One of the great ongoing narratives in the music world is the continued success of Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP 2 which has kept moving big units since its release last November, without very much promotion or fanfare. But when Eminem does come out of hiding to plug a new single, he does it in the biggest ways possible.
Slim Shady dropped the new video for his single “Headlights” yesterday — and the Mother’s Day premiere date was appropriate; in “Headlights,” Em appears to give absolution to the mother he has railed against regularly over the course of his career.
The clip, directed by Spike Lee, is shot entirely from the perspective of Eminem’s mom and finds her watching old videos in which she is lampooned, then trying to visit her son as his palatial estate. They ultimately embrace in an event that, according to the lyrics, actually happened.
It’s probably the sweetest thing Eminem has ever done, and will probably choke you up just a little bit, especially if you neglected to call your mother yesterday.
Eminem will be on the road this summer, both with Rihanna and as a festival headliner.
