The 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees: Deserving music legends or just a bunch of old white dudes?

The Music Mix’s dream that Axl Rose’s cornrows be permanently retired to a museum in Cleveland came one step closer to realization today with the news that Guns N’ Roses will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame next April.

The band’s fellow Hall of Fame newbies are the Beastie Boys, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Small Faces/The Faces, the late singer-songwriter Laura Nyro, and hippie troubadour Donovan. The list of nominees who didn’t get the electoral nod this year is made up of Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, the Cure, Heart, Eric B. and Rakim, Rufus with Chaka Khan, Donna Summer, War, Freddie King, and the Spinners, at least some of whom may now be available for birthdays and bar mitzvahs on April 14.

Taken on a case-by-case basis, it’s difficult to argue with many of the choices. Guns N’ Roses, the Beasties, and the Chili Peppers are all hugely popular and have enjoyed many-chaptered careers, even if the most recent parts of the Roses’ tale have resembled chapters in a book about horrific car accidents.

And Nyro and Donovan certainly added their own hues to rock’s rich tapestry, although I know my colleague Rob Brunner would have preferred the Cure or Erik B. and Rakim get inducted over the latter. You could reasonably argue that Faces members — and previous Hall of Fame inductees — Ron Wood and Rod Stewart don’t really need another gong on their mantelpiece. But had the pair only ever recorded “Stay With Me,” they would have gotten my vote (if I had one): READ FULL STORY »

Speak now, Music Mixers: Taylor Swift says her fourth album will be 'very different' -- which direction should she go next?

She may not have released an album, but Billboard’s Woman of the Year still had a pretty awe-inspiring 2011. This past weekend, Swift gave a little tease about her new album, most likely due to drop sometime in late 2012.

“[My records] all seem to have a theme to them,” she explained, ” and this one is no different. It’s very different in what it’s about, but it’s no different in the fact that it has its own name.”

I wonder how how outside the box pop-country’s reigning queen is prepared to go after her chart-topping third release. Now that her Speak Now tour has wrapped, and she’s presumably working on album number four fulltime, let’s help her brainstorm. Where does she go from here? READ FULL STORY »

British Navy lipsync Mariah Carey's 'All I Want For Christmas Is You': I'm On a Boat edition!

Here at EW, we love a good Christmas lip dub. And this heartwarming frolic on the high seas is no exception.

According to the video description, the crew of the HMS Ocean found out they would all get to be going home for the holidays after 214 days at sea, and they just had to celebrate–sometimes shirtless.

It turns out that Christmas joy means the same thing on a boat as it does everywhere else: Breaking out Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” and dancing your Santa-loving heart out.

Watch the crew’s explosion of Christmas cheer, including elaborate impromptu costumes (made only with things they had aboard — crafty!), high kicks and more below: READ FULL STORY »

Tonight’s gig at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom marks a momentous occasion for Thirty Seconds to Mars. Not only is the band wrapping up an international tour, they’re also breaking the Guinness World Record for  most shows performed during a single album cycle. Over the last two years, the band has circled the globe several times to promote their gold-certified third album, This Is War. ”We’ve been virtually everywhere — not only once but twice and sometimes three times,” said frontman Jared Leto. ”It’s been the journey of a lifetime.” From his hotel in Antwerp, Belgium, Leto spoke with EW about returning home after two years on the road, the social concert experience Mars is launching at tonight’s concert, their forthcoming live concert film, and what else is in store for 2012.

Because she ruled everything else this year: Adele is now tweeting!

Though you cannot technically set fire to the rain, you can light up the internet. Temporarily silenced Adele is now Tweeting @officialadele.

The handle has been in use for a while — with her production company giving admirers updates, such as her recent six Grammy nominations. Up until now, however, Adele herself has been mum. But it seems even the “Someone Like You” star can’t resist the lure of hashtags and retweets.

Yesterday she made her debut, writing, “Right! Its me! I will start tweeting if 10k of u start following @drop4drop &their trip to India this wk. Its a wonderful charity. Go! A xxx”

Naturally, Adelaholics immediately rose to the challenge, hoping to hear more from the 21 songstress.

