Karmin get ready for 'SNL,' preview their new album

Less than a year ago, Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan posted a video of the two of them performing Chris Brown’s “Look At Me Now.”

That video set the Internet ablaze — the “Look At Me” has racked up over 56 million views — and the cult of Karmin began to build. The rest of the narrative goes like this: More videos (both covers and original tunes), a handful of high-profile performances (including an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show), a record contract, and a booking on this weekend’s edition of Saturday Night Live. For many, this will be the first time they’ll hear the group’s original songs.

“We’ve been working with some of the top producers of the world,” Heidemann told EW, of their upcoming debut Hello, due April. “We recorded close to 50 songs, so we’re trying to get that list down to album size.”

One of those songs, the first single “Brokenhearted,” was co-written by Claude Kelly, the hitmaker who has contributed to such tunes as Bruno Mars’ “Grenade,” Jessie J’s “Price Tag,” and Adam Lambert’s “Better Than I Know Myself.” READ FULL STORY »

You won’t have to buy the next issue of People or Us to see the first photos of Blue Ivy: Beyoncé and Jay-Z themselves opted to release photos of their newborn via a Tumblr account. Says a note on the site: “We welcome you to share in our joy.”

But don’t share their joy too much — the site continues, “Thank you for respecting our privacy during this beautiful time in our lives.”

So how does Blue Ivy look? Well, pretty much like every other newborn. But that doesn’t mean she’s still not adorable — and we all wish we looked as good as Mama Beyoncé after giving birth.

A quick sweep of the landscape reveals an Adele teaser clip from 60 Minutes, a planned Tony Bennett tribute, and a preemptively registered Who Is Bon Iver? tumblr. This can only mean one thing: Grammy weekend is upon us!

And of course, we’ll be upon it as well. Join us this Sunday as we report live from the red carpet, backstage, and the Staples Center ceremony itself, and from our online Grammy hub here on the Music Mix, where you’ll find a live blog, a winner’s list updated in real time, and various commentaries from our music staff, as well as a roundup of the night’s best and worst (and of course best-worst) fashions.

Until then, we’ve got lots to think about: Which overpopulated performance will be the night’s messiest? (Probably all of them, but still.) Which artist has the best chance of topping Adele? (Probably none of them, but still.) Will Skrillex actually show up, or will he send one of his many female impostors in his place? Tune in with us, and we’ll find out all the answers together!

Rebecca Black's 'Friday' video turns one today. If only there was some sort of helpful reminder of what today is!

Rebecca-Black_320.jpg

If there hasn’t been a Friday over the last year in which, at some point, you didn’t sing “Gettin’ down on Friday” or “We, we, we so excited” to yourself, then celebrating today’s musical milestone should feel bittersweet.

To be fair, Rebecca Black‘s “Friday” didn’t actually take over our lives — and thus forever alter our knowledge of how the week works (“Yesterday it is Thursday, today it is Friday”) and major decisions like where to sit in our friends’ cars — until March 2011. But the video was actually released one year ago today, Feb. 10, 2011, courtesy of ARK Music Factory. That’s right, it took the Internet almost an entire month to stumble upon this gem.

Here’s some fun, fun, fun, fun facts about Rebecca Black’s “Friday” over the past year:

David Lynch on his new album 'Crazy Clown Time' and first-look photos from his 'psychotic' music video -- EXCLUSIVE

David-Lynch-video1

David Lynch is movie director, television producer, painter, animator, cartoonist, furniture designer, philanthropist, activist, mail order coffee mogul, amateur meteorologist, and several other things all at once.

But like most of us, the award-winning artist behind Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks and Mulholland Drive really just wants to rock. Last fall, the three-time Oscar nominee released Crazy Clown Time (via indy label Play It Again Sam), a strange yet strangely engaging collection of po-mo blues and electro-pop tunes, filled with thumping, grumpy complaints about love gone wrong and at least one stream of consciousness riff on the creative process. And dentistry.

