Dave Grohl to memorialize 'dumpy' studio Sound City in new documentary

As reported in Entertainment Weekly’s special music issue last month, Foo Fighters frontman and erstwhile Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl is working on a documentary about the legendary L.A. recording studio Sound City. The film, titled Sound City, does not have an official release date yet.

The recently shuttered facility was ground zero for iconic rock albums from Fleetwood Mac’s self-titled 1975 classic to Nirvana’s Nevermind. But as Grohl told EW last fall, Sound City was hardly a palace worthy of rock stars.

“I thought we were coming down to some fancy-ass Hollywood studio,” Grohl said during a conversation about the 20th anniversary of the release of Nevermind last September. “But Sound City was not a fancy studio at all. It was this dumpy place in Van Nuys. It was just a f—ing incredible board with an incredible drum room.”

The board in question was built by Neve specifically for Sound City, and just before the studio closed last year, Grohl bought the board and had it moved to his own facility in Northridge. It was sitting in the middle of the floor of the room we were in during the interview, an ancient hulking piece of analogue metal with cords sticking out of it.

Grohl said he planned to install it in his studio, hoping to harness the same magic that went into Nevermind as well as classics like Tom Petty’s Damn the Torpedoes and Cheap Trick’s Heaven Tonight (both of which he mentioned during the interview).

What do you think of the idea of Dave Grohl: Filmmaker? And what’s your favorite Sound City album?

Album Sales: Jack White's 'Blunderbuss' debuts at No. 1; The Wanted can't compete with One Direction

Jack-White

After records with the White Stripes, the Raconteurs, and the Dead Weather, Jack White released his first solo record this week  — and earned the first no. 1 album of his career.

Blunderbuss entered the Billboard 200 at the top with sales of 138,000. That was enough to put him ahead of new debuts from Lee Brice, Kip Moore, and The Wanted, whose EP couldn’t overtake the seventh-week sales of “rivals” One Direction.

Here’s how the chart shook out:

1. Jack White, Blunderbuss, 138,000
Although the former White Stripes mastermind has had eight albums reach the Top 10, his best chart position until now came in 2007, when The Stripes’ Icky Thump debuted (and peaked) in second place.

2. Adele, 21, 84,000
After 62 weeks on the chart, Adele’s blockbuster album, the fourth-best selling in the last ten years, has now sold over 8.9 million copies and is still going strong. Even if it trails a bit in the months to come, it’s pretty much guaranteed to reach diamond certification for sales of 10 million copies. Whether any other album can ever reach those heights remains to be seen; only three albums have sold more in the last decade: Norah Jones’s Come Away With Me (10,797,000), Eminem’s The Eminem Show (10,049,000), and Usher’s Confessions (9,968,000).

3. Lionel Richie, Tuskegee, 78,000
In its fifth week, Lionel Richie’s country collaboration album dipped from 1 to 3 and has now sold an impressive 612,000 copies. Perhaps Richie’s renewed cachet in the music biz is why he suddenly realized he has too many “personal scheduling conflicts” to be a part of ABC’s summer reality series Duets. (John Legend has stepped in to replace him.)

4. One Direction, Up All Night, 50,000
The U.K. boy banders’ breakout, which started with 176,000 copies in March, ticked up from 5-4 this week. After seven frames on the chart, the group’s debut has sold 541,000 copies. While their single “What Makes You Beautiful” has been downloaded less than The Wanted’s “Glad You Came” (1.8 million vs. 2.2 million downloads), they have the clear bragging rights when it comes to album sales.

5. Lee Brice, Hard 2 Love, 46,000
The country singer’s sophomore release improved upon his 2010 debut, Love Like Crazy, which peaked at No. 44 in 2010. His single “A Woman Like You” recently hit No. 1 on the Country Songs chart.

6. Kip Moore, Up All Night, 37,000
That’s right, there’s another Up All Night on the chart — and it beat The Wanted, too! The “Something ‘Bout a Truck” singer  launched his debut country album into sixth place. “Truck” currently sits at No. 9 on the Country Songs chart.

