Dearly departed playlist: A tribute to all the artists who died this year, via their own music

The music world lost a number of great contributors and classic artists this year, and far too many of them clearly had unfinished business. EW has already memorialized many of them, from the tragic end of taken-before-their-time artists like Amy Winehouse, Heavy D, and Gerard Smith of TV on the Radio, to the decades-long influence of industry icons such as Jerry Lieber, Clarence Clemons, Don Kirshner, and Nick Ashford. They will all be missed because each one of them left an indelible mark on the music world.

In an effort to tip our collective hat to them one last time before the year is out, we’ve put together a special (though by no means exhaustive) playlist, which features a key song that best sums up the career of the dearly departed, from the one hit wonders to the career giants. Michael Buble continues to dominate; The Black Keys enter at No. 2 -- this week in charts

In its seventh week, Michael Bublé’s Christmas continued to utterly dominate the Billboard 200, increasing by 64 percent to 479,000 copies, topping the chart for a third straight week and lifting its U.S. total to a whopping 1,517,000.

Whether the crooner’s compilation was boosted by Bublé’s recent NBC special or the fact that people are just becoming more eager to hear Christmas music is unclear. What is certain, though, is that Bublé will finish 2011 with one of the best-selling albums of the year — in only two months’ time.

Josh Groban achieved a similar feat in 2007, when his holiday compilation Noël moved 3.6 million copies in eleven weeks, and became the best-selling title of all of 2007. Susan Boyle’s debut I Dreamed a Dream was only on the chart for the last six weeks of 2009, but it sold 3.1 million copies, enough to become the second-biggest album in the U.S. that year (behind Taylor Swift’s Fearless). The holidays can be major boon for gift-ready albums like Bublé’s.

In second place, garage-rock wunderkinds the Black Keys avoided any sophomore slump (alright, technically this is their seventh album, but it’s their second record since they broke into the mainstream in 2010) with El Camino, which shifted 206,000 discs in its first week. That number marks the duo’s best sales week by far, trumping the 73,000 debut of their last album Brothers.

Adele and Justin Bieber fill out the third and fourth place slots, respectively. Adele’s 21 experienced a nice 30 percent boost to 187,000, which officially pushed the British songstress’ collection past the 5 million mark. According to Yahoo’s Paul Grein, this is the first time an album has sold 5 million copies in one calendar year since Usher’s Confessions in 2004.  Bieber’s Under the Mistletoe ticked up 19 percent to 153,000, bringing its total to 824,000. It could pass the platinum threshold next week.

Rounding out the top 5, Amy Winehouse’s posthumous release Lioness: Hidden Treasures started in fifth place, selling 114,000 copies. While far from Michael Jackson sales levels, that figure did beat out other debuts like Glee, the Music: Season 3, Volume 7 (No. 9, 58,000) and Korn’s The Path of Totality (No. 10, 55,000), as well as the Roots’ undun (no. 17) and Robin Thicke’s Love and War (No. 22).

Amy Winehouse biopic still a possibility: Family would consider supporting project which 'told the truth' -- EXCLUSIVE

A spokesperson for Mitch Winehouse has told EW that the father of the late Amy Winehouse would consider allowing his daughter’s music to be used in a biopic.

Various recent media reports had quoted Mitch Winehouse as saying he would never allow Amy’s life story to be told in a film. But Winehouse’s spokesperson claims this is inaccurate and that “Mitch and the family would entertain ideas perhaps for a film but only one they were sure would tell the truth.”

However, Mitch Winehouse has poured cold water on the reports that Lady Gaga is set to play his daughter in a biopic. “I never said Lady Gaga will play Amy,” he wrote on his Twitter page yesterday.

Adele says fans may have to wait a while for her next record

When Entertainment Weekly visited with Adele last spring, the singer said that she couldn’t wait to get back into the studio and record the follow-up to her hugely successful 21.

“I need to write my record,” explained the British chanteuse. “[My heart] is already broke. That’s why I need to write the record.” But Adele seems to have changed her tune about recording new tunes.

