Lady Gaga: Now hawking headphones!

Today at a press conference in New York City, Lady Gaga and Dr. Dre revealed the details of their new collaborative effort — not to create a glammed-up G-funk hit, but to market a line of high-end Monster Cable ear-bud headphones called Heartbeats.

The Lady’s headphones use the technology of Beats by Dr. Dre, which claim to be the only headphones that actually convey what music sounds like in the studio. The fashion sense, on the other hand, is all Gaga—hers are triangular and sort of look like little pyramids sticking out of one’s ears. Ms. Gaga explained the personal reasons behind the design: “The triangle for me represents three things. I say sometimes I would die if I were forbidden to write, forbidden to love, or forbidden to fashion.”

Gaga (pictured above with Dre and Interscope head Jimmy Iovine) kept her poker face throughout the conference, hiding behind a pair of sunglasses that wouldn’t look out of place on Dame Edna, but did give knowing smiles each time she said anything particularly PR-ish. When she spoke of working on demos for the re-release of her debut (re-dubbed The Fashion Monster), she said, “I’ve been unable to listen to them [outside the studio] unless I was using our headphones,” and flashed a cheeky grin afterward, as if to acknowledge she was dropping some scripted talking points.

Dr. Dre teases 'Detox' track in a Dr. Pepper ad: Watch it here

Dr. Dre is one of the greatest music producers of all time. Dr. Pepper is a thoroughly tasty beverage. So why am I not more excited about the new Dr. Pepper ad that’s about to start airing next week, in which Dr. Dre plays part of a new song from his infinitely-delayed magnum opus, Detox? I guess it’s because we already heard this particular Detox track months ago, when a demo version leaked under the name "S— Popped Off."

Dope beat, don’t get me wrong, but at this point — after years of hints and whispers and snippets and rough leaks — it’ll take a little more than that to get this Dre fan’s interest. (Especially when we just got an entire album full of Dre beats that are actually new.)

But don’t mind jaded old me. If this ad means that Detox is really coming this year, that’s something worth toasting with a glass of your favorite fizzy substance. So, here you go: Ten seconds of a sorta-new Detox track, preceded by 20 more seconds of Dr. Dre selling soft drinks. Thirsty yet?

Eminem's 'Relapse' cover art: What do you think?

Eminem_relapse_lWe’re getting closer and closer to Eminem’s big May 19 Relapse, and the sneak peeks keep on coming. Today the album’s cover art was revealed to the world over at Nah Right. As you can see, it’s a composite image of Marshall Mathers’ face made out of various pills, featuring an Rx label that reads "Prescribed by Dr. Dre." (Glad to hear that he’s still covered by Mr. Mathers’ health plan!) I’d be remiss not to note the eerie resemblance between this visual and the Eminem-in-M&M’s objet d’art that Ripley’s Believe it or Not! purchased last fall. Coincidence? You decide. Anyway, how do you like the Relapse cover art?

Eminem's 'We Made You' video: Snap judgment

The video for Eminem’s official comeback single, "We Made You," debuted today, featuring all the crass pop-culture parodies you’d expect from an Eminem video. And I mean all. It’s like Em took every single unused video treatment that came across his desk in the past five years and put it into this clip. (Click through to the jump to watch the whole thing.) Bret Michaels hooking up with Sarah Palin! Mr. Spock in Psycho! Elvis getting electrocuted! Kim Kardashian’s posterior! Amy Winehouse behind bars! Eminem as Jason Mraz? Those are a mere fraction of the wacky scenarios that Em and various lookalike models act out here. Also, much of the video appears to take place in the middle of an ongoing Rock Band game for some reason.

That’s a lot of tasteless zaniness for one video. Which is fine in principle: Tasteless zaniness is one of Eminem’s strong suits, and if you’re not on board with that by now, you’re probably not interested in watching an Eminem video in the first place. But somehow I feel like he’s trying too hard this time. Maybe it’s the pot shots he takes at Samantha Ronson, Lindsay Lohan, Ellen Degeneres, and Portia de Rossi — not only are these gags homophobic, they’re random and unfunny. I get that Eminem has a lot to prove with this album. I can even understand why he might feel like he needs to shock people into paying attention to him. For now, though, I hope the quality/quantity ratio of the jokes in his next video is a little higher. How about you?

Eminem, Dr. Dre, and 50 Cent: A sneak peek at their mysterious new video

Eminem50centdrdre_lHere’s what Interscope is willing to tell us about the snapshot they just released of a dapper-looking Eminem, Dr. Dre, and 50 Cent playing high-stakes cards. It was taken at Las Vegas’ Palms Casino, where the trio was shooting a video for the first single off of Em’s long-awaited Relapse album. That single is not "Crack a Bottle." The video will likely be out in early April, a month or so before Relapse‘s May 19 release. And…that’s about it. The label is keeping mum otherwise. But you know what they say about pictures, a thousand words, and all that, right? Just seeing those three back in action is enough to intrigue me. How about you?

UPDATE: Interscope allowed us another morsel of information about this video on Tuesday: The Eminem single is called "We Made You."
