Kevin Hart at the VMAs: How did he do?

Last year at the VMAs, Bieber-sized comedian Kevin Hart stole the show with his ceremony-opening comedy routine.

This year, MTV made him the emcee for the whole event.

During his opening monologue, Hart didn’t really skewer any celebs — except for Russell Brand (“Two years! How did that happen?” he asked of the Brit’s multi-year VMA hosting gig) — but he did offer his take on various pop culture events of the last few months.

On Drake and Chris Brown’s bar brawl: “Here’s what you don’t know about Drake,” said Hart. “Drake is from Canada. He loves to recycle…” Hart explained that the only reason Drake allegedly threw a bottle across the bar was because he was trying to throw it into a recycling bin. When it allegedly hit Chris Brown, Hart says that Drake explained he was aiming for “the bin,” but Brown heard him say, “Bitch.”

On Snooki’s new baby, Lorenzo: Hart said he was glad Snooki finally gave birth, since she’d had her baby “in the oven” for so long. Not that the heat should matter too much. “You’ve been cookin your skin for a while,” quipped Hart.

On Kristen Stewart’s cheating scandal: Hart joked that, following Kristen Stewart’s alleged affair with Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders, a new dwarf joined the block. “Look, we’ve got Sleepy, Grumpy, Adultery,” he said. Still, Hart said that people shouldn’t be too hard on her: “Everybody’s mad at Kristen Stewart for making a mistake… If she did, so what? It’s over. Move on.”

All in all, it wasn’t a particularly funny opening. Hart mostly told stories — like his fairly lame account of why Frank Ocean came out — but kept light on jokes. Still, he’s indisputably excited to be there, and kept the opening brisk, which is always good. Plus, the guy gets major points for willingly standing next to the towering Dwight Howard.

Tonight, Carly Rae Jepsen could conceivably beat Frank Ocean and One Direction for Best New Artist. Taylor Swift may very well bring a chorus of Kennedys to sing backup when she performs a top-secret song from her new album. And 2 Chainz might wear more than two chains around his neck.

Truly, anything is possible at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards. That’s why EW’s Adam Markovitz and Darren Franich will be live-blogging the whole event to make sure no miniature pop-culture milestone goes unremarked. Tune in to the VMAs pre-show at 7 pm ET and come back to this post at 7:30 for our expert commentary, complete with trivia, snap-judgment polls and a deep philosophical debate about the semantics of Rihanna’s “Cockiness.” See you there!

The 2012 MTV VMAs: Seven questions going into the show

About 20 years ago, everybody made the same joke: “How can MTV have a Video Music Awards when they don’t air videos anymore?” (And in our comments section, people still make that same joke every year.)

But think about it, has the show ever been about the actual Moonmen as much as it is about the zeitgeisty memes, outsized personalities, and general pageantry of the broadcast?

Think about last year’s show: While everybody remembers the Beyoncé baby-bump reveal, Lady Gaga’s drag show, and Adele’s tear-jerking triumph, does anybody recall what clip won Video of the Year? (It was Katy Perry’s “Firework.”) This year’s show, which beams live from Los Angeles’ massive Staples Center Thursday night at 8 PM Eastern, prides itself on first-run moments, including new tracks from Green Day and Alicia Keys and the first live performances of new singles by Taylor Swift and Pink.

But since there’s not a whole lot of investment in the winner of Best Male Video (unless you literally have invested something with your local bookie), here are the seven questions you should keep on your mind if you tune in. (And even if you don’t, you’re still invited to hang out with the Music Mix tomorrow evening, as we’ll have a live blog, photo galleries, and a full breakdown of the show’s best performances and biggest moments.)

How will host Kevin Hart do?
The VMAs have had some pretty big names host the show before, though there have really only been a handful of memorable ones (see: Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, and pre-Fox News Dennis Miller). In the last few years, the role of host has been either ignored completely (neither the 2011 or 2007 shows had hosts) or given to people ill-suited for the job (Russell Brand, Chelsea Handler, and Jack Black all sort of punted it). 'American Idol' alum Colton Dixon signs with EMI, readies new single 'You Are'

UPDATE: “You Are” will hit radio on October 19. Colton’s album will drop in Feburary 2013.

ORIGINALLY: He may have come in seventh place during Season 11 of American Idol, but angsty belter Colton Dixon has nabbed a record deal — and his disc could even hit stores well before the reported January release of Idol winner Phillip Phillips’ debut album.

Dixon announced today on his YouTube channel that he has signed with EMI/CMG (that’s Christian Music Group) under the Sparrow Records moniker, which is already home to fellow Idol alum, Mandisa, as well as the chart powerhouse Chris Tomlin.

Dixon’s soon-to-be released single is called “You Are,” and he describes it as a “worship song.” Though audio for the track is not yet available, Dixon has been performing an original song, “Never Gone,” on the Idols LIVE! tour, which he says will be available on iTunes Sept. 25.

