Australian rapper Iggy Azalea has been on the come-up for a while now, thanks to a series of blog-baiting videos and the heavy support of label boss T.I. (and also picking up a modeling contract along the way).
The march toward the release of her official debut album The New Classic continues with the video for “Work,” which finds Azalea invoking Thelma & Louise, rapping in front of a tractor trailer, and, like she does, wearing a full run of frame-grab-worthy outfits (rarely have a pair of spandex palm trees worked so hard to preserve a lady’s decency).
Watch it below:
Back when Iggy Azalea and Azealia Banks first showed up on the rap scene — and were not outwardly feuding — it was easy to lump them together: Both were female rappers with similar names who debuted at about the same time during a period when a massive stockpile of female MCs seemed ready to take over the pop landscape in the wake of Nicki Minaj’s success.
At the time, it felt like Banks would be the big breakout star, but she hasn’t done a whole lot beyond lording over a forever-delayed album and attacking people on Twitter since throwing down the gauntlet on the instant classic “212.” Azalea’s ascent has been more gradual and way more under the radar, even as she’s quietly racked up multiple videos with million-plus pageview counts.
In the meantime, heavily buzzed 2012 names like K. Flay, Angel Haze, and Brianna Perry have yet to set the world on fire, and there’s still a void left by Minaj’s seeming defection to mainstream pop and profesional Idol-hood.
So we turn the question to you, readers; is there a female rapper out there right now that you think has what it takes to be the next great hope for hip hop? Is either Azeal(i)(e)a that girl? Let us know in the comments.
