Myers (known to the music world as Heavy D) remains tragic but is now no longer mysterious. According to the report by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office, the 44-year-old rap icon died due to a pulmonary embolism (a blockage of the main artery that services the lungs) and deep leg-vein thrombosis (a condition that causes blood clots). As the coroner notes, he also suffered from cardiovascular disease (likely exacerbated by his weight), which also contributed to his passing.

A more detailed version of the the coroner’s report should appear within two weeks, but the preliminary findings match up with the assumptions and speculations made by fans when Heavy D passed away on November 8. Though he had been medicating himself with cough syrup for symptoms related to pneumonia, though neither of those elements contributed to his passing.

It’s likely that the MC developed deep vein thrombosis during the long transcontinental flight he took the day before he died, as he had just returned home to Los Angeles after a trip to London.
