Maroon 5 have officially accomplished the rare feat of having not one but two singles in the Top 10 of Billboard‘s Hot 100 this week.
Although their smash “Payphone” is on its way down after peaking at No. 2 (this week it dropped from No. 5 to No. 7), their followup “One More Night” has wasted no time ascending the upper tiers of the chart. This week “Night” jumps 15-9, following major gains at radio and 170,000 additional downloads.
The two hit singles are driving album sales for the band’s fourth album Overexposed, which grew 59 percent to 36,000 copies this week — a $3.99 sale on Amazon also boosted sales substantially — and moved from No. 11 to No. 5 on the Billboard 200. The disc has moved 450,000 copies after eight weeks on the chart.
We’ll find out if “One More Night” can climb one spot higher than “Payphone” in the weeks to come, but for now, let’s check out the week’s other chart winners and losers below:
Taylor Swift: The pop-country diva, whose certainly leaning more on the pop side these days, sold 623,000 downloads of her fizzy breakup anthem “We Are Never Ever getting Back Together,” which hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 this week — a first for Swift. 2 Chainz: The breakout rapper’s debut album Based on a T.R.U. Story bowed atop the albums chart with sales of 147,000, including 61,000 digital copies. As Yahoo’s Paul Grein notes, that makes 2 Chainz the first hip-hop artist to hit No. 1 with a debut album since Mac Miller’s Blue Side Park reached the summit in November. 2 Chainz has found singles success with Kanye-collab “Mercy” as well as “No Lie,” which features Drake. Both songs hit No. 1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
Justin Bieber: The well-coiffed teen scored his fourth Top 10 single this week when “As Long As You Love Me,” which features Big Sean, rose from No. 12 to No. 8 and added 145,000 downloads to its tally. His album Believe, already one of the best-selling discs of the year, increased 16 percent this week and jumped from No. 7 to No. 6. It has sold 784,000 copies total.
Alex Clare: We’ve gotta hand it to Clare — it ain’t easy to make Internet Explorer look cool, but after a national ad campaign for the web browser featured “Too Close,” the song has found solid life at radio and on the digital songs chart, where it’s already been certified platinum. This week, the UK singer’s first charting single jumps into the Top 20 for the first time.
Hunter Hayes: The Nashville wunderkind looked like he might not be able to match the success of his breakout single “Storm Warning,” which hit No. 14 on the Country Songs chart last year and earned him a slew of attention. But despite a slow start, Hayes’ lovelorn sophomore effort, “Wanted” has become a hit. This week, it climbs 10-8 on the Country Songs chart, and it’s proving a crossover success as well. The ballad bumped up from No. 34 to No. 29 on the all-genre Hot 100.
Matchbox Twenty: You may not have heard, but the 90s staples are back with a new single, “She’s So Mean,” and though it’s not garnering sales at Taylor Swift-levels, it’s consistently climbing up the Hot 100. Rob Thomas and co. cruised from No. 58 to No. 49 this week, while singles from fellow 90s acts No Doubt and Green Day are foundering. Of course the same fate could befall Matchbox 20, but right now, things are looking up.
Kelly Clarkson: “Mr. Know It All” was a solid hit. “Stronger” was a bona fide smash, reaching the top spot on the charts. But the third single from Stronger, “Dark Side,” is struggling. After climbing to No. 42 last week, it slipped to No. 45 in its ninth week.
Lana Del Rey: She may have garnered a tsunami of release buzz online, but her highest ranking single, “Video Games” only reached No. 91 on the chart. None of her four followups — “Born to Die,” “Blue Jeans,” “Summertime Sadness,” or most recently, “National Anthem” — have charted on the Hot 100. Good thing she recently inked lucrative sponsorship deals with H+M and Jaguar.
Karmin: Their platinum single “Brokenhearted” reached No. 16 on the Hot 100, suggesting that the YouTube duo might be poised for pop-world stardom, but new single “Hello” isn’t proving as infectious — at least not immediately. The song hit radio on July 31, but it still hasn’t said “Hello” to any rankings above No. 118.
