Courtney Love 'not amused' by Paul McCartney hooking up with Nirvana

As we noted in our on-the-scene report, there was a lot to be unamused by at the 12-12-12 concert in Madison Square Garden last night. Courtney Love thought so too — even before the show began.

According to a TMZ report, Love was “not amused” by the thought of Paul McCartney sitting in with her late husband’s band, Nirvana. And while her concerns regarding “Beatlevana” — Macca playing with Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear – were shared by many, her solution was a little less solid.

TMZ noted that Love was “upset at Krist and Dave for calling tonight’s show a Nirvana reunion because she says Kurt was the heart and soul of the legendary band,” which we totally get. But she also told them, “Look, if John were alive it would be cool,” referring of course to the late Lennon. Which, like, yeah — if we’re playing that game, it would also be cool if Kurt Cobain were alive.

At any rate, she and other Nirvana fans should be relieved to know that Paul’s little experiment with Grohl last night involved neither the music of Nirvana or of the Beatles, but rather an inoffensive, Led Zeppelin-y number titled, appropriately enough, “Cut Me Some Slack.” (We’ve reached out to Love for her thoughts, but her team declined to comment.)

Paul McCartney reuniting surviving members of Nirvana for 12-12-12 benefit concert

Tonight’s 12-12-12 benefit for Hurricane Sandy victims has turned into a musical juggernaut, with everyone from the Rolling Stones to Kanye West signing on for the Madison Square Garden-hosted event.

And just when you thought that they’d run out of names to add to the lineup, this happens: Nirvana survivors Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear will be playing together as a band again — with Paul McCartney.

But don’t worry, Macca won’t be doing any Kurt Cobain impressions. According to reports, this new venture will resist the urge to play any actual Nirvana songs. Instead, Sir Paul will be debuting a new song that he and Grohl have been secretly working on in the studio. As McCartney told the British Sun, it all started when he decided to ring Grohl up one day and got invited to “jam with some mates.”

And it just so happened that those mates used to play together as Nirvana twenty years ago. “I didn’t really know who they were,” the Beatle said. “They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said ‘Whoa? You guys haven’t played together for all that time?’ And somebody whispered to me, ‘That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt.’ I couldn’t believe it.”

Unless McCartney was just having a very vivid dream, the world will get to see what he and the guys came up with when the 12-12-12 concert goes down tonight. (Also, he’ll be playing Saturday Night Live this weekend, so keep an eye on that too.)

If you can’t be at the show in New York, come back here to the Music Mix at 7 p.m. ET, where we’ll be streaming the entire concert live (and providing a full recap tomorrow as well).

To help you get excited, here’s a reminder of what the show’s lineup looks like as of now:
