Hear Butch Walker's weepy ode to classic rock 'Chrissie Hynde'

Butch-Walker

Butch Walker‘s been knocking around the music biz since the late ’80s, playing in bands, recording solo records, and writing and producing for a bewildering array of artists ranging from Bowling for Soup to Taylor Swift. After spending so much time he’s somewhat predictably developed a jaded view of the whole machine, which is probably why he gets along so well with similarly seen-it-all types like Ryan Adams, who produced his new album, Afraid of Ghosts, and Johnny Depp, who plays on it.

But like a lot of guys who like to project a sardonic front, Walker’s kind of a softie at heart, which comes through loud and clear on the Ghosts track “Chrissie Hynde.” It’s an aching, country-tinged ballad about a universal condition: the desire to give the world the middle finger and just put on some Pretenders records.

Hear Butch Walker's very pretty new song 'All the Love You Need' -- EXCLUSIVE

Butch Walker has a great track record working on songs for others — everyone from Taylor Swift to Fall Out Boy have enlisted his services — but his own music ain’t half-bad either.

Next month, the Georgia-born musician gets his own documentary called Butch Walker: Out of Focus. Check out the preview now:

Out of Focus includes a special track he recorded with South Carolina folk duo Shovels & Rope called “All the Love You Need,” and you can hear it exclusively here.

Says Walker of the song: “[Shovels & Rope’s] Mike and Cary Ann were on tour with me at the time, and they stayed in California to collaborate on [my] last record, The Spade. That song was a few lines I rattled off to Mike and the next day he came back with the rest written and it CRUSHED ME. we laid it down live in about one or two takes, just before happy hour. Thank God, because the song is super-depressing.”

Matthew McConaughey returns to his 'Dazed and Confused' character in Butch Walker's new 'Synthesizers' video: Watch it here

matthew-mcconaughey

You know what we love about Dazed and Confused? Matthew McConaughey gets older, but David Wooderson stays the same age.

After a nearly twenty-year hiatus, McConaughey has reprised the stoner comedy’s lingering high school graduate in Butch Walker’s new video for “Synthesizers,” off his album The Spade.

The collaboration came out of mutual admiration, and probably a dash of nostalgia. “When it comes to classic characters, Matthew McConaughey’s ‘Wooderson’ took the cake…and the high school girls with him,” Walker says.

Added McConaughey, “If you love Dazed and you loved Wooderson, you’ll see this and you’ll probably get the tickle box pretty quick.”

So how’s the iconic burnout holding up these days? Find out in the video below:

Butch Walker & the Black Widows' new single 'Synthesizers': Hear it here -- EXCLUSIVE

ButchWalker

If you don’t necessarily recognize Butch Walker by name, you certainly recognize his work.

Pink, Katy Perry, Weezer, Avril Lavigne, and Fall Out Boy have all benefited from Walker’s songwriting and production skills, and Walker picked up major viral traffic last year on his own when he put his impromptu cover of Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me” up on YouTube (a version that Swift liked so much that she invited Walker to play with her at the Grammys). And if you’re old enough to remember Dawson’s Creek, you’ll recall “Freak of the Week,” his alt-rock radio hit with his band Marvelous 3.

The Spade, his latest with backing band the Black Widows, is scheduled to drop on August 30 (you can pre-order it here). Like the bulk of his work, it’s full of big hooks, smart lyrics, and an overall sense of clever, stomping fun.
