On the Charts: 'Everybody Talks' has everybody talking, TobyMac has his 'Eye' on No. 1

Some say rock music is dying.

But no one told that to Neon Trees. The Utah-formed band earned their first Top 10 single on Billboard‘s Hot 100 this week with “Everybody Talks,” which jumped from No. 11 to No. 6 and sold 102,000 downloads.

Neon Trees formerly reached No. 13 with their 2010 Glee-approved hit “Animal,” but “Everybody Talks,” with its fuzzy pop-tinged chorus  and infectious wails, is proving to be more of a chart powerhouse.

In a pop music world dominated by dancy synths, it’s a testament to the continued viability of actual bands that two songs above “Everybody Talks” — fun.’s “Some Nights” (No. 5) and Maroon 5′s “One More Night” (No. 3) — are both doing so well.

“Everybody Talks” (which, for the record, I totally called back in April) has taken 25 weeks to reach the Top 10 (it also just hit No. 1 on Adult Pop Songs), and we’ll see if it climbs even higher in the future. On the Charts: Carly Rae has a 'Good Time', Train chugs along, Adele finally drops out of Top 10

Last week, Maroon 5 made waves when they pushed not one but two of their singles into the Top 10 of the Hot 100. This week, current pop princess Carly Rae Jepsen did the same thing.

Not only is Jepsen’s unstoppable hit “Call Me Maybe” still refusing to hang up — though it did drop from No. 4 to No. 6 — her Owl City collaboration “Good Time” also jumped from No. 13 to No. 9 in its ninth week on the chart.

According to Billboard, “Good Time” had a pretty great week; the song was the top Streaming Gainer and rose into the Top 10 of the On-Demand chart. It also increased by 10 percent at radio and by 13 percent on the Digital Songs chart, as the beachy hit sold an additional 144,000 downloads, which lifted its sales total right past the 1 million mark.

We’ll find out if “Good Time” gives Jepsen (who is the first female artist since Ke$ha to take her first two singles to the Top 10) that elusive second No. 1 in the weeks to come, but for now, let’s check the week’s other chart winners and losers: READ FULL STORY

On the Charts: Maroon 5 takes over, Taylor Swift hits No. 1, Kelly Clarkson stuck on the 'Dark Side'

Maroon 5 have officially accomplished the rare feat of having not one but two singles in the Top 10 of Billboard‘s Hot 100 this week.

Although their smash “Payphone” is on its way down after peaking at No. 2 (this week it dropped from No. 5 to No. 7), their followup “One More Night” has wasted no time ascending the upper tiers of the chart. This week “Night” jumps 15-9, following major gains at radio and 170,000 additional downloads.

The two hit singles are driving album sales for the band’s fourth album Overexposed, which grew 59 percent to 36,000 copies this week — a $3.99 sale on Amazon also boosted sales substantially — and moved from No. 11 to No. 5 on the Billboard 200. The disc has moved 450,000 copies after eight weeks on the chart.

We’ll find out if “One More Night” can climb one spot higher than “Payphone” in the weeks to come, but for now, let’s check out the week’s other chart winners and losers below:

Taylor Swift hits No. 1, sets sales record with 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together'

It may be hard to believe, but as we guessed might happen, Taylor Swift just earned her first ever No. 1 on Billboard‘s Hot 100.

Her new breakup anthem “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” sold 623,000 downloads in its first week — the largest frame ever by a female artist. The song was purchased more times than Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok,” which scored 610,000 downloads during January 2010′s lucrative post-holiday iTunes gift-card frenzy, and it notched way higher sales than Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way,” which, with 448,000 downloads in its first week, held the record for best single-week debut sales frame by a female.

Only one song was ever purchased more times in seven days than “Never”: Flo Rida’s “Right Round,” which sold 636,000 units in its first week. Coincidentally, Swift’s new single pushes Flo Rida’s current smash “Whistle” out of the top spot and down to No. 2.

Swift, who has always enjoyed both pop and country radio relevance (Billboard notes that her No. 13 launch on the Country Songs chart is the highest debut by a woman in the 22 years that Soundscan has collected data), formerly reached No. 2 on the Hot 100 with “You Belong with Me” and “Today was a Fairytale.” Speak Now‘s lead single “Mine” reached No. 3, while the ubiquitous Cinderella tale “Love Story” peaked at No. 4.

Taylor Swift’s new single “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” may just sell the most downloads ever! ever! ever! in its first week.

Released on Monday night, the song is reportedly heading to first-week downloads in the 600,000 range, which would make the breakup anthem the fastest selling song ever by a female artist. (Lady Gaga currently holds that record with “Born This Way,” which was downloaded 448,000 times in its first frame.)

There’s one song Taylor probably will probably not outsell, though: “Right Round” by Flo Rida feat. Ke$ha, which sold 636,000 songs in a single week in 2009. Still, if she climbs past Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend,” which moved 521,000 editions in its first week, she’ll have the second-best sales week in digital history. Not too shabby.

Rick Ross: The large and in charge rapper’s fifth album God Forgives, I Don’t became his fourth number one album, selling 219,000 copies in its first week. The sales total was the largest rap debut since Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded bowed with 253,000 copies earlier this year.

