The guest list for Wednesday night’s Revolver Golden Gods Awards wasn’t particularly glamorous, as it featured mostly stars from the heavy metal community. There was one exception, however, as Johnny Depp — he of Hollywood red carpets and “Sexiest Man in the World” awards — dropped in to share the stage with Marilyn Manson on a run through the band’s first big hit: a cover of Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This).”
Depp began the song on stage at Los Angeles’ Nokia Theater rather incognito, but frontman Manson gave away his special guest. “If you don’t recognize my personal friend, my personal savior, my personal guitar hero, Johnny Depp!” he told the crowd.
Check out “Sweet Dreams” below.
The star stuck around for a run through “The Beautiful People” as well. Depp’s guitar chops are well documented: He once recorded with Oasis and was a member of a band called P that also featured members of Butthole Surfers, Ween, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the Sex Pistols. The group was memorialized in the Rentals’ song “Friends of P.” Depp also worked with Rock City Angels before he broke through as an actor.
More importantly, the performance of “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” provides a reminder that Marilyn Manson has a history of excellent covers. The band just did “You’re So Vain” for their new album Born Villain (Depp plays on that one, too), and their takes on Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell on You,” Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus,” and Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love” are all pretty excellent in their own way.
