Whitney Houston laid to rest

Whitney Houston is being laid to rest at a private ceremony in New Jersey.

Houston died Feb. 11 in California at age 48. No cause of death has been determined.

She is being buried Sunday at the cemetery in Westfield where her father was interred in 2003. Onlookers were gathering along the route to her gravesite as the police-escorted motorcade headed toward it and the hearse carrying her casket entered the cemetery.

The pop star was mourned at a funeral Saturday at the church in Newark where she sang in the choir as a child. The invitation-only service featured a tribute by some of the biggest names in the music, including Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys. Kevin Costner and music mogul Clive Davis were among those who spoke.

Bobby Brown might not have stayed for the entirety of Whitney Houston’s funeral in Newark, N.J. Saturday — the singer released a statement claiming he decided to leave after security barred him from seeing his daughter with Houston, Bobbi Kristina — but Brown paid tribute to Houston in his own way during an appearance with New Edition Saturday night in Connecticut. “I want to give blessings to my ex-wife,” he told the crowd, pointing to the sky. “I love you.” Brown, who said he was going through a “difficult” year, then also blessed his “kids, my fiancé, my brothers, and all of you.”

Earlier this week, Brown announced he would leave the New Edition tour in order to spend time with Bobbi Kristina, but still made sure to remind fans he was still part of the group. Said Brown after toasting Houston, “I go by the name of badass Bobby Brown” See a clip from the concert after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

Tyler Perry delivered an impassioned tribute to Whitney Houston during the singer’s funeral at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, N.J., praising the singer’s grace, talent, and dedication to God. Said Perry, who said he often spoke to Houston about her faith, “There are two constants that I know about Whitney Houston. There was a grace that carried, a grace that carried her down from heaven through Miss Cissy Houston, a grace that brought her up through singing.” Watch video of his speech after the jump.

Watch Kevin Costner's touching tribute at Whitney Houston's funeral -- VIDEO

kevin-costner_320.jpg

One of the most touching speeches at Whitney Houston’s funeral came from an unlikely source: Kevin Costner. The actor, who starred in 1992′s The Bodyguard with Houston, spoke at length about the multi-hyphenate who passed away Feb. 11, and their bond over growing up in the Baptist Church. If you missed the speech broadcast live, watch the speech — which led to a standing ovation for Costner — in three parts embedded after the jump. “You weren’t just pretty,” Costner said, addressing Houston, who he said was very unsure of herself during The Bodyguard‘s shooting. “You were as beautiful as a woman could be. And people didn’t just like you Whitney. They loved you.” READ FULL STORY »

Bobby Brown left Whitney Houston's funeral after being kept away from Bobbi Kristina: 'I fail to understand why security treated my family this way'

UPDATE: Bobby Brown’s representative issued a statement regarding Brown’s early exit at Whitney Houston’s funeral at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, N.J.: “My children and I were invited to the funeral of my ex-wife Whitney Houston. We were seated by security and then subsequently asked to move on three separate occasions. I fail to understand why security treated my family this way and continue to ask us and no one else to move … Security then prevented me from attempting to see my daughter Bobbi-Kristina. In light of the events, I gave a kiss to the casket of my ex-wife and departed as I refused to create a scene. My children are completely distraught over the events. This was a day to honor Whitney. I doubt Whitney would have wanted this to occur. I will continue to pay my respects to my ex-wife the best way I know how.”

EARLIER: Bobby Brown was reportedly not in attendance for Whitney Houston’s entire funeral, but there are conflicting reports describing why and when he had left the service. People reports a source claimed Brown was turned away from the ceremony Saturday at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, N.J. A source tells People: “Bobby was outside the church … he hugged his brother and then got in a car, and they drove him off … They wouldn’t allow him in.”

But others say he was invited to attend to support his daughter with Houston, Bobbi Kristina, and was in fact inside the church. HLN tweeted, “He walked by Whitney’s casket and then came back up the isle. His eyes were red, and his head was down.” CNN reports that Brown and his entourage left during the service. (Others claim Brown left in a Cadillac Escalade with children Landon and LaPrincia.) Earlier, Al Sharpton, who was in attendance at funeral, tweeted during the ceremony: “I am at Whitney’s funeral. I spoke with Bobby Brown trying to calm him down and not distract from the services. Today is about Whitney!”

Aretha Franklin will not perform at Whitney Houston's funeral

Though Aretha Franklin was originally on tap to sing “The Greatest Love of All” at Whitney Houston’s funeral Saturday, the Queen of Soul had to cancel her appearance. CNN reports a rep for the singer says Franklin is too ill to perform. UPDATE: People reports Franklin said leg spasms kept her from appearing and performing at the funeral. Said Franklin in a statement: “Regretfully, I am so sorry that I was unable to be with you at Whitney’s service today. I had every intention of being there. But unfortunately I had terrible leg spasms and locked leg muscles until 4:00 a.m. this morning following my concert last night, which I’ve been having for the last few days … I feel it necessary and very important to stay off my leg today as much as possible until concert time this evening. My heart goes out to my dear friend Cissy, Dionne, Bobbi Kristina and the rest of the family. May God keep them all.”

The funeral — which is being held at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, N.J. and is being broadcast and streamed online live — will, however, still feature performances from Alicia Keys, R. Kelly, Stevie Wonder, Kim Burrell, and BeBe Winans. Houston’s cousin Dionne Warwick, Kevin Costner, Clive Davis, and Tyler Perry are expected to speak at the funeral.

Miranda Lambert tells Chris Brown to 'take notes' during 'Gunpowder and Lead' performance

Though the image of clean-cut Miranda Lambert sitting next to the scepter-carrying Lady Gaga at the Grammys was strange enough, we can say one thing: At least Lambert wasn’t seated next to Chris Brown. Since watching Brown perform and pick up a trophy at the Grammys Sunday, the country star has taken it upon herself to jumpstart a feud with Brown, or publicly condemn domestic violence, depending on your view.

Lambert began slamming the “Look At Me Now” singer — who won a Grammy for Best R&B Album for his release F.A.M.E. — at the ceremony Sunday, tweeting, “I don’t get it. He beat on a girl,” referring to Brown’s infamous felony assault of ex-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009. And it seems Lambert has only continued her digs on Brown, bringing up the singer at a concert at the University of Massachusetts Thursday. Lambert produced a poster for audiences reading “Take Notes Chris Brown” just prior to her performance of “Gunpowder and Lead.” The subject of the tune? A woman who decides to kill her abusive husband.

Said Lambert after showing the poster to her fans: “Get a good picture now, put it on Twitter … I’ve been in a world of hurt with Chris Brown fans lately … but see, I just have to speak my mind because where I come from, beating up on a woman is never okay.” She continued: “So that’s why my daddy taught me early on in life how to use a shotgun.” (See video of the moment embedded after the jump.) Caroline Whigham, the funeral director, told those gathered outside the funeral home that the viewing “was done in privacy. It was between a mother, a daughter, two brothers, and a family.”

Houston’s funeral will be held Saturday at the New Hope Baptist Church, also in Newark. (Also known as the church in which Houston got her start as a singer.) Click here to watch the event with EW and Essence.