Carly Rae Jepsen: “Call Me Maybe,” which this week passed the 5 million mark in sales, logged a ninth week atop Billboard’s Hot 100. The track, the first off her just-announced Kiss (due Sept. 18), is now the longest-running number one single in 2012 over Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know,” which held the peak position for eight weeks and is still sitting pretty at No. 6. Katy Perry scores ninth number one on Top 40, ties Rihanna for record

Trying to prove which pop star is the best in 2012 usually brings out the worst in the Internet. For proof, see every YouTube comment thread ever.

But if you’re judging by sheer quantity of radio number ones, the case is closed — and Katy Perry and Rihanna come out on top.

Perry earned her ninth number one single on the Billboard Top 40 chart this week with “Wide Awake,” the final chapter from the unfettered pop onslaught that is Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection.

Perry’s sophomore album already made some chart history back when “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart last summer, making Perry is the only other artist besides Michael Jackson to have churned out five number ones from a single album.

“Wide Awake” puts Perry in the same company as Miss Where-Have-You-Been Rihanna, who also ties the record with nine number ones. That means both now beat out Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, and P!nk, who have each had seven number ones on the Top 40 chart, and Beyoncé and Mariah Carey, who have both logged six. Who would have thought that the slightly awkward teenager who once starred in a Destiny’s Child tribute performance would go on to earn more number ones than Bey herself?

Also noteworthy: Perry did this in only two albums, while Rihanna reached her mark over the course of six. Make of that what you will, ravenous Internet fan club enthusiasts, but it looks like there’s no exact formula for being a pop juggernaut these days. Case in point: Rihanna received five MTV Video Music Award nominations Tuesday, with Perry following close behind with four. Both are up for the top prize, Video of the Year, for “We Found Love” and for “Wide Awake.”

In other chart dominance news, “Wide Awake” is also Perry’s 10th number one on the Billboard Dance/Club Play chart. A few years ago, claiming success there would have been the big-fish-small-pond equivalent of claiming you were the greatest Candyland player in all of Iceland.

But now that electronic beats, dubsteb breakdowns, and a general appreciation for bleeps and boops are the norm in popular music, this other Perry accomplishment is probably nothing to sneeze at.

Phillip Phillips' 'Home' hits No. 1 on iTunes chart following Olympic placement

AUGUST 1, UPDATE: Phillip Phillips has won a gold medal of his own! On the third night of gymnastics coverage, the women’s all-around team competition, “Home” continued to gain momentum and has now officially reached the No. 1 spot. “Just saw where “Home”is on the iTunes chart!” Phillips tweeted. “Thank you everyone who has bought it &supporting me.”

JULY 31, UPDATE: Following another placement last night, “Home” has climbed up to No. 3 on the iTunes chart.

JULY 30, ORIGINALLY: American Idol winner Phillip Phillips got a big boost from NBC’s Sunday night broadcast of the London Olympics.

His coronation song “Home” was used to introduce the women’s gymnastic portion of the program, which drew over 40 million viewers, and it played three times throughout the night during pre-taped segments with the ladies of Team USA.

“Home,” which was sitting in the 80-something range of iTunes’ chart rankings, has now climbed all the way back up to No. 6. The huge bump hearkens back to the song’s first week available to the public, when it sold 278,000 copies.

Now, the track, which was recently certified gold for sales exceeding 500,000 copies, looks like it may enjoy a second life.

Phillips, who underwent intensive kidney surgery in June, is currently on the road for the American Idols Live! tour, during which he is recording his debut album, due out this fall.

Album Sales: Frank Ocean sells 131,000 copies of 'Channel Orange,' but Zac Brown Band tops chart

Following Frank Ocean’s very personal admission on his Tumblr and a high-profile performance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last week, Def Jam released his major-label debut Channel Orange a week early on July 10 as an iTunes exclusive.

While that move may have angered Target, which is protesting the early digital release by not carrying the physical album (discs officially hit retailers yesterday), Ocean probably isn’t too worried about it. Channel Orange sold an impressive 131,000 copies (3,000 of which were actually CDs) in its first week. As Billboard notes, his sales are  in line with recent R&B/hip-hop debuts from Usher (Looking 4 Myself, 128,000) and Chris Brown (Fortune, 135,000).

Some of the initial interest undoubtedly comes from Ocean’s  recent revelation that his first love was a man, but reviews — including EW’s — have largely been enthusiastic, and have little to do with his expressed sexuality.

Still, Channel was no sales match for Georgia’s Zac Brown Band, whose third studio album Uncaged topped the Billboard 200 with 234,000 copies. READ FULL STORY

'Fifty Shades of Grey' mention spikes sales of 16th-century classical composer

In addition to single-handedly carrying the publishing world on its candle-wax-scorched back, Fifty Shades of Grey has gone ahead and boosted the music business as well.

According to The Guardian, the mention of a Thomas Tallis choral work called “Spem In Alium” amidst the pages of the finest S&M masterwork since that last thing you read on the Internet has rocketed the piece up the British classical music charts (rocketed being of course a relative term).

The 40-voice epic, composed around 1570 and recorded in 1985, has elbowed chart heavyweight Luciano Pavarotti from the top perch. Go ahead and sample it below.