The publicly (and to some viewers, too outpokenly) Christian artist, who never saw a pair of skinny jeans or combat boots he didn’t love, scored high marks with the judges for his sensitive rocker piano-infused takes on songs like Billy Joel’s “Piano Man,” Paramore’s “Decode,” and Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie.” Still, after a week of competition during which Colton sang Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” and Earth, Wind, and Fire’s “September” (he later apologized to fans for not staying true to himself), he was eliminated, despite having never before appeared in the bottom 3.

Check out Colton’s announcement below: READ FULL STORY »

Taylor Swift's 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together' new music video -- watch it here

Go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, spread the news, people: Taylor Swift’s music video for her new hit single, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” is live.

The video — which starts off with Swift clad in squirrel-print pajamas – follows the lyrics video for the same song that came out August 14, and premiered simultaneously on MTV and CMT Thursday night during a mini-special called “MTV First: Taylor Swift.” The show also included an interview with the 22-year-old musician. West coasters eager to see TSwift on the tube, can still see the video and interview when it airs at 7:49 p.m. PT.

In the interview, which continued via live stream on MTV.com, the country pop princess announced that she will perform “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 6.

“What the fans have done with this song and made it into in two weeks is so great, so I’m so excited to perform it at the VMAs,” Swift said during the MTV interview.

To watch the song accompanied by plenty of black-framed glasses, a party in a house with sweater-like walls and Swift’s band members in forest-animal costumes, check out the music video below:

'American Idol' runner up Jessica Sanchez announces she's signed to Interscope, performs new song 'Fairytale'

American Idol runner up Jessica Sanchez, the powerhouse diva-in-training who almost got eaten by Jennifer Holliday once upon a time, made a big announcement at the iHeartRadio American Idol tour stop in New York City last night.

“After the show, I got signed to Interscope Records,” she said.

The news isn’t all that surprising. Interscope has first dibs on all the Idol kids, and Jimmy Iovine wasn’t about to let a voice like Sanchez’s out the door.

More surprising, though, was the fact that Sanchez debuted a new song called “Fairytale” for the crowd. The track has less of a sassy, urban feel than expected considering how frequently Sanchez has expressed her desire to head in that direction musically, but it is a young, bouncy pop ditty that feels about a million times more legit than her potential Idol coronation “Change Nothing.” Still, it sounds awfully generic.

New 'Breaking Bad' original soundtrack coming next week - EXCLUSIVE

Most television dramas tend to deliver their biggest emotional cues via borrowed pop and rock songs. Breaking Bad is one of the few that draws much of its impact from its original score, constructed by composer Dave Porter.

The ASCAP award winner (not to be confused with this musical David Porter) has become known for building Bad‘s tension and whimsy depending on what situation Walter White has gotten himself into on any given week.

Next Tuesday, August 28, Madison Gate Records will release Breaking Bad: Original Score From the Television Series, the second soundtrack from the show which features 20 tracks from all five seasons of the show.

Check out the exclusive track listing and give a listen to an exclusive sample from the score below. (You can also preorder the album on iTunes here): READ FULL STORY »

Jonas Brothers reuniting for one-night-only concert

Image credit: Matt Stroshane/Disney via Getty Images

The huge Jonas Brothers-shaped void in our hearts will soon be filled, temporarily, that is. The trio is reuniting on stage for the first time in three years for a one-night-only concert.

Aside from their string of hits, the band will also debut songs from their upcoming album (to be released next year) during their Oct. 11 performance at Radio City Music Hall. This is the only performance slated for the entire year.

“Over the last three years, we’ve all had life changing experiences — both individually and as a group,” Nick said in a press release. “Those experiences allowed us to create new music that we are really proud of and excited to share with our fans.”

Despite the brothers’ respite from the stage, they have kept busy with other ventures — mainly reality TV shows. Joe is a judge on the new CW music competition The Next (which debuted yesterday), while Kevin and his wife Danielle are starring in the aptly-titled E! reality series Married to Jonas (debuting on Sunday). Joe was also one of the bachelors looking for love on this summer’s Fox celebrity dating show The Choice.  Nick and Joe will make appearances on Kevin’s show, but there are no scheduled cameos yet from Kevin and Joe on The Next. That’s too bad, the trio could put their powers together to become Super Coach.

Nicki Minaj brings 'Starships' to 'Today' show: Watch it here

Call it a Pink Tuesday?

The hyperactive blond alien we earthlings refer to as Nicki Minaj landed her spaceship in the Today show’s Rockefeller Center studios for a live outdoor performance this morning. Decked in a red skintight number and golden tresses, she and her cadre of shirtless backup dancers bounced around on stage during their live rendition of “Starships.”

The show was exactly as bonkers as you might expect, particularly when Minaj descended into the youthful crowd and elicited one of those scream frenzies that makes moms litigious.

Check out Minaj’s Today show appearance in the clip below:
