The 2012 Billboard Music Awards were doled out last night during a live telecast from the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas that was broadcast on ABC and hosted by the network’s Modern Family stars Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen.

Of course, much like the Grammys, just a fraction of the 46 awards were given out during the show, which — also like the Grammys — played more like a concert. Although she wasn’t in attendance at the show, Adele dominated with 12 awards, followed by LMFAO with six awards and Lil Wayne and Coldplay with four each.

The full list of 2012 Billboard Music Award winners is as follows:

carrie-underwood-2

Carrie Underwood has Blown Away the competition for a second week in a row.

The American Idol winner’s fourth album topped the Billboard 200 once again this week with sales of 120,000, holding off new debuts from Silversun Pickups, Tank, Keane, and Karmin, as well as Mother’s Day-boosted sales from top-selling artists like Adele and Lionel Richie.

Album Sales: Jack White's 'Blunderbuss' debuts at No. 1; The Wanted can't compete with One Direction

After records with the White Stripes, the Raconteurs, and the Dead Weather, Jack White released his first solo record this week  — and earned the first no. 1 album of his career.

Blunderbuss entered the Billboard 200 at the top with sales of 138,000. That was enough to put him ahead of new debuts from Lee Brice, Kip Moore, and The Wanted, whose EP couldn’t overtake the seventh-week sales of “rivals” One Direction.

Here’s how the chart shook out:

1. Jack White, Blunderbuss, 138,000
Although the former White Stripes mastermind has had eight albums reach the Top 10, his best chart position until now came in 2007, when The Stripes’ Icky Thump debuted (and peaked) in second place.

2. Adele, 21, 84,000
After 62 weeks on the chart, Adele’s blockbuster album, the fourth-best selling in the last ten years, has now sold over 8.9 million copies and is still going strong. Even if it trails a bit in the months to come, it’s pretty much guaranteed to reach diamond certification for sales of 10 million copies. Whether any other album can ever reach those heights remains to be seen; only three albums have sold more in the last decade: Norah Jones’s Come Away With Me (10,797,000), Eminem’s The Eminem Show (10,049,000), and Usher’s Confessions (9,968,000).

3. Lionel Richie, Tuskegee, 78,000
In its fifth week, Lionel Richie’s country collaboration album dipped from 1 to 3 and has now sold an impressive 612,000 copies. Perhaps Richie’s renewed cachet in the music biz is why he suddenly realized he has too many “personal scheduling conflicts” to be a part of ABC’s summer reality series Duets. (John Legend has stepped in to replace him.)

4. One Direction, Up All Night, 50,000
The U.K. boy banders’ breakout, which started with 176,000 copies in March, ticked up from 5-4 this week. After seven frames on the chart, the group’s debut has sold 541,000 copies. While their single “What Makes You Beautiful” has been downloaded less than The Wanted’s “Glad You Came” (1.8 million vs. 2.2 million downloads), they have the clear bragging rights when it comes to album sales.

5. Lee Brice, Hard 2 Love, 46,000
The country singer’s sophomore release improved upon his 2010 debut, Love Like Crazy, which peaked at No. 44 in 2010. His single “A Woman Like You” recently hit No. 1 on the Country Songs chart.

6. Kip Moore, Up All Night, 37,000
That’s right, there’s another Up All Night on the chart — and it beat The Wanted, too! The “Something ‘Bout a Truck” singer  launched his debut country album into sixth place. “Truck” currently sits at No. 9 on the Country Songs chart.

7. The Wanted, The Wanted, 34,000
Maybe calling Christina Aguilera a “total bitch” wasn’t such a hot idea. The British boy band’s seven-song EP (their U.S. debut) didn’t sell as well as many prognosticators expected, especially given the blockbuster success of their Ibiza-tinged single “Glad You Came.” Although the single hasn’t left the Top 5 of the Hot 100 for the past nine weeks, their self-titled collection sold less than 1/5th of One Direction’s Up All Night first-week sales (they clocked 176,000). Perhaps The Wanted will go the route of acts like the Black Eyed Peas, whose dancey singles set radio and iTunes on fire, but don’t move many albums. Or perhaps fans are just waiting for a full-length album to pull the trigger. We’ll find out when the band release their LP in the fall.

8. Nicki Minaj, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, 32,000
In its fourth week, Minaj’s sophomore set fell from 6 to 9 (-33 percent) and has now sold 413,000 total copies. But with her newly released video for “Starships,” sales may stabilize in the weeks to come.

9. Gotye, Making Mirrors, 32,000
His breakthrough single “Somebody That I Used To Know” (featuring Kimbra) is still selling strong, returning to the No. 1 spot on the Hot Digital songs chart this week. The Belgian-born, Australia-raised star has now spent four weeks in the Top 10.

10. Jason Mraz, Love Is A Four Letter Word, 29,000
After a No. 2 debut last week, the super-chill “I Won’t Give Up” singer’s album suffered a 71 percent drop.

What do you think of this week’s chart? Did you pick up any of these albums?

Adele, LMFAO, and Rihanna lead Billboard Music Award finalists

Adele_240.jpg

Fresh off their name-checks in the Time 100, Adele and Rihanna have more kudos to brag about. They’re leading the pack of Billboard Music Awards nominees, along with Lady Gaga, LMFAO, and Lil Wayne. Adele scored 18 nods — including Top Artist, Top Female Artist, and Top Billboard 200 Artist — off the mega-sales of her album 21 and its lead single “Rolling in the Deep.” “Party Rockers” LMFAO will be in the house behind thanks to 17 nods. Rihanna could win up to 13 trophies, and Lady Gaga and Lil Wayne could be walking home with a lot of hardware, after netting 10 nods apiece. Usual suspects like Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Coldplay, Nicki Minaj, and Bruno Mars are also among the pool of finalists. You can view the full list here.

Album sales: Lionel Richie climbs to No. 1; Gotye races up the chart following 'SNL'

Two weeks ago, Madonna’s MDNA beat Lionel Richie’s Tuskegee pretty handily on the Billboard 200, but just 14 days later, Lionel Richie has climbed into first place and Madonna is no longer in the Top 10 at all. In the battle of chart longevity, Richie’s latest has legs.

Indeed, Tuskegee is proving to be a blockbuster album for Richie, and it leads the chart in its third week with sales of 129,000. Also debuting on the chart are new discs from Monica, Bonnie Raitt, and Hoodie Allen. Check out the full Top 10 below:

1. Lionel Richie, Tuskegee – 129,000
The veteran singer’s foray into country music got a big boost from a CBS special called ACM Presents: Lionel Richie & Friends in Concert that aired on Friday, April 13 and nabbed almost 8 million viewers. Shot the day after the ACM Awards in Las Vegas, the special featured performances with Rascal Flatts, Jennifer Nettles, and Jason Aldean, among other country superstars. Consequently, Richie’s album rose from number 4 to number 1 and has now sold 423,000 copies.

2. Adele, 21 – 92,000
In it’s 60th week on the chart, the 8x platinum album held strong in second place despite a 40 percent drop.

3. Nicki Minaj, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded – 81,000
Although Minaj’s hit single “Starships” is holding well at No. 6 on the Hot 100, her sophomore album isn’t blasting off of shelves like her first disc, Pink Friday, did in 2010. In its second week, Roman Reloaded, which debuted atop the Billboard 200 last week, dropped 68 percent into third place and has now sold 334,000 copies. Sure, that’s an impressive total for any artist, but the original Pink Friday sold 375,000 copies in its first week alone.

4. Monica, New Life  69,000
Except for her 1995 debut, Miss Thang, all of Monica’s studio albums have debuted in the Top 10 — this one is her fifth straight title to reach that tier. Sales are driven by her newest single, “It All Belongs to Me” which reunites her with “The Boy is Mine” collaborator Brandy.

5. One Direction, Up All Night  66,000
The former #1 album spends a second week at No. 5, dropping just 28 percent.  It has not left the Top 10 since its debut five weeks ago and has now sold 434,000 copies total.

6. Bonnie Raitt, Slipstream  64,000
The 62-year-old blues/folk queen scored her best sales week since her smash 1994 album Longing in Their Hearts, which reached number one. The critically lauded Slipstream is Raitt’s fourth top 10 album — and her first since Hearts 18 years ago.

7. Gotye, Making Mirrors  54,000
Following Gotye’s performance on Saturday Night Live, his album jumped 15-7 in its fourteenth week. His smash single “Somebody That I Used To Know” (featuring Kimbra) also tops the Hot 100 today after being downloaded 542,000 times — the fourth biggest download tally in history — in the last sales period.

8. Alabama Shakes, Boys & Girls  43,000
In its second week, the album, which got a physical release this week following a digital only debut frame increased by a very healthy 72 percent.

9. Rascal Flatts, Changed  41,000
With a whopping 60 percent drop, the country trio dipped 3-9 in their second week.

10. Hoodie Allen, All American – 27,000.
Not many people had heard of the Jewish rapper (nee Steve Markowitz) before he topped the iTunes sales chart last Tuesday with this EP, but he still managed to land a buzzy No. 10 bow.

You gave her all your luvin’, gave her your luv – and now Madonna is sitting pretty atop the Billboard 200, for the eighth time!

Madge’s latest album, MDNA, sold 359,000 copies in its first week, which was well ahead of her last effort (2008′s Hard Candy started with 280,000), and the pop star’s best sales week since her successful 2000 set Music bowed with 420,000.

MDNA marks Madonna’s fifth straight No. 1 debut; if she can keep up the momentum and manage one more, she will tie Barbra Streisand as the female artist with the most chart-topping albums. (Streisand, who turns 70 this month, has had nine.)

Interestingly, Madonna achieved these MDNA numbers without a hit single currently making waves. The first track released from MDNA, “Give Me All Your Luvin’,” a cheer-pop dance tune featuring Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., debuted at No. 10 on the Hot 100 but quickly faded. Her followup, “Girl Gone Wild,” is just now beginning its run. So what’s behind her big sales uptick? First off, her performance during the Super Bowl halftime show put Madonna in front of 113 million(!) viewers. On top of that, U.S. ticket buyers for Madonna’s upcoming world tour had the option of receiving a copy of MDNA with their purchase; a similar strategy helped propel both Bon Jovi’s Lost Highway and Tom Petty’s Mojo to No. 1. Album sales: One Direction makes history with No. 1 debut of 'Up All Night'

one-direction

A few months ago, we asked you, “Are boy bands officially back?” According to this week’s Billboard 200, the answer is a resounding “Yes.”

British boy band One Direction debuted atop the chart with their first album, Up All Night, which sold an impressive 176,000 copies in its first week. In doing so, Simon Cowell’s fivesome, who are signed to SYCO/Columbia, became the first-ever British act to debut atop the Billboard 200 with its debut disc. The former highest Brit debut was the Spice Girls’ Spice, which started at No. 6 in 1997, although it did climb to No. 1 three months later.

One Direction turned industry heads a few weeks ago when their American television debut on The Today Show drew over 10,000 screaming fans into Rockefeller Center, but before this week, the group hadn’t demonstrated much sales power Stateside.

Remarkably, their debut single “What Makes You Beautiful,” which currently sits at No. 33 on the Hot 100 (and was predicted as the spring’s biggest song by EW readers), has only been available in America for five weeks. But in a YouTube-driven industry, international artists are available to fans at the click of a mouse (the music video has garnered over 75 million views since its debut in August) — tweens had more than enough time to fall for their new obsession via the Internet. Album sales: Bruce Springsteen's 'Wrecking Ball' finally knocks Adele's '21' out of the top spot

The Boss scored his tenth No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 this week with his latest album, Wrecking Ball, selling an impressive 196,000 copies.

In doing so, Springsteen matched Elvis’ record of ten number ones, making them the only two male solo rock artists to ever achieve the feat. (Jay-Z, meanwhile, has had twelve No. 1 debuts, including collaboration albums.)

Chart queen Adele just barely missed the top spot for a 24th week. Her album 21 had to settle for a second-place finish, selling 195,000 and blazing past the 8 million mark in total sales. 21 is the first album to sell 8 million copies since Usher’s Confessions passed that plateau in January 2005.

Lady Antebellum’s Own the Night (+437 percent), Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto (+567 percent),  Drake’s Take Care (+97 percent), Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV (+173 percent), and Now 41 (+235 percent) all received major boosts thanks to special one-day 25 cent sales on Google Play last week, which were matched by AmazonMP3.

According to Billboard, none of these titles are affected by the rule change that went into effect in November after Lady Gaga’s Born This Way was sold for 99 cents in its first week. The magazine says that “only albums priced below $3.49 during their first four weeks of release will not be eligible for inclusion on the Billboard album charts,” and these have all been out for at least five frames.

Country star Luke Bryan’s annual springtime EP, Spring Break 4: Suntan City, sold 30,000 copies. His most recent album Tailgates and Tanlines, which debuted in August, sits at No. 18 and has sold 831,000 copies so far. In tenth, Andrew Bird’s Break It Yourself also moved 30,000 copies, his best sales week ever.

Nine straight weeks. That’s how long Adele’s 21 has sat atop the Billboard 200 in 2012.

(The disc has been at No. 1 for 22 weeks total — the most since Prince’s 1984 album Purple Rain.) This week, the Grammy-winning, Brit Award bird-flipping, generally beloved diva, whose song “Set Fire to the Rain” was positively butchered last night on American Idol, moved yet another 297,000 copies of 21 this week. Its total now stands above 7.6 million. READ FULL STORY »