In a new email interview with Billboard, the 23 year old, who is currently recovering from throat surgery, makes clear that she is now in no hurry to return to the studio: “I imagine I’ll be 25 or 26 by the time my next record comes out, as I haven’t even thought about my third record yet. I’m just gonna lay some concrete, set up home and just ‘be’ for a bit. I’ll disappear and come back with a record when it’s good enough. There will be no new music until it’s good enough and until I’m ready.” READ FULL STORY

?uestlove guests on posthumous Amy Winehouse album

Amy Winehouse had written all the songs that were to appear on her third album. She even picked out song titles. But music producer Salaam Remi said the soul singer, who died over the summer, was not rushing to release that new material, instead planning to drop a jazz album first with a “supergroup” including ?uestlove of the Roots. “She had written down everything she wanted to do,” Remi said Tuesday.

Only two of the tracks Winehouse wrote were recorded and appear on her compilation album, Lioness: Hidden Treasures, out Dec. 5 in the United Kingdom, and a day later in America. READ FULL STORY

Amy Winhouse’s upcoming posthumous album Lioness: Hidden Treasures won’t be released until December 5, but today, two tracks from the eagerly anticipated collection hit the net.

One is a reggae-ish cover of Ruby & The Romantics’ “Our Day Will Come.” The other (below) is an original neo-jazz collaboration with rapper Nas called “Like Smoke.”

For whatever reason, the track, which was recorded in 2008 with Winhouse’s longtime producer Salaam Remi, never got released — perhaps because it does feel as though a second Winehouse verse is missing. Still, it does serve as a sobering reminder of her irresistible signature sound.

Posthumous Amy Winehouse album to be released

When Amy Winehouse tragically passed away at the age of 27 this summer, the talented songstress left behind an all-too-short musical legacy. But while Winehouse left fans with her memorable hits and two studio albums, there was undoubtedly still more to come. Now, it’s no longer a matter of “if” fans will get to hear more from the late star, but when.

According to an announcement on Winehouse’s official website, Island Records will be releasing a posthumous album on Dec. 5. The album, Lioness: Hidden Treasures, will feature 12 previously unreleased tracks from Winehouse, including alternate versions of classics (“Tears Dry,” “Valerie”), a number of covers (the Shirelles’ “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” bossa nova classic “The Girl From Ipanema,”  Donny Hathaway’s “A Song for You”) and new compositions, including her duet with Tony Bennett.

The website calls the album, which was compiled by Winehouse’s longtime collaborators Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson, “a fitting tribute to the artist, the talent and the woman and serves as a reminder of Amy’s extraordinary powers as a songwriter, a singer and an interpreter of classics.”

On the scene at the iHeartRadio Music Festival, day one: Black Eyed Peas, Kelly Clarkson, Alicia Keys, and Jay-Z

When you think about it, there’s really only one way to kick off a pop music festival: with the gyrating, electro, pulsing sounds of the Black Eyed Peas, of course.

The foursome opened the iHeartRadio Music Festival at the MGM Grand Garden Arena last night with laser lights, a cadre of jailbird-themed backup dancers (in a word: divine), and one of their signature songs, “Boom Boom Pow.”

It’s almost needless to say, but the party-rocking vibe the show’s producers were no doubt hoping for coalesced perfectly, as the crowd spiraled into dancing through songs like “Just Can’t Get Enough,” “Don’t Stop the Party,” “The Time (Dirty Bit),” and the perfect set-ender: “I Gotta Feeling.” (Personally, I was hoping for “Shut Up,” but no one ever seems to be into that song as much as me.)

Of much interest — at least to me — was Fergie’s delightful getup, which included glittery knee-high boots and onesie, and fascinating, gold fingernail/cap things that contributed to her overall drag queen look. She was Vegas to a T! (Then again, she always kind of is.)

The tone was set from the first act: This show was definitely all about the hits, and the 12,000 fans in the audience at the MGM Grand Garden Arena seemed to get just what they wanted. From top to bottom, the show was quite the Vegas production with huge screens flanking the stage, more than one confetti blast (the first one came at the almost-still-daylight time of 8:01 p.m., no joke), and, yes, Ryan Seacrest as host.

He first appeared after the Black Eyed Peas left the stage to introduce the show: “This weekend,” he said, in a trademark way that’s both overly dramatic and overly bombastic, “all roads lead to Vegas.” Well, all roads carrying the biggest pop stars, at least. And it was during this interlude that he announced something that made the crowd go completely wild: Lady Gaga—already confirmed to be performing during the festival—would appear on Saturday night with Sting. In two words: Instant death!
