MTV is set to make history later this year when it brings its annual celebration of music videos to Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. The 2013 Video Music Awards will be the first major annual award show to take place in the borough of Brooklyn, MTV announced today.
The VMAs got its start in the Big Apple — the first show was in New York’s Radio City Music Hall in 1984 — but for the past three years, the show has been in Downtown Los Angeles, also relocating to Las Vegas, Miami, and back to Radio City Music Hall during its 29-year history.
“From hip-hop to hipsters, Jay Z to MGMT, Brooklyn musicians have a long history of dominating the spotlight on MTV,” Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz said in a statement. “Bravo to MTV on a decision that hits all the right notes and strikes all the right chords.”
Barclays Center is a new indoor arena that opened in September 2012 and is now home to the Brooklyn Nets. The 2013 VMAs will take place on August 25.
