Aerosmith to record new album this summer? Tyler says he and Perry 'just smoked the peace pipe'

It wasn’t long ago that newbie reality TV judge Steven Tyler introduced the idiom “—- a duck and see what hatches” to unsuspecting American Idol audiences, and it looks like he’s taking his own advice to heart.

According to his Twitter feed, Tyler has buried the hatchet with long-time songwriting partner/bitter rival Joe Perry and Aerosmith are on their way to “rock’in your worlds this summer by locking our selves away somewhere w/ guitars and drums.” Guitars and drums? Who could ask for more!

Tyler says the return of Aerosmith is reason to “rejoice,” and if the classic rockers are following in the footsteps of their 2004 album, he’s not lying. Honkin’ on Bobo was a late-career highlight, showcasing the band returning to their blues-rock roots and eschewing the watered-down arena rock that ended up making them a perfect soundtrack for Mrs. Euphegenia Doubtfire air-guitaring on a broom. Jennifer Lopez debuts 'On the Floor' video on 'American Idol': Watch it here

Jennifer-Lopez-new-videoAbout a week ago, we here at The Music Mix posed the question: Is J.Lo back? Well, after watching the music video for her new, Pitbull-laced single “On the Floor” debut on American Idol earlier this evening, the answer is rather resoundingly: Yes! The video (coupled with her genius judging skills on Idol) is a return to glamour and fabulousness for the diva who, less than two years ago, could be found falling off her Louboutins while singing the miserable “Louboutins” at the AMAs.

Before we go further, watch the video here, and then enjoy my commentary right afterward:

Jennifer Hudson says new album covers her 'four different lives'

Jennifer-Hudson-OscarsImage Credit: Rick Rowell/ABCSinging and acting talent Jennifer Hudson has plenty on her plate. And judging by her newly slimmed figure, hardly any of it is topped with food.

In addition to promoting her upcoming album, Hudson attended the 83rd Academy Awards last night. The 2007 Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actress in Dreamgirls was on hand as a presenter last night, and on the pre-show red carpet, the American Idol alum told EW a bit about the meaning behind her forthcoming I Remember Me, out March 22.

Jennifer Lopez's 'On the Floor' video to debut March 3 on 'American Idol': Is J.Lo back?

JLO-IDOLImage Credit: FoxAmerican Idol judges using the TV juggernaut as a launchpad to revive their own ailing music careers isn’t a new concept—former Idol pundit Paula Abdul attempted it three years ago with her catchy-but-unable-to-catch-fire single “Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow,” to little success.

And now, Jennifer Lopez is giving the strategy a go by announcing that she’ll debut the video for her new, hot-on-iTunes jam “On the Floor” on Idol‘s results show next Thursday, March 3. So far it seems that Lopez is enjoying a greater measure of success. Let’s examine.

Elton John's advice for 'American Idol': 'Let's change the format a little'

elton-johnImage Credit: Alberto E. Rodriguez/WireImage.comHe famously turned down a chance to join the luxuriously coiffed panel—”I was asked to judge American Idol,” he told the Daily Mail last fall. “I couldn’t do it because I won’t slag anyone off”—but Elton John does have a few ideas for improving the show, now in its tenth season.

MTV spoke to the music legend about the upcoming American version of X Factor, a.k.a. the project that lured Simon Cowell and his fitted tees away from Idol, and he had this to say:

X Factor is going to be a huge show. It’s going to be huge, because you can have bands on there, and that’s one thing I wanted to change, if I had been on American Idol, ” John told the channel. “Get away from the solo stuff. Let’s have bands, let’s have writers, let’s have songwriters, let’s change the format a little, and that’s why X Factor is going to do so well, because it’s a different lineup. You can have bands and groups. That’s more interesting, I think.”

'American Idol': Major music producers Alex da Kid, Tricky Stewart, Darkchild working with auditioning contestants in Las Vegas

American-Idol-producersImage Credit: Todd Duffey/PR Photos; Janet Mayer/PR Photos; John Shearer/WireImage.com; Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic.comThe big changes on American Idol in its 10th season just keep on coming. This week, about 60 auditioning contestants (whittled down from 325 who made it to the Hollywood week round) have been rehearsing at the Las Vegas Mirage hotel to perform Beatles songs on the stage that Cirque du Soleil performs its Beatles-themed show LOVE. EW has learned that music executive and Idol‘s new in-house mentor Jimmy Iovine — whose mega-label Universal Music Group will release the Idol winner’s first album — has been in Las Vegas mentoring the potential contestants for those performances, and has assembled an impressive roster of major music producers to help: Alex da Kid (who produced Eminem’s megahit “Love the Way You Lie” featuring Rihanna, and B.o.B’s “Airplanes” featuring Hayley Williams), Christopher “Tricky” Stewart (Justin Bieber’s “Baby” featuring Ludacris, Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies”, Rihanna’s “Umbrella”), Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins (Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” featuring Beyoncé, the Pussycat Doll’s “When I Grow Up”), Polow da Don (several Keri Hilson tracks, including “Turnin’ Me On” featuring Lil Wayne), and Jim Jonsin (Nelly’s “Just a Dream”, T.I.’s “Whatever You Like”). The contestants will only perform for Idol judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, and Steven Tyler, and not a live audience.

An Idol insider explains to EW that this is part of the season-long effort to get audiences to know the kids better as people and artists, and to get them out of their comfort zones and more accustomed to what life as a major music star would be like — i.e. putting down the guitar, and getting used to the big stage.

“Been shootin’ for American Idol all day,” Alex da Kid tweeted yesterday. “There were some kool kids [sic].”

Lee DeWyze debuts 'Sweet Serendipity': What do you think?

Lee-DeWyzeThere’s nothing wrong with “Sweet Serendipity,” the bouncy debut single from American Idol season 9 champ Lee DeWyze. Rhythmically, it skips along like a smooth stone across a placid pond. Melodically, it could serve as the baby greens on a satisfactory lite-rock sandwich. But at the risk of overtaxing those ridiculous/disparate similes, it’s hard to imagine “Sweet Serendipity” creating a lot of waves, or becoming anybody’s favorite new flavor at radio. It’s a vaguely inspirational, vaguely catchy affair, tailor made for the middle third of a Katherine Heigl or Kate Hudson rom-com trailer. You know, the part where they show a couple of sun-drenched urban vistas and quick-cut shots of our working-girl heroine learning to let loose, be free, and put a little love in her heart. Which isn’t the worst thing in the world, really. And though the song itself is a little generic, Lee’s gruff growl of a voice manages to not get sandpapered into submission by the major-label production; 15 seconds in, you know exactly who’s singing it. A couple other thoughts: READ FULL STORY »

Allison Iraheta parts ways with Jive Records

allison-irahetaImage Credit: Scott D. Smith/Retna Ltd.Allison Iraheta, fourth-place finisher on season 8 of American Idol, has parted ways with her label, Jive Records, EW.com has learned. Rumors began to swirl in the blogosphere over Labor Day weekend, when fans of the red-headed rocker noticed she was no longer listed under the roster of artists on Jive’s official Web site.

“Allison Iraheta has parted ways with Jive Records, however she remains signed to 19 Recordings. Allison is currently on the road in the U.S. opening for Adam Lambert on the Glam Nation Tour,” a 19 spokesperson told EW.

19 Recordings is the label arm of 19 Entertainment, which produces Idol. The company has traditionally signed the winner and runner-up of each season of Idol (and occasionally one or two other finalists), then licensed their albums to a Sony Music label (Jive or RCA) for release; READ FULL STORY »

Steven Tyler's pal Tommy Lee says the Aerosmith singer would 'Kill it' as an 'American Idol' judge (as long as he didn't fall off the stage)

jones-tylerImage Credit: Albert L. Ortega/PR Photos; PRN/PR PhotosTommy Lee dropped in to EW Towers this morning to talk about his new Methods of Mayhem CD, A Public Disservice Announcement (of which, more in due course). But we couldn’t let the Mötley Crüe skinsman leave without asking whether he had an opinion about the possibility of his fellow rocker Steven Tyler becoming a judge on American Idol. Turns out, he did.

“I know him really well, and he’ll f—ing kill it,” said Lee, who was himself a judge on the 2006 reality show Rock Star: Supernova. “Look, you’re judging karaoke—you don’t need to be a really super experienced judge for that. But it’s nice to have an actual musician in there. He’s fun, and he’ll keep the show exciting too. He’s a good guy for that, I think.”

One possible problem? Tyler would find it hard to criticize anyone who fell off the Idol stage, given his own recent habit of doing exactly that.

“He just fell off the stage,” laughed Lee. “I was watching  the news. I was like, is that from the other time, or is this a new one?”

Do you think Steven Tyler—or, for that matter, Tommy Lee—would be a good American Idol judge?
