One year after she pledged to bring teenage leukemia survivor Kevin McGuire to the ACM Awards, Taylor Swift has finally had a chance to make good on her promise. (Kevin couldn’t attend the 2012 ceremony due to a chemo-induced fever, though Swift did give him a heartfelt shout-out in her Entertainer of the Year acceptance speech.) McGuire and his family attended the show in Las Vegas yesterday, after enjoying a private pre-telecast meeting with Swift. No word on whether the singer and her “date” planned their complementary outfits, though. READ FULL STORY
Miranda Lambert is always a class act when it comes to awards show speeches. She sweetly name-dropped every woman in her category during a CMA speech last November, and at this year’s ACM Awards, Lambert went out of her way to shine light on her female colleagues once again during her acceptance speech for Female Vocalist of the Year — especially Carrie Underwood, who has been shut out of multiple awards over the past year despite the success of her Blown Away album and tour.
“I for sure thought Carrie had it this year, and she damn well deserves it,” Lambert said at the top of her speech. “I’m not supposed to say that on TV,” she admitted. The simple comment is sure to earn Lambert some good will. Not only are some country fans slightly frustrated by the way Blake and Miranda (the reigning king and queen of Nashville) seem to win every award they’re nominated for, but a growing sense of frustration has begun to inundate the country community that Underwood doesn’t get the recognition she deserves. Blake and Luke are no Brad and Carrie, but both country stars were happily game to roast each other during the ACM Awards opening tonight. While their cheesy delivery could use some work (Luke Bryan, not wanting to appear too rude, kept laughing hard and patting Blake Shelton’s back after each barb, which made much of the already too obvious humor seem even lamer), the guys did manage a few chuckle worthy lines. Plus, their camaraderie at the end of the show after Bryan nabbed the Entertainer of the Year trophy was genuinely charming.
Here are some of their best quips:
Blake: “How about a shout out to the Sherwin Williams company for spray-painting Luke’s jeans on for him tonight? You know what a Motel 6 and Luke’s jeans have in common? There’s no ballroom.” READ FULL STORY
Did Blake and Miranda maintain their reign as the king and queen of country? Did Taylor Swift take home a third Entertainer of the Year trophy? And did newly engaged Best New Artist nominees Jana Kramer and Brantley Gilbert beat out Florida Georgia Line? They don’t call him Chief for nothing: Eric Church is the top nominee at this year’s Academy of Country Music Awards.
The rising country music star has seven nominations for the April 7 awards show in Las Vegas. Hunter Hayes is next with six, followed by Taylor Swift and Miranda Lambert at five apiece.
Swift and Lambert are up for the academy’s top honor — entertainer of the year — with Lambert’s husband, Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan. Swift is going for her third straight win in that category.
Shelton and Bryan will co-host the broadcast, to air live on CBS from the MGM Grand. READ FULL STORY
The real winners were announced last night at the 47th Academy of Country Music Awards. But here are a few more honors from the telecast that you should feel free to weigh in on:
Best hosts: They’re no Brad and Carrie, but Blake Shelton and Reba McEntire (or is it just Reba these days?) maintained a playful rapport and charming competitiveness throughout the telecast. During the opening bit, Blake nailed Taylor Swift’s trademark suprised face while joking about her upcoming perfume. “Oh my gosh! I can’t believe I smell this good!” he imitated as he put his hands to his cheeks. Reba roasted Blake a bit for his old mullet (never forget!), and in return, Blake offered a few barbs about her age — although she’s looking mighty fine at 57! Blake’s humor just ever so slightly delved into the mean territory (I could have done without the Randy Travis and Tim Tebow jokes), but he still garnered big laughs throughout the night. Why is it that country music award shows seem to be the only type that prove hosts can actually be funny? My guess is that they don’t take themselves so dang seriously! READ FULL STORY