7. The Wanted, The Wanted, 34,000
Maybe calling Christina Aguilera a “total bitch” wasn’t such a hot idea. The British boy band’s seven-song EP (their U.S. debut) didn’t sell as well as many prognosticators expected, especially given the blockbuster success of their Ibiza-tinged single “Glad You Came.” Although the single hasn’t left the Top 5 of the Hot 100 for the past nine weeks, their self-titled collection sold less than 1/5th of One Direction’s Up All Night first-week sales (they clocked 176,000). Perhaps The Wanted will go the route of acts like the Black Eyed Peas, whose dancey singles set radio and iTunes on fire, but don’t move many albums. Or perhaps fans are just waiting for a full-length album to pull the trigger. We’ll find out when the band release their LP in the fall.

8. Nicki Minaj, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, 32,000
In its fourth week, Minaj’s sophomore set fell from 6 to 9 (-33 percent) and has now sold 413,000 total copies. But with her newly released video for “Starships,” sales may stabilize in the weeks to come.

9. Gotye, Making Mirrors, 32,000
His breakthrough single “Somebody That I Used To Know” (featuring Kimbra) is still selling strong, returning to the No. 1 spot on the Hot Digital songs chart this week. The Belgian-born, Australia-raised star has now spent four weeks in the Top 10.

10. Jason Mraz, Love Is A Four Letter Word, 29,000
After a No. 2 debut last week, the super-chill “I Won’t Give Up” singer’s album suffered a 71 percent drop.

What do you think of this week’s chart? Did you pick up any of these albums?

Spotify debuts its iPad app

SPOTIFY-IPAD

Listen up, Spotify-heads: the music-streaming service has announced the launch of its iPad app today.

The app, which will be available in the iPad App Store beginning at 7 a.m. today, will be free to download for existing Spotify users with premium accounts. Like the desktop and smartphone versions, the iPad app will also be available to non-subscribers, also free but with ads.

The new app will carry mostly similar features as the Spotify’s desktop version as well as a number of new ones, including gapless playback, the ability to crossfade songs, and AirPlay integration with Bluetooth-enabled speaker systems.

One of the more notable new features is the improved “Now Playing” screen, which offers fullscreen view of high-definition cover art. The reasoning is that this will look prettier in your living room, where Spotify hopes it will be able to replace your traditional home stereo system.

Take a look at the YouTube ad for the company’s shiny new toy in the video below:

Florence and the Machine, Beach Boys, Flo Rida, and more occupy our weekly Spotify playlist

Florence-Machine-Welch

Summer’s almost here, and it shows in our latest Spotify playlist.

Flo Rida’s “Whistle” will get stuck in your head the way sand gets stuck between your toes, while the eternal surfer dudes in the Beach Boys reunite for “That’s Why God Made the Radio,” the band’s first new song in 20 years. As for the British boy band the Wanted, “Chasing the Sun” proves that they’re just as good at making music as they are at making trouble.

Also chillin’ on the mix are EW favorites like Florence and the Machine (whose new track will pop up on the Snow White and the Huntsman soundtrack), Nas, Wiz Khalifa, and more.

Check it all out in our newest Spotify playlist below!

Carrie Underwood performs new song 'Cupid's Got a Shotgun,' talks husband and vocab lessons -- Watch it here

Carrie-Underwood_218.jpg

Carrie Underwood’s new album Blown Away is out today, and to celebrate, she performed a mini concert last night for the Live on Letterman webcast.

What we learned: Even though she still has music’s best legs, she’s worried she’s not quite in tour shape yet. She said she was losing her breath after one number, but we assume that’s just be because she was plowing through a set list she kept purposefully upbeat (save for one ballad, “Jesus Take the Wheel”) and even her fast songs require ample belting.

She played several songs off the new record, including the fiddle footstomper “Cupid’s Got a Shotgun,” which she admitted her husband, hockey star Mike Fisher, questioned the first time she let him listen to it. (She concedes that it’s a little out of character.)

She also said she had to pull out every hunting reference she’d ever heard Fisher make while writing the song: ”I’m like, ‘Remington? I think that’s a gun. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, let’s say that. Kevlar? What is that? I know that’s something, something important,’” she told the crowd. “But the other writers had to teach me what the word ‘barrage’ meant. I was like, ‘What is that? Is that a word? You guys are making crap up, trying to stick it in a song.’ But I learned something new, so that was fun.”

Watch her perform the song on Live on Letterman below. And props to her guitarist Shawn Tubbs — subbing in for Brad Paisley, who handles the guitar solo on album. READ FULL STORY »

Eric Church takes aim at Blake Shelton, 'The Voice,' wussy rock music -- UPDATE

eric-church

That Eric Church guy is a wild one.

In a recent Rolling Stone interview with the country star, we learn that the Chief chief’s hobbies include: riding around in four-wheelers while clutching loaded guns and beer, getting cowboy boots thrown at him during shows, and punching security guards.

Oh, and he also likes to talk a lot of smack.

Take, for example, Church’s assessment of today’s music industry:

“It’s become American Idol gone mad. Honestly, if Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green f—ing turn around in a red chair, you got a deal. That’s crazy.”

“I don’t know what would make an artist do that,” Church continued. “You’re not an artist.”

Naturally, Shelton and his wife Miranda Lambert (whose career began on the reality talent show Nashville Star in 2003 and who also played a part in The Voice this season) were none too pleased.

Watch Dee Snider's video for 'Mack the Knife' - EXCLUSIVE

Dee-Snider_180.jpg

Dee Snider has worn plenty of hats (and wigs) over the course of his decades-long career. He fronted influential metal band Twisted Sister, hosted a number of radio shows, dabbled as a TV star, held Broadway stages, and even directed an underrated horror movie.

His latest project brings together a few of those disparate interests. Dee Does Broadway finds Snider using his unique voice to tackle some of Broadway’s most famous standards, like “Cabaret,” “Luck Be a Lady” (from Guys and Dolls), and “Razzle Dazzle” (from Chicago). There are also a handful of drop-ins from music theater legends like Patti LuPone and Bebe Neuwirth.

For a good idea of the sort of rock and theater hybrid Snider has built, check out the world premiere of the video for “Mack the Knife” (directed by his son Cody Blue Snider) below. READ FULL STORY »

The Wanted are sort of sorry about Christina Aguilera, now talking about Britney Spears

the-wanted

Sorry, but: Oops, they did it again!

(Again, so sorry.) After calling Voice popster Christina Aguilera “a total bitch” in a radio interview last week and semi-apologizing for it, the British boy band the Wanted are now gossiping about Britney Spears behind her back — literally.

The group showed up on New York’s Fresh 102.7 this morning to talk about their experiences with Spears, whom they opened for in Manchester last fall.

“We signed a confidentiality thing that we should never say anything about what happened, but let’s tell it anyway,” said the Wanted’s Tom Parker, the same dude who lobbed the B word at Xtina. READ FULL STORY »

Backstreet Boys: Kevin Richardson set to return

Backstreet-Boys

Big news today in the Backstreet Boys world — and by that I mean the tiny little universe where time stands still that I have created inside the fours walls of my office: Kevin Richardson is coming back (all right!).

After leaving the group in 2006, the oldest Backstreet Boy (the one you didn’t realize you missed until you heard the remaining four guys sing “I Want It That Way” without him) announced over the weekend that he’s returning to the group. [Cue totally subdued, mature adult screams.]

The band first dropped the news over the weekend to a crowd in London, and posted a video of the announcement on their site; Richardson later confirmed via Twitter. According to the band, Richardson and the rest of the Boys will soon be headed back into the studio to record a new album.

Reached by time machine for comment, 12-year-old me says she’s “thrilled.”
