Mumford & Sons, Sande highlight Brit Awards winners

British music put on a brash, confident show at the Brit Awards on Wednesday, celebrating a resurgent industry whose bands and artists are topping charts around the globe.

Winners ranged from established acts such as Coldplay and Adele to world-conquering boy band One Direction, who won in the new Global Success category.

One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson called the prize “absolutely mind-blowing.”

American artists Frank Ocean and Lana Del Rey were among the non-British winners at a ceremony that embraced the mainstream while rewarding artists with distinctive personalities. READ FULL STORY »

Madonna had the top-grossing tour of 2012

Call it the Super Bowl bump?

Billboard has announced the list of the 2012′s top-grossing tours, and it looks like Madonna is at the top. Her Madgesty sold out all 72 of the shows she played this year, grossing a grand total of $228,406,085 over the year. Interestingly, her new album  MDNA only landed at No. 44 on the year-end Billboard 200 chart, moving 521,000 units in the U.S. as of December.

After Madonna on the top-grossing tours list is Bruce Springsteen, whose raked in just shy $200 million this year with his Wrecking Ball tour. (He did, however, beat Madonna in overall attendance by about 500,000 people. Like Madonna, he also played 72 shows.) Roger Waters came in third with roughly $186 million (and nearly 50,000 more in attendance than Madge). Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour by Cirque Du Soleil came in fourth place with about $147 million for the year, which just edged No. 5 Coldplay by roughly $100,000.

Chris Martin, Eric Clapton added to Hurricane Sandy benefit in NYC

And the lineup for the big 12-12-12 benefit for Hurricane Sandy keeps getting bigger and better.

British rock heavyweights Eric Clapton and Chris Martin have been added to the increasing roster of musicians lined up to play Madison Square Garden. As we reported last week, Eddie Vedder, Dave Grohl, and the entire Bon Jovi band were the most recent additions.

Also slated to perform at the benefit are Paul McCartney, Kanye West, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Alicia Keys, Billy Joel, the Who, and Roger Waters. Proceeds from the concert will go toward Hurricane Sandy relief via the Robin Hood Relief Fund. Tickets are on sale now.

Coldplay hints at hiatus

Is Chris Martin pulling a Dave Grohl?

During a recent Coldplay show in Australia, Martin dropped numerous hints that his band might be taking some kind of hiatus.

“This is the last big show for three years or so,” the singer told the crowd last Wednesday, Billboard reports. ”I don’t want to stop.” That, coupled with an earlier comment assuring the audience “that we’re going to play for you the best f—ing show in our life,” have people wondering if there might be a short break in order for the “Fix You” band.

Of course, none of that means the band will be leaving us completely. For one, we know for sure that drummer Will Champion will enter our televisions next year via HBO’s Game of Thrones. Moreover, the hints dropped throughout the show indicate a hiatus from playing live — leaving open the possibility that the band could spend some of the next few years writing and recording their next album. And, probably, getting some sleep.

Rolling Stones expands anniversary tour, add Brooklyn date

Are the Rolling Stones going artisanal?

After watching tickets to their four-date 50th anniversary tour sell like hotcakes, the Stones have announced that they’ll be playing an additional fifth show for fans — in Brooklyn.

According the band’s site, Mick and the boys will be playing the borough’s new Barclays Center on Dec. 8, the Saturday before their two dates at the Prudential Center in New Jersey. (The first two concerts of the band’s victory lap will take place at London’s O2 Arena.) Presale tickets for the Brooklyn show begin tomorrow at 10 a.m. EST, while general tickets will be up for grabs starting the morning of Monday, Nov. 19.

And they’re not the only Brits invading Brooklyn that month: Coldplay recently announced that they, along with Jay-Z, will be playing Barclays Center on New Year’s Eve.

Check out Coldplay's 'God Put a Smile Upon Your Face' from 'Live 2012' - EXCLUSIVE

Coldplay are known for turning it out at their live shows — Chris Martin’s signature dance style even has its own Urban Dictionary entry — and now fans can experience it all in widescreen, thanks to the upcoming concert doc Live 2012.

The movie, filmed over a handful of cities around the world during the band’s tour for 2011 album Mylo Xyloto, finds the group hitting the highlights of their vast catalog, including on smashes both old (“Clocks,” “Yellow,” “Fix You”) and new (most notably “Princess of China,” which features a guest appearance by Rihanna).

Coldplay’s Live 2012 premieres on cable network Epix on November 17, with the CD/DVD/Blu-Ray release following a few days later.

But you can get a first look at the film below with the exclusive unveiling of Coldplay knocking out a particularly rocked-up version of “God Put a Smile Upon Your Face,” from 2002′s A Rush of Blood to the Head:

Coldplay's 'Hurts Like Heaven' video brings their comic to life -- VIDEO

The music video for Coldplay’s “Hurts Like Heaven” is a prequel to their planned six-part comic-book series, which shares the title of their album Mylo Xyloto, and plays out as the book’s pages are turned. The video depicts a social uprising: A group of superheroes challenges the leader Major Minus and flees from the militaristic police. They’re ultimately caught, but a glimmer of hope survives.

Although I prefer my Coldplay videos with elephants instead of superheroes, the clip’s Orwellian themes and underlying message about the importance of creativity and self-expression make it a win in my book. Even if you had never heard about their comic book, which will be published monthly beginning in February, the video complements the song’s up-beat music and lyrics perfectly, especially the colorful love story.

Carrie Underwood covers Coldplay's 'Fix You' on VH1's 'Unplugged': Watch it here -- EXCLUSIVE

Coldplay’s 2005 single “Fix You” has a rich history of television appearances, but Carrie Underwood is ready to give the song a new twist.

For her upcoming VH1 Unplugged special (airing 4 p.m. on VH1′s site next Tuesday and then at 7 p.m. on the network itself), the planet’s fourth American Idol winner offered her own country-fried rendition of the durable Chris Martin tune, which you can watch right now exclusively here.

Other than the Coldplay cover, Underwood’s intimate five-song Unplugged set will also include her own chart monsters “Before He Cheats” and “Good Girl” as well as fan favorites “Blown Away” and “Do You Think About Me.”

“It was a unique way to play a few of the songs,” says the five-time Grammy winner. “And I loved being able to mix things up and perform them in a different way.”

Rihanna, Coldplay, and Jay-Z come together for Paralympics closing ceremony -- VIDEO

Millions tuned in to the Paralympics Closing Ceremony in London last night, and today, three performers from the hours-long finale still have people buzzing.

Jay-Z, Rihanna, and Coldplay all took the stage during the event and filled the stadium with colorful pageantry, stadium-pleasing songs, and tons of pats on each other’s backs. The three artists are all friends as well as collaborators, of course, so there was a lot of plenty of shared love: Chris Martin’s crew backed RiRi for “We Found Love,” Hova helped infuse Coldplay’s “Paradise” with swag, and the whole cadre came together for Jay’s ”Run This Town.”

Chris Martin and Rihanna ninja up for 'Princess of China' video: Watch it here

Notice how we said Chris Martin and not Coldplay? That’s because none of the other band members appear in the latest clip for the Mylo Xyloto single. But, hey, at least someone besides Rihanna showed up this time!

Other things that appear: Rihanna’s arms, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon-y (or at least Kung Fu Panda-y) moves, and a near-miss of a make-out session.
