If you’re anything like us, you’ve been sick of Christmas music for weeks now. Sure, ’tis the season and all, but you can only take so many renditions of “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” before you have to crank up some Mastodon to wash it all away.

But as My Chemical Romance has proven, there is still room for some new seasonal tunes. The New Jersey band will be appearing on a special episode of psychedelic kids’ show Yo Gabba Gabba!, titled “A Very Awesome Christmas.”

They’ll be performing a tune called “Every Snowflake Is Different (Just Like You),” a bouncy, bombastic little rock tune that wouldn’t have been all that out of place on the band’s woefully underrated 2010 album Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys.

With the band dressed in colorful ski gear, “Every Snowflake Is Different” celebrates uniqueness while also turning up the volume and building a healthy post-emo stomp. You can check out the exclusive video premiere of the band’s performance on the show below. READ FULL STORY »

Jason Aldean led the pack with six ACA wins

Country music’s newest superstar won six awards Monday in Las Vegas, including the night’s top honors artist of the year and record of the year for “My Kinda Party.”

It’s true, 2010 has been a non-stop party for Aldean. More than a million fans turned out for his arena tour, his platinum album has spawned four hits so far and the awards are starting to pile up after years of being ignored.

“This is getting a little ridiculous now,” Aldean said on his second visit to the stage. “I don’t know what else to say. It’s been a crazy year.” READ FULL STORY »

George is the Beatle most horrified by Ke$ha

A rabble-rouser on Buzzfeed got thousands of people outraged today with this list of 12 Extremely Disappointing Facts About Popular Music. The one below struck me as the most visually disturbing. Why didn’t Photoshop melt down as a drunk and disorderly Muppets extra was placed next to The Beatles? Does the answer lie in the space between Ke$sha’s boobs? So many questions.

I’ve come up with a way to cope, though: Imagine that all of the Beatles are facially reacting to the horror show at their right. Ringo is being so polite and cautious about it, probably because he’s the closest to the danger. John is willfully oblivious, while Paul looks just slightly more dead inside than Ke$ha. George wins this stinkface competition by a long and winding mile. (I feel like he’d also take the most convincing Facebook self-portraits in iPhoto. I hate myself!)

See? It’s easy if you try. Feel better now? [Buzzfeed]

The Band Perry's debut album goes platinum. Great! Perhaps now those brothers can get new haircuts?

After 59 weeks on the chart, The Band Perry’s self-titled debut album was just certified platinum for shipments of 1 million copies.

Thanks to their country-gothic crossover smash “If I Die Young,” which hit number one on the country chart in December 2010 and then rose to number one on the adult contemporary chart eleven months later, their album has sold steadily over the past year. But a recent slew of CMA Awards wins, as well as a Best New Artist Grammy nomination have given the sibling trio a new boost. READ FULL STORY »

Adele's '21' now officially the best-selling UK album of the 21st century

adele

Adele is still recovering from throat surgery, but that hasn’t stopped 21 from continuing its tear through the record books.

After picking up a half dozen Grammy nominations last week, 21 also officially became the best-selling album in the UK in the 21st century. In doing so, it eclipsed Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black, which has shifted 3.3 million copies since its release in 2006. 21, meanwhile, has moved 3.4 million copies in less than a year, a pretty remarkable feat in the current music-business climate.

What’s even more amazing is the number of high-profile homegrown acts who have released albums in the UK in the past 11 years who still haven’t sold as many albums as Adele. Considering the length of time the albums have been out, and the stature of the artists involved, you would think that U2′s All That You Can’t Leave Behind, Coldplay’s A Rush of Blood to the Head, or Radiohead’s Kid A would be contenders for the sales crown. In fact, the only other album from the 21st century that has put up Adele- and Winehouse-sized numbers is James Blunt’s 2004 debut Back to Bedlam (which was notable for its inclusion of “You’re Beautiful,” easily one of the most polarizing radio hits of the modern era).

If she can keep up the same kind of momentum, Adele could find herself in striking distance of some all-time sales figures in her homeland. She’s right behind the biggest-selling albums of all time there, which include Queen’s Greatest Hits, the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Oasis’ (What’s the Story?) Morning Glory, and ABBA’s ABBA Gold. That’s some pretty rare company, and it’s incredible to think that those albums have had decades to accumulate the kinds of numbers Adele has done in less than twelve months.

Are you surprised at Adele’s dominance, or is it merely one more clear victory for the critical and commercial behemoth that is 21? Let us know your thoughts in the comments, and tell us: What’s your favorite British album of the 21st century? I’m partial to Jarvis Cocker’s debut solo album, but that’s because I’m kind of weird.

Madonna debuts new song 'Masterpiece' -- and we might like it

Madonna has been off the musical radar for a while, but she’s getting an early start on her expected reign over 2012. She’s officially performing at the Super Bowl, and there’s also a new song called “Masterpiece” that is slated to be included on both her upcoming new album as well as the soundtrack to her film W.E.

The version streaming online sounds a little hollow, but overall “Masterpiece” is an uncluttered presentation that recalls the Material Girl’s outre mid-’90s period, which saw the birth of an eclectic batch of hits like “I’ll Remember” and “Take a Bow.” Both of those songs share a certain vibe with “Masterpiece,” which has the same kind of moody, direct energy and sound. Madge’s voice sounds particularly sharp, without distracting digital correction.

All in all, it’s pretty gorgeous, and quite a ways away from the four-on-the-floor club tracks that have littered her previous two albums Hard Candy and Confessions on a Dance Floor. Give “Masterpiece” a spin here.

Taylor Swift is the girl in the cubicle next door in her new video for 'Ours': Watch it here

Country’s platinum cutie goes for full sweetness in the new video for “Ours,” a bonus song off Speak Now.

An ode to love conquering all isn’t exactly a departure for Swift, but instead of fairy-tale princesses and sparkly dresses, she’s rocking the corporate-commuter look, with messy hair (new bangs!) and tennis shoes — and an iPad for sending love messages out during during office hours. Her life is in shades of gray — from the elevator to the break room, they’re all drones — except for the fun, brightly colored memories when she is with her man (that would be Friday Night Lights star Zach Gilford).

Kudos to Swift for putting out a slightly more adult, more realistic video that still captures that butterflies-in-your-stomach, crazy-in-love tone that she is so famous for.

Confirming a not-so-well-kept secret, the NFL and NBC announced today during tonight’s Detroit Lions-New Orleans Saints game that Madonna will indeed be the featured performer at the Super Bowl XLVI half-time show on Feb. 5 in Indianapolis.

The 53-year-old Material Girl — whose romantic drama W.E. just happens to be hitting theaters two days before the game — will collaborate with Cirque du Soleil and Jamie King for the big gig. She is currently recording an album that’s slated to be released in 2012.

The Black Eyed Peas performed at last year’s Super Bowl, while the Who headlined the 2010 half-time show. The news of Madonna taking on the biggest night in television had been rumored since October.