The cheeky gal (seriously, check out her blog) seems to be holding  up well after her vocal cord surgery. After rabid fan response to her first tweet, she shared a photo, posing in front of a Beyoncé poster, saying, “”F*ck me that was quick! ThankU! I’m in bed, watchin Gladiator, eatin an apple. Here’s a pic of me & Queen B last wk in NYC! X.”

Donning her best fierce face and pretending to be Bey? Stars! They’re just like us.

Kris Allen talks to EW about working on his second album: What does he need to prove this time around?

EW caught up with American Idol season 8 winner Kris Allen on the Trevor Live red carpet this weekend, and the singer told us that he is hard at work on his second album, a follow-up to his 2009 self-titled release.

“We’ve moved past the writing process mostly and have moved onto the recording portion,” Allen says. “I’ve been working a lot with Tim Pagnotta, who produced and wrote some of the last Neon Trees album.”

The singer says that he’s particularly excited about a new track called “Out Alive,” which he believes “has possible single potential,” though it’s too soon to tell.

Allen has a quite a bit to prove with his sophomore post-Idol record. The charming but decidedly low-key songster’s debut sold about 329,000 copies (less than half of season 8 runner-up Adam Lambert’s For Your Entertainment), and it only spawned one real hit: the Script cover “Live Like We’re Dying.” (Although, if you ask me, his reggae-tinged Idol coronation song could have been pretty popular if they’d actually released it as a single.)

Other Idol winners who have earned lackluster sales — like Lee DeWyze, Ruben Studdard, and Taylor Hicks — have been unceremoniously dropped from their labels, but RCA/Jive must see something in Allen to give him this second chance. Recording a full album is not a cheap affair, but I do have to wonder whether Allen’s sales will justify the financial commitment.

What do you think? Has the buzz around Kris Allen worn off, or are you still excited about the onetime champ? What do you want to hear on his new album? And will he ever be able to achieve sales on the level of say, fellow Idol Scotty McCreery?

Ozzy Osbourne, Scott Ian, and 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin to make fun of Zakk Wylde at inaugural 'Rock & Roll Roast'

I’m not saying Zakk Wylde has a stupid name but…

Actually, I’m not saying anything bad about the hairy metal fretmeister at all. Instead, I’m going to leave that to Ozzy Osbourne, Scott Ian from Anthrax, pro wrestler “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, and comedian Jim Norton, all of whom will be taking verbal aim at Wylde in the course of Guitar World magazine’s inaugural “Rock & Roll Roast.”

The event is set to take place at the Grove in Anaheim, Calif., on Jan. 19, with proceeds going to the MusiCares charity. Sharon Osbourne will act as roastmaster. “Zakk has always called me his mom, but I think my boy needs a good kicking,” said Osbourne, in what could loosely be described as “a statement.”

You can check out the (foul-mouthed) trailer for Wylde’s roast below. READ FULL STORY »

John Rich's Las Vegas trip ends in being thrown off a Southwest flight

John Rich likes to have a good time. You can hear it in his music and you can see it in his television appearances. And apparently you can smell it on his breath, as some employees of Southwest Airlines found out.

On Sunday night, Rich was at the airport in Las Vegas intending on returning to his home in Nashville, but he was deemed unfit to fly and was escorted off the plane before it took off.

“Our crew assessed the situation and determined that the passenger was not fit for travel,” airline representative Christi McNeill said in a statement. “Our employees are responsible for the safety and comfort of everyone on board a flight. If we can mitigate an uncomfortable situation prior to departure, it is our preference to do so, and that is what happened in this scenario.” Translation: Rich enjoyed himself a little too much while in Vegas, and carried the party with him all the way up to the departure gate.

There were some reports that Rich had gotten into an altercation with another passenger before takeoff, though Rich’s publicist denied that such an incident occurred. The airline booked him a new flight, though Rich chose to find an alternate route home. In the end, Southwest even gave him a refund. Sporting!

Rich joins a surprisingly eclectic list of celebrities who found themselves unwelcome on Southwest flights for a multitude of unusual reasons, including The L Word actress Leisha Hailey (booted for making out with her girlfriend), Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong (shown the door because his pants were saggy), and film director Kevin Smith (rejected for being too fat).

Is Southwest hostile to famous people, or should these folks simply be relying on charter companies and private jets like normal everyday superstars? There’s no such thing as too drunk on a private jet, you know.