This is, after all, a David Lynch record. One in which you can hear him playing a dirty guitar and singing with an endearingly plaintive, often electronically distorted voice. (Making a guest appearance on one track: Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.)

David-Lynch-video

He also just finished shooting and is currently editing a music video for the title track; in addition to the first look photos here, Lynch offered this tease, via email: “A ‘Crazy Clown Time’ should have an intense psychotic backyard craziness, fueled by beer.” (Well, of course it should.) We recently spoke to the 66-year-old rock and roll surrealist and forever-young Renaissance man about his latest artistic pursuit.

Katy Perry's first single from 'The Complete Confection' to be 'Part of Me': Listen to a snippet here!

Yesterday came the news that Katy Perry would be rereleasing her latest album as a special edition titled Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, complete with three new singles.

Now Perry has announced that the first new song will be “Part of Me,” which will hit radio and retailers on Feb. 21.

The lovelorn ditty — a snippet from which you can find below — fits right into the cohesive, radio-ready pop sounds that were Dream‘s 12 original tracks, five of which — it’s been said but it’s worth restating, honestly –  hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. (She was the first female artist to ever have five No. 1s from the same album, and the second artist ever, after Michael Jackson.)

“Part of Me” — with a chorus that tells a lover that “this is the part of me that you’re never gonna ever take away from me” — seems like it could have fit easily on the album’s original release — it sonically falls somewhere between her most recent single “The One That Got Away” (which stalled at No. 3 on the Hot 100) and the album’s second single, “Teenage Dream.” Teenage Dream is proving to have really, really long legs –lead single “California Gurls” was released in May of 2010(!) — and “Part of Me” could make it run that much further.

In addition to the three new songs, the rerelease of Dream will include all 12 original tracks, as well as versions of “E.T.” featuring Kanye West and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” featuring Missy Elliott, an acoustic version of “The One That Got Away,” and a seven-minute megamix of the album’s six originally released singles. The Complete Confection hits March 27.

For now, though, enjoy a 30-second taste of “Part of Me” here: READ FULL STORY »

Madonna breaks silence on M.I.A.'s middle finger: 'It's such a teenager, irrelevant thing to do'

Since we’re fast approaching the one-week anniversary of Madonna’s Super Bowl halftime show, it might be good to take some time to reflect on the events that transpired on that fateful evening — namely M.I.A.’s finger flash.

Madonna herself kicked things off this morning during her radio chat with Ryan Seacrest, her first interview since the big game.

While most people with Internet connections have already chipped in their two cents on Fingergate, Madge had stayed silent on M.I.A.’s “sneaky move” (Seacrest’s words), instead focusing on the promotional cycle for her upcoming album MDNA (out March 26).

“I was really surprised,” she admitted on On Air With Ryan Seacrest. “I didn’t know anything about it. I wasn’t happy about it.”

“I understand it’s punk rock and everything, but to me there was such a feeling of love and good energy and positivity,” continued Madonna, who ended her performance with a lit-up message touting world peace. “It seemed negative.”

See a teaser clip of the video for Taylor Swift's 'Hunger Games' song 'Safe and Sound'

Bruce Springsteen hires new sax players, releases video for 'We Take Care of Our Own': Watch it here

Filed under: Music and tagged: , , ,

A few weeks ago, Bruce Springsteen announced his triumphant return with news of a new album called Wrecking Ball, another massive tour in support of said record, and a fresh single called “We Take Care of Our Own.”

Today brings the new video for “We Take Care,” which puts Springsteen by himself (no other E Streeters appear) alternately on a rooftop and stomping through locations from The Wrestler. It’s pretty basic, but it gets the point across.

Really, the strangest aspect of the video is the fact that the lyrics run over the action. It’s not like his mumbling through Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” a video that needed subtitles so badly that MTV actually added them during select airings.

Regardless, Springsteen’s passion for the song and the sentiment comes through in the clip, so get caught up in his stirring people-first patriotism below: READ FULL STORY »
