Green Day and Alanis Morissette are kindred spirits in a way. Both broke big when their third albums — 1994’s Dookie and 1995’s Jagged Little Pill – became smash successes at around the same time, so it makes sense that Morissette would want to make a public show of support for the beleaguered Billie Joe Armstrong.
“I’ve always been an advocate and supporter of artists and Billie Joe, to me, he deserves to be bowed down to,” Morissette told Billboard after covering Green Day’s ’95 hit “Basket Case” on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “He’s been in this industry for a long time and so for him to experience the consequence of a system that kind of set it up for him to fail is a travesty to me.”
“I think he’s braver than I am,” she added. “We’re all figuring it out, so let’s just support the fragile artist.”

What’d you think? Even if you didn’t like it, cut her some slack: “We learned it like 11 minutes before we went on,” she told Billboard. “It was super spontaneous.”
