NFL asks Rihanna, others to pay to play the Super Bowl

The Super Bowl halftime show is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, audiences an artist will ever get. That’s probably why performers agree to do the show for free year after year. But what happens if artists are asked to pay for the privilege of performing at the big game?

According to the Wall Street Journal, the NFL is considering three candidates to provide entertainment at the 2015 Super Bowl: Katy Perry, Coldplay, and Rihanna. And when reaching out to these artists, the NFL reportedly asked if any of the acts “would be willing to contribute a portion of their post-Super Bowl tour income to the league, or if they would make some other type of financial contribution, in exchange for the halftime gig.” Apparently, the stars’ representative did not take kindly to the idea.

As of now, no lineup has been set for the Super Bowl XLIX halftime show, which will air on Feb. 1, 2015.

Hey there, busking millionaire! Chris Martin, playing the guy you really hope doesn’t get on your subway car, surprises the citizens of Sydney, Australia, with a wandering one-man-band act in the new clip for Coldplay’s “A Sky Full of Stars.”

Oh but hark, here are the rest of the ‘Players, joining him for a semi-spontaneous (the band put a callout to fans on Twitter) street parade that ends in a crowning town-square glory of confetti and  singalongs and a thousand camera-phone snaps.

Mariah Carey stumbles on album chart, Coldplay reign for second week

I-Am-Mariah.jpg

Apparently no amount of riding the subway in a sparkly ball gown could overcome the lack of heat on Mariah Carey’s latest album Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse.

Carey’s 14th studio album only managed to shift 56,000 copies in its opening week on the Billboard 200, placing her third behind country star Brantley Gilbert’s Just As I Am and Coldplay’s Ghost Stories, which spent a second week in the top spot with 85,000 copies sold. READ FULL STORY

Coldplay drops old-timey video for new single 'Magic' with special guest star -- watch it here

Watch out, David Blaine: There’s a new magician in town, and his name is Chris Martin.

In Coldplay’s new silent-film-style video for “Magic,” the first single from their upcoming album Ghost Stories, Martin plays both a douchey illusionist in a traveling circus and the illusionist’s assistant, who has a crush on his boss’ wife. But it’s not just all Martins; actress Ziyi Zhang of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon fame plays the clip’s leading lady.

Coldplay unveils new songs at SXSW: See clip here

coldplay-01.jpg

Coldplay parachuted into the South by Southwest music festival Tuesday night with a 50-minute performance that mixed familiar hits with new songs from their upcoming sixth album, Ghost Stories.

The hot-ticket show at the intimate 2,700-seat Moody Theater at ACL Live kicked off the inaugural U.S. iTunes Festival, which runs over five nights during the fest. After sets by openers London Grammar and Imagine Dragons, frontman Chris Martin and co. took the stage looking trim and fit in a nondescript knit shirts.

“We’ve been away a long time, and I can’t think of a better place to come back into the world,” Martin told the crowd before launching into band standards including “Paradise,” “Viva La Vida,”Fix You,” “Clocks” and “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall” (that last adding a confetti cannon that left Martin wrapped up like a mummy). The new slower-paced new songs “Another’s Arms,” “Always In My Head” and “Magic” suggested Ghost Stories might be a more subdued entry into the band’s discography. Martin also took a moment to send “good vibes” to “everyone involved in the Malaysian [missing plane] situation.”

Performance wise, the group seemed pretty much note-perfect (and when Martin messed up the intro to one song, he called himself out on it) and the high-tech presentation left one fan screaming: “This needs more lasers!” It was snark, but happy snark.

SXSW Music 2014: 20 acts to see

Angel-Olsen.jpg

The annual South By Southwest festival/conference/conventio-con is underway, with the music getting started in earnest on Tuesday and rolling headlong through Saturday night.

This year’s event has its share of big name visitors: Lady Gaga will be delivering the keynote address and performing, and the likes of Coldplay, Kendrick Lamar, Soundgarden, and Pitbull will be headlining a series of shows as part of the iTunes Festival.

