The music portion of the annual South By Southwest Festival doesn’t officially get started until tomorrow — which is when EW will officially touch down in Austin for sleepless wall-to-wall coverage — but the grooves got started on Monday night with the arrival of arguably the biggest star of the week.
After getting some assistance from a police escort to get him to the venue on time (his flight was delayed), Jay-Z took over the 2,800 person capacity Austin City Limits to tear through a heated 90-minute set streamed live online. Show highlights included a rousing “Dirt Off Your Shoulder” and the Blue Ivy-inspired “Glory,” which he dedicated to the parents in the audience.
Check out a fan-shot performance of “99 Problems” below, or you can just stream the whole thing (complete with multiple camera angles) at the official American Express YouTube site.
Stay tuned for a boatload of coverage live from the streets of Austin featuring performances by titans (Bruce Springsteen, 50 Cent) and up-and-comers (Alabama Shakes, Tanlines, Kimbra) alike.
