Mick Jagger, Dave Stewart, Joss Stone, Damian Marley team up for SuperHeavy: Hear their single here

Supergroups, unite and take over! Next week sees the release of Kanye and Jay-Z’s Watch the Throne, and now there’s the first single from SuperHeavy, the band that features Mick Jagger, Dave Stewart, Joss Stone, Damian Marley, and Indian film composer A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire).

A breezy reggae groove that features an Bollywood-inspired string section (!), “Miracle Worker” begins with Marley “reachin’ out to all the lovers who might be thinkin’ about breakin’ up… or maybe makin’ up.” (Listen to it here.) From there, Stone and Jagger trade verses for the strangest dream team since members of Hanson, Smashing Pumpkins, and Cheap Trick got together for Tinted Windows.

So how did this group come together? During a press conference at Henson Studios in Los Angeles on June 30, Jagger and Stewart explained that the concept behind the group’s forthcoming self-titled album was to see what would happen if musicians from different cultures composed and recorded together, and indeed, the songs reportedly borrow from each band member’s specialty: reggae (Marley), blues-rock (Jagger), soul (Stone) and even Indian film music (Rachman). “I love musicians from all over the world, but never liked the term ‘world music,'” Stewart said. “That sounds like people knitting with yogurt.”

Stewart told reporters that the group recorded 29 songs in 10 days, which meant it all happened so quickly that Marley didn’t have time to school himself on his bandmates’ back catalog. “I wasn’t really familiar with everyone else’s music before,” he said, “but you observe how they work. It was a great experience.”

Stone has said that SuperHeavy will wait to see the reaction to the album, which is due to be released September 20, before they decide whether they’ll tour together. But we can’t wait til then: tell us in the comments what you think of the song.

Bruno Mars tries to drink (and maybe smoke) the pain away in 'Liquor Store Blues' video: Watch it here

I’m not sure what Bruno Mars is so down and out about in the clip for his latest single,”Liquor Store Blues.” (Maybe it’s because his girl cheated on him in the “Grenade” video?)

In any case, the pop crooner is ready to drown his sorrows in a tall glass of alcohol in his new “Blues” clip. Alongside reggae man Damien Marley, Mars aims to “get messed up today” in hopes that he’ll “be okay tomorrow.” Oddly enough, the video plays more like a hazy marijuana ad than one for getting tipsy, with Marley rapping about being “high as Superman” and shouting out pineapple kush as they spend the entire four minutes in a smoked out-psychedelic room.

Find out what concoction Mars and Marley are whipping up after the jump.

Nas and Damian Marley are SXSW's first surprise

nasImage Credit: Whitney Pastorek/EW.comRumors fly faster than pedicabs on the streets of Austin during South by Southwest, and the first one was a doozy: the Black Eyed Peas were doing a surprise set at the Levi’s/Fader Fort at sundown! No, wait — it’s Justin Timberlake! Hold on — my pedicab driver just told me it’s Radiohead! Run!

After booking it under I-35 to the sprawling Levi’s/Fader complex — an outpost of swag and corrugated metal where one can (and many people do) stay and play all day long, enjoying sets from bands, DJs, and what looked to be a nearly endless supply of Budweiser — I discovered our mystery guest was Nas, with new bestie Damian Marley, in town supporting Distant Relatives, their album-length collaboration (tentatively scheduled for a May 18 release, though it was also scheduled to come out last year). They’ve got great chemistry — Marley’s able to trill his classic reggae voice at the exact same speed Nas raps — and as they weave together hip-hop and the Marley family legacy (samples of “One Love” and “Exodus”), it’s more compelling than it reads on paper. “Made You Look” (with much crowd participation on the “Brave hearts!” chorus) bled into Marley’s “Welcome to Jamrock” (“Out in the streets, they call it murrrrrrder!” the crowd called out). The backing band’s female dancers and joyous conga player bounced energy back to the fired-up fans. “This feels like a family reunion out here, Austin, Texas!” crowed Nas.

The short set wrapped up with two blazing collabos: New track “Strong Will Continue,” a passionate exhortation in which Marley asks, “Do ya have it in ya?”; and a lighter-and-cell-phone-fueled rip through “Road to Zion,” the song that sparked their partnership back in 2005. They killed both — but it wasn’t enough for the L/FF kids, who booed heartily when the lights came on and security kicked them out. Still, it was only 8pm on St. Patty’s Day in Austin on the first night of SXSW. There’s a lot of party left, rock kiddos. Don’t you fret.

Nas and Damian Marley on their 'Distant Relatives' collaboration

Damianmarleynas_lNas and Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley recorded one excellent single together, "Road to Zion," in 2005. As much as I enjoyed hearing the N.Y. rap legend and the reggae scion play off each other’s styles on that track, though, I never guessed that they would be following it up four years later with a full collaborative album, Distant Relatives, tentatively set for release this June. Turns out, neither did they.

"I didn’t really plan this," Nas told me when I reached him by phone recently. "It just feels right." In a separate conversation, Marley explained that the idea for Distant Relatives originated last year with his management: "The idea was for us to do an EP based on Africa, using one or two tracks that didn’t make my album, likewise one or two tracks that didn’t make his album. Once we started working on the music, though, everyone was so excited that we decided to make this a full-out album."