But SXSW was originally designed as a showcase for new music, a place where baby bands could get their first big taste of exposure and where those artists who were about to break finally actually broke. EW will be on the ground covering acts both big and small, including these 20 on-the-cusp artists we’re going out of our way to check out.

Temples: Throwback psychedelia is hard to do, but this British quartet blends just the right amount of crushing beauty and off-kilter left turns.

Angel Olsen: In the grand tradition of PJ Harvey, Olsen marries muscular guitar with her delicate warble for blow-away blasts of folk-rock and power blues.

Perfect Pussy: Despite their censor-baiting name (and what honestly seems like a pretty standard-issue fuzz-punk sound), there’s a lot of buzz on this Syracuse foursome.

Sleepy Kitty: For fans of Sleigh Bells — but sub in post-grunge jangle for noisecore.

Cloud Nothings: Noisy Cleveland-based anarchists nearly made it big with their exceptional 2012 album Attack on Memory. Could the bigger, badder, forthcoming Here and Nowhere Else put them over the top?

Vertical Scratchers: Ultra-fuzzy indie jangle care of a pair of blissed out Californians.

SKATERS: Four New Yorkers who split the difference between driving punk surges and carefully-curated sonic tapestries, all wrapped in a whatever-man sneer.

ScHoolboy Q: Sure, he topped the charts with his latest album OxyMoron, but the top lieutenant in Kendrick Lamar’s army is ready to take the next step into household name-ness.

Chet Faker: The Australian’s downtempo bedroom R&B that would swerve dangerously into the cheese lane were it not for bearded mastermind Nick Murphy’s convincingly syrupy baritone.

You Blew It!: Don’t look now, but an emo revival is about to kick into gear, and this Orlando-based combo are the finest purveyors of the new pollution.

Oh Honey: Nothing but positive jams for this strummy, soulful Brooklyn duo. Like Matt & Kim with better production values.

Coldplay release another new song, announce album release date and preorder

After last week’s surprise single “Midnight” dropped, Coldplay has officially announced that their new album, Ghost Stories, will be released May 19th. The band also revealed another new single, “Magic.” (Is Coldplay cashing in on the YA fantasy frenzy again?)

Coldplay drop surprise 'Midnight' single and video: Watch it here!

Let’s get this out of the way first: When a big artist comes up with a surprise release seemingly out of nowhere, can we agree not to call it “Pulling a Beyoncé”? That sounds alternately dirty and painful.

From here on out, whenever a group like Coldplay drops a brand new single and music video on our doorstep—as they did today with the release of “Midnight”—let’s just call it a “Stealth Drop” or a “Surprise Party” or “Throwing the Old Barkley.” Anything but the creepy “Pulling a Beyoncé.”

Anyway, “Midnight” is a very moody piece of business that relies a lot on keyboard hums and electronic squiggles. It takes a few listens to set in, but one thing that really stands out is the vocal performance of Chris Martin, who has been gradually honing his instrument into quite a soulful thing (though it’s ironic that there’s also a ton of vocal effects on “Midnight”).

The video, directed by Mary Wigmore (who also directed the band’s clip for “The Hardest Part” and helmed the excellent documentary Birth Story: Ina May Gaskin and the Farm Midwives), matches the mood of the tune, with a lot of negative space and some ominous wolves. Enjoy its subtle spookiness below.  READ FULL STORY

SXSW 2014: Coldplay, Imagine Dragons, Pitbull, more to play Austin's first iTunes Festival

Apple is looking for its own bite out of SXSW. The company just announced the first-ever iTunes Festival in Austin, Texas, running for five nights during the city’s South by Southwest music, film, and interactive conference.

The first announced performers are Coldplay, Imagine Dragons, Pitbull, Keith Urban, and Zedd, who will take the stage March 11-15 at ACL Live at the Moody Theatre, where Austin City Limits is also held.

Not heading to Austin? You can stream all five nights of music through the iTunes Store.

While this is the first iTunes Festival in the U.S., a U.K. fest of the same name has been held annually at London’s Roundhouse theater since 2007, this past fall boasting headliners like Justin Timberlake and Lady Gaga. More performers and concert details for the Austin incarnation will be announced over the next few weeks.
