It wasn’t the song, or the Brazilian culture-themed choreography, or even another revealing green getup worn by Jennifer Lopez that stole the show during Thursday’s World Cup opening ceremony. No, everyone was talking about Pitbull’s pants.

Maybe it’s because the sound quality inside the Corinthians Arena in Sao Paulo was so terrible — why bother paying attention to the performance when you can’t tell what Pitbull, J. Lo, and Brazilian star Claudia Leitte are actually singing? (For the record, the trio performed the World Cup’s official song, “We Are One (Ole Ola),” but that was only decipherable when the crowd joined in the “Ole Ola” chorus.)

And so everyone’s attention turned to the stars themselves. Leitte is an unknown in the States and didn’t register with most viewers here; Lopez wore a shimmery leotard that was nothing out of the ordinary for the pop star. But Pitbull — his high-waisted, cropped white pants left everyone scratching their heads.

His sartorial choice was referred to as “diaper pants” and “mom capris.” “Did they not have a sparkly leotard in Pitbull’s size?” tweeted one viewer. “The biggest issue in Brazil isnt drugs, violence, or corruption. Its Pitbull’s high waisted pants,” tweeted another.

Was his choice of trousers really that bad? Jump to the 18-minute mark to check out the infamous pants — and the singers’ performance — in the clip below:
